The chimes of Big Ben

01:45
(There is no dialogue in this video) This is the bell in Parliament's Clock Tower (Big Ben). The bell at the centre of this film is called Big Ben. There are two possible explanations for the bell's name: - It could have been named after Sir Benjamin Hall, the First Commissioner of Works, who was a tall man and known in the House of Commons as Big Ben. - It may have been named after a champion heavyweight boxer of the time called Ben Caunt. He fought his last fight in 1857 when it was being decided what to call the bell. Visit http://www.parliament.uk/bigben for more information about Big Ben.

London Facts You Didn't Know ► This Is Not Big Ben

02:31
London, England’s capital, is a 21st-century city with history stretching back to Roman times. It was the first city in the world to reach a population of more than one million, in 1811. London remained the largest city in the world until 1957, when its population was surpassed by Tokyo. From the iconic Tower of London to the Palace of Westminster, here are some of the most fascinating facts about London. Did you know that London buses were not always red? Before 1907, different routes had different-colored buses. One bus company, the London General Omnibus Company, painted their fleet of buses red in order to stand out from the competition. When London Transport was eventually formed as a single company in 1933, red was already the predominant color, so all buses in the Greater London area became red. The world’s first traffic light, a gas lantern that was manually turned by a traffic police officer, was built outside the House of Commons in 1868. Although it was said to be successful at controlling traffic, it blew up the following year, killing the policeman who was operating it. This is not Big Ben. The name Big Ben is technically the nickname for the Great Bell of the clock inside of the clock tower. The clock tower itself is called Elizabeth Tower. The name Big Ben is often used, by extension, to refer to the clock, the tower, and the bell collectively, but it is not universally accepted as referring to the clock and tower. Therefore, it would be most correct to refer to the tower as Elizabeth Tower. Royal navy ships entering the Port of London are still required by law to give a barrel of rum or wine to the Constable of the Tower of London if they wish to enter. This tradition dates all the way back to the 14th century. Today’s British accent first appeared among London’s upper class around the time of the American Revolution. Before that time, the British accent was similar to that of Americans. In the early 1950s, anyone could get ahold of Prime Minister Winston Churchill as his number was in the phone book. In 1891, London built a structure that was designed to surpass the Eiffel Tower in height. Unfortunately, the tower was unstable, so they abandoned the construction and demolished it in 1907. If you didn’t know these fascinating facts before, now u know.

Big Ben Clock Tower - London - England. Famous Landmarks.

03:46
Big Ben Clock Tower - London - England. Famous Landmarks. Big Ben is the nickname for the Great Bell of the clock at the north end of the Palace of Westminster in London, and often extended to refer to the clock and the clock tower. The tower is officially known as the Elizabeth Tower, renamed as such to celebrate the Diamond Jubilee of Elizabeth II (prior to being renamed in 2012 it was known as simply "Clock Tower"). The tower holds the second largest four-faced chiming clock in the world (Minneapolis City Hall being the first). The tower was completed in 1858 and had its 150th anniversary on 31 May 2009, during which celebratory events took place. The tower has become one of the most prominent symbols of the United Kingdom and is often in the establishing shot of films set in London. The Elizabeth Tower (previously called the Clock Tower), named in tribute to Queen Elizabeth II in her Diamond Jubilee year, more popularly known as Big Ben, was raised as a part of Charles Barry's design for a new palace, after the old Palace of Westminster was largely destroyed by fire on the night of 16 October 1834. The new Parliament was built in a Neo-gothic style. Although Barry was the chief architect of the Palace, he turned to Augustus Pugin for the design of the clock tower, which resembles earlier Pugin designs, including one for Scarisbrick Hall. The design for the tower was Pugin's last design before his final descent into madness and death, and Pugin himself wrote, at the time of Barry's last visit to him to collect the drawings: "I never worked so hard in my life for Mr Barry for tomorrow I render all the designs for finishing his bell tower & it is beautiful." The tower is designed in Pugin's celebrated Gothic Revival style, and is 315 feet (96.0 m) high. The main bell, officially known as the Great Bell, is the largest bell in the tower and part of the Great Clock of Westminster. The bell is better known by the nickname Big Ben. Along with the Great Bell, the belfry houses four quarter bells which play the Westminster Quarters on the quarter hours. In 2008 a survey of 2,000 people found that the tower was the most popular landmark in the United Kingdom. It has also been named as the most iconic film location in London. It's commonly known as Big Ben, but this famous landmark is actually named Elizabeth Tower in honor of Queen Elizabeth II. It's more than 150 years old, 300 feet high, and has four clock faces each 23 feet across. It's famously accurate, and it's kept that way by stacking and unstacking pennies on its pendulum! World's most famous clock - Big Ben - rings in its 150th anniversary - 2009

03:36
Defiantly low-tech yet accurate to the second, London's Big Ben - the most famous clock in the world - is having its 150th birthday on Sunday. The clock started ticking on 31 May 1859 - and the bell was struck for the first time six weeks later. 150 years on, Big Ben is the iconic symbol of London, and one of the world's best-known landmarks. Part of the Palace of Westminster, which houses the British parliament, Big Ben is a little less than most people imagine. The name is commonly used to describe the clock tower, including the clock face and the bell. But, technically, Big Ben refers just to the biggest of the bells inside the tower - the Great Bell - which weighs more than thirteen tons. How Big Ben became known by this name is open to question. Ian Westworth, who maintains Big Ben and the other clocks in the Palace of Westminster, says there are two theories. One is that it was named after a very large bare-knuckle fighter. The other is that it was named after an equally-large Palace official. Millions (m) of tourists have travelled to London to witness the distinctive chimes of Big Ben. Millions more have heard the bell on the BBC World Service, where for decades it was broadcast each hour. Westworth said there was a good reason why Big Ben made such a distinctive sound. "It has a crack in two places which gives it a slightly off pitch," he said. And that seems to be the secret of Big Ben's enduring popularity across the world. The Big Ben clock tower in London

00:52
The Big Ben clock tower in London is one of the most famous landmarks in the world. But exposure to pollution in the city has made the white clock faces dirty. Recently, the hands of Big Ben were stopped at 12. And the four faces of the clock, that are made up of 312 delicate pieces of glass, are being scrubbed off with soapy water. Now officially called Elizabeth Tower, it is known by the nickname Big Ben, which is in reference to the bell inside of the tower. Paul Robeson, chairman of the British Watch and Clock Makers’ Guild is quoted as saying: “The glass panels over the clock face are terribly thin and fragile, because originally the dials were lit by gas, which is very dim. This is why our window cleaners have to be extremely careful.” Clocksmiths are also taking a look at the inner workings and gears of Big Ben during the cleaning. Each face will take a full day to clean, and it will be a week before Big Ben is heard again in the city of London.

Clock tower which houses Big Ben is renamed to mark Queen Ellizabeth's jubilee

02:03
(12 Sep 2012) Big Ben is one of London's most famous landmarks. Only - it isn't. Big Ben IS the name of the huge bell which chimes the time every hour atop Britain's Houses of Parliament. Visitors and locals alike often call the tower itself Big Ben. But they are wrong. If you are not completely confused already - the tower actually had a name - the Clock Tower - only that has now been changed. Members of Parliament decided to mark Queen Elizabeth's 50 years on the British throne by naming this famous landmark after her. The Speaker of the House of Commons, John Bercow led the naming ceremony. "I hereby declare that the beloved Clock Tower - one of the best known sights not only in this country but around the world - is now officially renamed the Elizabeth Tower," he said So the proper name is now the Elizabeth Tower. Whether anyone actually calls it that is another matter. As Paul Flynn, anti-monarchist lawmaker said: "There's not one chance in ten-thousand that visitors, that people in this country, will think of this tower as anything but Big Ben." Visitors will continue to flock to one of London's most recognisable tourist destinations - whatever it's called. Places to see in ( London - UK ) Big Ben Big Ben is the nickname for the Great Bell of the clock at the north end of the Palace of Westminster in London and is usually extended to refer to both the clock and the clock tower as well. The tower is officially known as Elizabeth Tower, renamed to celebrate the Diamond Jubilee of Elizabeth II in 2012; previously, it was known simply as the Clock Tower. When completed in 1859, it was, says clockmaker Ian Westworth, “the prince of timekeepers: the biggest, most accurate four-faced striking and chiming clock in the world.” The tower had its 150th anniversary on 31 May 2009, during which celebratory events took place. A British cultural icon, the tower is one of the most prominent symbols of the United Kingdom and is often in the establishing shot of films set in London. The Elizabeth Tower (previously called the Clock Tower), more popularly known as Big Ben, was raised as a part of Charles Barry's design for a new palace, after the old Palace of Westminster was largely destroyed by fire on the night of 16 October 1834. The clock and dials were designed by Augustus Pugin. The clock dials are set in an iron frame 23 feet (7.0 m) in diameter, supporting 312 pieces of opal glass, rather like a stained-glass window. Some of the glass pieces may be removed for inspection of the hands. The surround of the dials is gilded. The clock's movement is famous for its reliability. The designers were the lawyer and amateur horologist Edmund Beckett Denison, and George Airy, the Astronomer Royal. Construction was entrusted to clockmaker Edward John Dent; after his death in 1853 his stepson Frederick Dent completed the work, in 1854. The main bell, officially known as the Great Bell but better known as Big Ben, is the largest bell in the tower and part of the Great Clock of Westminster. Along with the Great Bell, the belfry houses four quarter bells which play the Westminster Quarters on the quarter hours. The origin of the nickname Big Ben is the subject of some debate. The nickname was applied first to the Great Bell; it may have been named after Sir Benjamin Hall, who oversaw the installation of the Great Bell, or after boxing's English heavyweight champion Benjamin Caunt. The Elizabeth Tower and Great Bell have been scheduled for a major renovation which is expected to last three years and is due to begin in early 2017. Essential maintenance will be carried out on the clock mechanism, which will be stopped for several months during which there will be no chimes. Striking and tolling will however be maintained for important events. SOUNDBITE (English) Ian Westworth, Big Ben mechanic: "They wanted the clock tower and the clock to be the most impressive, a big icon in the centre of London. So this is why the palace is built with the clock tower at one end of it. It had the biggest dials of the day, 24 feet across, they were going to have the biggest bell of the day, at 13 and a half tons, the biggest clock, and it had to be the most accurate clock. So what they've done is they've actually made the clock to plus or minus one second a day. Back in the 1850s, 60s, a good clock was 2 or 3 minutes a day. And lots of people said it couldn't be done." 14. Various clock work 15. Close up electronic device 16. SOUNDBITE (English) Ian Westworth, Big Ben mechanic: "What makes it so accurate is that we have, for the day, a revolutionary escapement, which is called the double three-legged gravity escapement, a very grand title. And it's fantastic. It isolates the pendulum from all external forces apart from the impulses to keep it going. And because we've made it so accurate it keeps the clock so accurate. But we do have to make adjustments to it. We have to. Occasionally it does wander out of time and we're only allowed plus or minus one second. So what we do to keep it in time, we add or take off old pre-1972 pennies. We put one penny on and it speeds the clock up by two fifth of a second in 24 hours." 17. Various pennies lying on pendulum 18. SOUNDBITE (English) Ian Westworth, Big Ben mechanic: "It's wonderful. We get people who send them to us 'please have my penny, I've had it since 1972.' We actually had a group of people who came and visited, who gave us one of the last mintings, it had never been in circulation, in a little envelope present given to us, here you go. A little old lady sent us a whole envelope with them all sellotaped to a letter. Lovely." 19. Various close ups clockwork mechanics 20. Mid shot clockwork mechanics with upsound bells striking 21. SOUNDBITE (English) Ian Westworth, Big Ben mechanic: "Touch wood it stops very seldom. We have had a flock of starlings, long before I was here, actually landed on the hands and just the increase in weight stopped the clock, because obviously it can't compensate for everything. It has iced up before, but usually it is something very simple. There used to be a man in the palace who used to change all the lightbulbs. And we used to have a light bulb right above the middle of the clock. And one day he stretched across to change the light bulb, fell in, stopped the clock and made it strike the wrong time. It was State opening of Parliament so they had to get someone up here very quickly before the Queen came in, to actually make sure it struck the right time while she was here." 22. Big Ben and The Palace of Westminster - VIDEO PREVIEW (London, England)

A video of Big Ben and The Palace of Westminster! We decided to walk along the River Thames from West London for a few miles and take some photos and videos along the way! Big Ben is the nickname for the Great Bell of the clock at the north end of the Palace of Westminster in London and is usually extended to refer to both the clock and the clock tower as well. The Palace of Westminster is the meeting place of the House of Commons and the House of Lords, the two houses of the Parliament of the United Kingdom. Commonly known as the Houses of Parliament after its occupants, it is also known as the "heart of British politics". The Palace lies on the north bank of the River Thames in the City of Westminster, in central London. Its name, which is derived from the neighbouring Westminster Abbey, may refer to either of two structures: the Old Palace, a medieval building complex destroyed by fire in 1834, and its replacement, the New Palace that stands today. The palace is owned by the monarch in right of the Crown and for ceremonial purposes, retains its original status as a royal residence. The building is managed by committees appointed by both houses, which report to the Speaker of the House of Commons and the Lord Speaker. The first royal palace was built on the site in the 11th century, and Westminster was the primary residence of the Kings of England until fire destroyed much of the complex in 1512. After that, it served as the home of the Parliament of England, which had been meeting there since the 13th century, and also as the seat of the Royal Courts of Justice, based in and around Westminster Hall. In 1834, an even greater fire ravaged the heavily rebuilt Houses of Parliament, and the only significant medieval structures to survive were Westminster Hall, the Cloisters of St Stephen's, the Chapel of St Mary Undercroft, and the Jewel Tower. The subsequent competition for the reconstruction of the Palace was won by the architect Charles Barry, whose design was for new buildings in the Gothic Revival style, specifically inspired by the English Perpendicular Gothic style of the 14th–16th centuries. The remains of the Old Palace (with the exception of the detached Jewel Tower) were incorporated into its much larger replacement, which contains over 1,100 rooms organised symmetrically around two series of courtyards and has a floor area of 112,476 m2 (1,210,680 sq ft). Part of the New Palace's area of 3.24 hectares (8 acres) was reclaimed from the Thames, which is the setting of its nearly 300-metre long (980 ft) façade, called the River Front. Barry was assisted by Augustus Pugin, a leading authority on Gothic architecture and style, who designed the interior of the Palace. Construction started in 1840 and lasted for 30 years, suffering great delays and cost overruns, as well as the death of both leading architects; works for the interior decoration continued intermittently well into the 20th century. Major conservation work has been carried out since then to reverse the effects of London's air pollution, and extensive repairs took place after the Second World War, including the reconstruction of the Commons Chamber following its bombing in 1941. The Palace is one of the centres of political life in the United Kingdom; "Westminster" has become a metonym for the UK Parliament, and the Westminster system of government has taken its name after it. The Elizabeth Tower, in particular, which is often referred to by the name of its main bell, Big Ben, is an iconic landmark of London and the United Kingdom in general, one of the most popular tourist attractions in the city, and an emblem of parliamentary democracy. The Palace of Westminster has been a Grade I listed building since 1970 and part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1987. The design for the Big Ben London was Pugin's last design before his final descent into madness and death, and Pugin himself wrote, at the time of Barry's last visit to him to collect the drawings: "I never worked so hard in my life for Mr Barry for tomorrow I render all the designs for finishing his Big Ben London tower & it is beautiful."The tower is designed in Pugin's celebrated Gothic Revival style, and is 315 feet (96.0 m) high.Big Ben London. 🔴Subscribe for more 360 Videos https://goo.gl/N3txx7 🔴 Watch my recent upload https://goo.gl/DySRx2

Big Ben ⏰ Clock Tower ⏰ Big London attraction 🏰

03:26
The Houses of Parliament and Elizabeth Tower, commonly called Big Ben, are among London's most iconic landmarks and must-see London attractions. Technically, Big Ben is the name given to the massive bell inside the clock tower, which weighs more than 13 tons (13,760 kg). The clock tower looks spectacular at night when the four clock faces are illuminated. Big Ben Facts Each dial is seven metres in diameter The minute hands are 4.2 metres long (14ft) and weigh about 100kg (220lbs, including counterweights) The numbers are approximately 60cm (23in) long There are 312 pieces of glass in each clock dial A special light above the clock faces is illuminated when parliament is in session Big Ben's timekeeping is strictly regulated by a stack of coins placed on the huge pendulum. Big Ben has rarely stopped. Even after a bomb destroyed the Commons chamber during the Second World War, the clock tower survived and Big Ben continued to strike the hours. The chimes of Big Ben were first broadcast by the BBC on 31 December 1923, a tradition that continues to this day. The latin words under the clockface read DOMINE SALVAM FAC REGINAM NOSTRAM VICTORIAM PRIMAM, which means "O Lord, keep safe our Queen Victoria the First" In June 2012 the House of Commons announced that the clock tower was to be renamed the Elizabeth Tower in honor of Queen Elizabeth II's Diamond Jubilee. 🎤🎧 SUBSCRIBE TO MY YOUTUBE CHANNEL: 🎤🎧 The Fun & Travel is a channel where you can watch very nice fun-sexy, travel & other kind videos which we think is good for viewers. Big Ben - Chimes - EM1 Studio Record - 78 rpm

03:24
Here's a fascinating and rare recording of the chimes of the worlds most famous clock Big Ben from a rare 78 rpm record produced by EMI studios probably for internal use or by radio broadcasters. My guess is it was probably produced in the late 1950's. Big Ben is the nickname for the Great Bell of the clock at the north end of the Palace of Westminster in London[1] and is usually extended to refer to both the clock and the clock tower.[2][3] The tower in which Big Ben is located is officially called the Elizabeth Tower; originally just the Clock Tower, it was renamed in 2012 for the Diamond Jubilee of Elizabeth II. The tower was designed by Augustus Pugin in a neo-gothic style. When completed in 1859, it was, says horologist Ian Westworth, "the prince of timekeepers: the biggest, most accurate four-faced striking and chiming clock in the world".[4] It stands 315 feet (96 m) tall, and the climb from ground level to the belfry is 334 steps. Its base is square, measuring 39 feet (12 m) on each side. Dials of the clock are 23 feet (7.0 m) in diameter. On 31 May 2009, Along with the Great Bell, the belfry houses four quarter bells which play the Westminster Quarters on the quarter hours. The four quarter bells sound G♯, F♯, E, and B. They were cast by John Warner & Sons at their Crescent Foundry in 1857 (G♯, F♯ and B) and 1858 (E). The Foundry was in Jewin Crescent, in what is now known as The Barbican, in the City of London.[48] The bells are sounded by hammers pulled by cables coming from the link room—a low-ceiling space between the clock room and the belfry—where mechanisms translate the movement of the quarter train into the sounding of the individual bells.[49] The quarter bells play a once-repeating, 20-note sequence of rounds and four changes in the key of E major: 1–4 at quarter past, 5–12 at half past, 13–20 and 1–4 at quarter to, and 5–20 on the hour (which sounds 25 seconds before the main bell tolls the hour). Because the low bell (B) is struck twice in quick succession, there is not enough time to pull a hammer back, and it is supplied with two wrench hammers on opposite sides of the bell. The tune is that of the Cambridge Chimes, first used for the chimes of Great St Mary's church, Cambridge, and supposedly a variation, attributed to William Crotch, based on violin phrases from the air "I know that my Redeemer liveth" in Handel's Messiah.[50][51] The notional words of the chime, again derived from Great St Mary's and in turn an allusion to Psalm 37:23–24, are: "All through this hour/Lord be my guide/And by Thy power/No foot shall slide". They are written on a plaque on the wall of the clock room.[52][53] One of the requirements for the clock was that the first stroke of the hour bell should be correct to within one second per day. The tolerance is with reference to Greenwich Mean Time (BST in summer).[11][54][55] So, at twelve o'clock, for example, it is the first of the twelve hour-bell strikes that signifies the hour (the New Year on New Year's Eve at midnight). The time signalled by the last of the "six pips" (UTC) may be fractionally different.
