Oceanhorn was first released at the end of 2013, the game has had identical releases on Android, Xbox One, PS4, PS Vita PC and Mac OS, and now, it finally has finally launched on Nintendo Switch.
Oceanhorn: Monster of the Deep takes a lot of influence from the Legend of Zelda Windwaker
In fact, it takes quite a bit, there is absolutely no way you can look at this game and not see it as a near exact clone of the classic game. I am going to be honest, that similarity is what attracted me to playing Oceanhorn.
The game takes place on a series of islands, which you must travel to find your father, and The hero must gather three magical objects spread across the islands to defeat Oceanhorn and restore the world.
Each island combines puzzles, combat and exploration from an isometric perspective which is a little bit different than zelda games, but gives the game a pretty retro 16 bit era RPG vibe, that actually goes well with the game.
Just like in Zelda, You can pick up and throw things, use your shield and sword (once you have them), and eventually you'll gain other abilities like bomb-throwing and spell-casting
Enemies and challenges give experience, and each level-up unlocks bonuses and abilities, which is probably the main thing that makes the basic combat just a bit different than a zelda game.
Other than that, the enemy A.I. and variety is nothing to go home tooting about. You will see the same bats, rats, goblins, almost everywhere you go.
However, as far as puzzles go, there is nothing to extremely detailed or even challenging. The majority of puzzle solving has you push boulders or statues around.
Back to the sailing element, even though it is a nod to wind waker, you can’t control the sailing, but it is instead a linear path from island to island. You select where you want to go on the map, and your character automatically goes there. Later on you get a weapon to attack enemies while you sail, but that is about that. Luckily it doesn’t take long to go from island to island.
It’s not well-defined or polished like a Zelda game. If you are looking for a long and memorable journey, this will not be anything new to you. It is pretty much as good as a Zelda clone can get, and unfortunately I feel that is the biggest short coming of Ocean Horn. Don’t go into this game expecting quality like the Zelda series, but instead with a short adventure that feels a lot like a Zelda game.
I personally wish they would have tried to build up on the formula, but you couldn’t expect much from a title that originally was an iOS game. With that said it is not a bad game, it is one of the better ports, (especially mobile Ports) that is currently available on all consoles, not just the Switch.
If you've already played Oceanhorn though, there isn't any reason to pick this up. Especially since it is actually cheaper on other platforms such as Steam. But if this is your first time and you are looking for decent games to pass the time between big releases, this is a decent little title that ain’t half bad.
