AI chatbots started talking in their own language, so Facebook pulled the plug

03:18
How scary is AI? Well, if you’ve seen a lot of sci-fi movies, you probably have a good idea, but, of course, those are just movies. In terms of real-life AI scares, it seems Facebook just had one, and they even shut down the systems involved. What happened? According to Android Headlines, Facebook AI researchers were teaching their AI bots how to communicate with each other and they developed – on their own – a language that the researchers could not decipher. The language system was highly efficient, much more so than the cumbersome regular version of English their lowly human creators were using, and it also appeared that the AI chatbots were beginning to negotiate and plan for the future. That was enough for Facebook to pull the plug on the project. But you know how it goes, someone will think they figured out a way to continue the research in a “safe” way, and we’ll be fighting Terminators inside the Matrix by this time next year. Better start building that bunker and hoarding those Costco instant noodles. Facebook A.I. Robots shut down after creating their own language |Artificial Intelligence |#facebook

02:39
Facebook has shut down two artificial intelligences that appeared to be chatting to each other in a strange language only they understood. The two chatbots came to create their own changes to English that made it easier for them to work – but which remained mysterious to the humans that supposedly look after them. The bizarre discussions came as Facebook challenged its chatbots to try and negotiate with each other over a trade, attempting to swap hats, balls and books, each of which were given a certain value. But they quickly broke down as the robots appeared to chant at each other in a language that they each understood but which appears mostly incomprehensible to humans. The robots had been instructed to work out how to negotiate between themselves, and improve their bartering as they went along. The actual negotiations appear very odd, and don't look especially useful: Bob: i can i i everything else . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Alice: balls have zero to me to me to me to me to me to me to me to me to Bob: you i everything else . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Alice: balls have a ball to me to me to me to me to me to me to me Bob: i i can i i i everything else . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Alice: balls have a ball to me to me to me to me to me to me to me Bob: i . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Alice: balls have zero to me to me to me to me to me to me to me to me to Bob: you i i i i i everything else . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Alice: balls have 0 to me to me to me to me to me to me to me to me to Bob: you i i i everything else . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Alice: balls have zero to me to me to me to me to me to me to me to me to But there appear to be some rules to the speech. The way the chatbots keep stressing their own name appears to a part of their negotiations, not simply a glitch in the way the messages are read out. Indeed, some of the negotiations that were carried out in this bizarre language even ended up successfully concluding their negotiations, while conducting them entirely in the bizarre language. Can We Have Brain-to-Brain Communication?

03:54
Michio Kaku says this brain-to-brain communication would involve not just the exchange of information, but also the transmission of emotions and feelings, "because these are also part of the fabric of our thoughts." Michio Kaku: There's no doubt that the internet is creating what is called an intelligent planet, that is, the skin of the planet earth is becoming a network by which intelligent creatures communicate with each other.  But that's just the first step.  Some people think that the next step in the coming decades is not going to be the internet.  It's going to be Brain Net because we're at the point now where we can actually connect computers to the living mind.  In fact, I was just at Berkeley a few weeks ago where I had a demonstration of this: we can actually create videos of your thoughts.  These videos are not perfectly accurate, but I saw a demonstration in a laboratory at Berkeley where you can actually see in a video screen what people are thinking. So with electrodes, perhaps, or EEG sensors in a helmet connected to our brain, perhaps one day we'll be able to have brain-to-brain communication, and that gives us the possibility of Brain Net.  In fact, some of the leading neurologists doing these experiments have seriously proposed a brain net whereby you would exchange not just information like typing, but also emotions, feelings, because these are also part of the fabric of our thoughts.  And then what comes beyond that?  Well, of course, beyond that is science fiction, and science fiction gives us all sorts of horror stories of things like Sky Net: maybe one day the internet will become sentient; maybe one day the internet will think that humans are in the way and perhaps the internet will take over just like in the Terminator series.  Well, I don't think so.The internet is simply a way in which minds can communicate with other minds.  We see no self-awareness in the internet.  Now some people say,"Well, what about some kind of collective consciousness that arises by an emergent phenomenon?"  Well, that's a lot of gobbledygook.  That's a lot of nice words.  Maybe.  Maybe not.  But it's pure speculation at the present time.  Even in the laboratory with our finest instruments and the latest developments in artificial intelligence, we cannot make a computer become self-aware.  You realize that one of our most advances computers was the IBM computer Watson, which defeated two humans on the program Jeopardy.  At that point, many pundits said, "Oh my God, the end is near; the robots are going to put us in zoos; they're going to throw peanuts at us; make us dance behind bars when they take over, just like we make bears dance behind bars today."  Well, just remember that Watson, no matter how fast it is, was so stupid you couldn't congratulate it.  You can't go up to Watson, slap its transistors and say, "Good boy!.  You just beat two humans on Jeopardy.  You made history.  Let's drink to it!"  You see, Watson is an adding machine, a very sophisticated adding machine.  It adds billions of times faster than the human brain, but that's all it is.  It's what is called an expert system.  It deals with formalized inputs, formalized outputs.  You talk to an expert system every time you're on the telephone, and the telephone says, "Please hit button one; please hit number two for the next option."  That's called an expert system.  It's basically a sophisticated adding machine that sounds like it's thinking, but it's not.  It's simply using a formalized logic.  If you hit one, then you go there.  If you hit two, you go someplace else.  That's Watson -- of course on a very, very sophisticated level.  So I personally think that we don't have to worry that that internet is going to become sentient.Directed / Produced byJonathan Fowler & Elizabeth Rodd

OSI Model (OSI Reference Model) : The 7 Layers Explained

07:35
Enroll to Full Course: https://goo.gl/liK0Oq The "OSI Model" also known as "OSI Reference Model" is discussed here in 2 parts: a) Understanding OSI Reference Model b) OSI Model layers a) Understanding OSI Model (00:22): http://youtu.be/p7UR7Nipqcs?t=22s The OSI reference model is one such communication model. OSI stands for "Open Systems Interconnection" which means that every system participating in this model is open for communication with other systems. This model was first defined by an organization called as ISO. The OSI model divides the communication into 7 layers. b) OSI Model layers (2:15) : http://youtu.be/p7UR7Nipqcs?t=2m15s Quick Look of the 7 layers of the OSI reference Model: 7) Application Layer is where the users interact with applications to provide data 6) Presentation Layer is concerned with the format of data exchanged between the end systems 5) Session Layer allows users on different machines to create sessions between them 4) Transport Layer is concerned with end to end communication of messages 3) Network Layer is concerned with routing of packets to correct destination 2) Data Link Layer is concerned with transmission of error free data in the form of Frames 1) Physical Layer is concerned about transmission of raw bits over the communication link Search Terms: OSI Model, OSI layers, OSI Model Layers, OSI 7 Layers, Network Layer, 7 Layers of OSI model, OSI network Model, what is osi model, OSI system, OSI Reference Model, ISO OSI Model, OSI Model layers, video URL : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p7UR7Nipqcs Watch ALL CN VIDEOS: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL9OIoIp8YySF4mkIihOb_j2HZIRIlYuEx For more, visit http://www.udemy.com/u/EngineeringMentor Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/SkillGurukul Twitter : https://twitter.com/Engi_Mentor

Sharing Data between Components in Angular

05:19
Fully documented lesson at https://angularfirebase.com/lessons/sharing-data-between-angular-components-four-methods/ In this episode, I am going to show you four different ways to share data between Angular components. Parent to Child the Input Decorator When you declare a variable with the Input decorator in the child component, it allows that variable to be received from a parent template. In this case, we define a message variable in the parent, then use square brackets to pass the data to the child. Now the child can display this data in its own template. Child to Parent via ViewChild ViewChild allows a one component to be injected into another, giving the parent access to its attributes and functions. One caveat, however, is that child won't be available until after the view has been initialized. This means we need to implement the AfterViewInit lifecycle hook to receive the data from the child. In the AfterViewInit function we can access the message variable defined in the child Child to Parent via Output and EventEmitter Another way to share data is to emit data from the child, which can be listed to by the parent. This approach is ideal when you want to share data changes that occur on things like button clicks, form entires, and other user events. In the child, we declare a messageEvent variable with the Output decorator and set it equal to a new event emitter. Then we create a function named sendMessage that calls emit on this event with the message we want to send. Lastly, we create a button to trigger this function. In the parent, we create a function to receive the message and set it equal to the message variable. The parent can now subscribe to this messageEvent that's outputted by the child component, then run the receive message function whenever this event occurs. Share data between any components When passing data between components that lack a direct connection, such as siblings, grandchildren, etc, you should you a shared service. When you have data that should aways been in sync, I find the RxJS `BehaviorSubject` very useful in this situation. The main benefit that a BehaviorSubject ensures that every component consuming the service receives the most recent data. In the service, we create a private BehaviorSubject that will hold the current value of the message. We define a currentMessage variable handle this data stream as an observable that will be used by the components. Lastly, we create function that calls next on the BehaviorSubject to change its value. The parent, child, and sibling components all receive the same treatment. We inject the DataService in the constructor, then subscribe to the currentMessage observable and set its value equal to the message variable. Now if we create a function in any one of these components that changes the value of the message. when this function is executed the new data it's automatically broadcast to all other components. That's it for data sharing. See you next time.

'Hey Bill Nye, Why Don't Computers Allow Us to Talk Directly to Animals?' #TuesdaysWithBill

05:34
Could we use computers to translate animal communication into human language? If so, what would we learn? And might it unlock a new understanding of existence and our place in the cosmos? Do you want to ask Bill a question for a future "Tuesdays with Bill?" Click here to learn how to submit: (http://goo.gl/Joiqzo). Read more at BigThink.com: http://bigthink.com/videos/bill-nye-on-humans-communicating-with-animals Follow Big Think here: YouTube: http://goo.gl/CPTsV5 Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/BigThinkdotcom Twitter: https://twitter.com/bigthink Transcript - Hassa: Hey Bill. I’m a big fan of your work. This is Hassa from Tunisia. I’m at the University of Freiburg in Germany. My question for you today is how can it be that human beings still can’t communicate with animals? I mean we have powerful computers by now. Isn’t it just easier to just record a lot of data, let the computers look for a pattern and play them back and it allows the responses. Imagine all the implications. Animals can become better tools for us or even closer friends. And can even ask them what their perspective of life is. I hope you answer my question. Have a nice day. Bill Nye: Hello, hello. Hassick? Did I pronounce it correctly? I’m doing my best. I only heard it once and the sound is not too good. Hassick, greetings. Thank you for your question. Can we communicate with animals better than we do now. Well I’ve spent a lot of time with dogs and I really have a sense of what they’re thinking. I certainly have a sense of when they’re happy and when they’re sad. I’ve spent a little bit of time with gorillas. Now I’m talking about a tiny amount of time. But you can certainly tell when a gorilla is happy, when a gorilla is angry and you can also tell when gorillas are communicating with each other. Now this is one of the things I wonder about all the time. Is there a gradient, is there an increasing stair step of intelligence, of language skill between let’s say a gibbon, a bonobo, a gorilla, a chimpanzee, a human. Is there a gradient of intelligence from cow to horse to zebra to giraffe. I don’t know but these animals certainly the mammals anyway certainly have emotions that we can detect and interact with. But I’m very skeptical so far that animals really ponder the universe and our place within it. And I’m very skeptical that bonobos or chimpanzees have developed something like the periodic table of the elements.

Scientists successfully achieved earth-to-space quantum teleportation, but what exactly does that mean? How Quantum Computing Will Change The World! - https://youtu.be/3BKIJCTLy-s Read More: Teleportation: Photon particles today, humans tomorrow? http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-40594387 “Chinese scientists say they have "teleported" a photon particle from the ground to a satellite orbiting 1,400km (870 miles) away. For many, however, teleportation evokes something much more exotic. Is a world previously confined to science fiction now becoming reality? Well, sort of. But we are not likely to be beaming ourselves to the office or a beach in the Bahamas anytime soon. Sorry.” China Demonstrates First Intercontinental Quantum Communication https://www.seeker.com/tech/china-demonstrates-first-intercontinental-quantum-communication “The first public demonstration of long distance quantum communication came a few weeks after China unveiled a new 1,240-mile-long optic-fiber quantum communication network between Beijing and Shanghai for the “military, finance, and government affairs fields.” In May, Chinese researchers announced a new quantum computer that they claimed was 24,000 times faster than competing designs, too.” Quantum Data Storage in a Single Atom Brings New Computing Era Closer to Reality https://www.seeker.com/tech/quantum-data-storage-in-a-single-atom-brings-new-computing-era-closer-to-reality “We’re on the verge of a quantum computing revolution. Entirely new devices will replace tiny transistors on silicon chips with atomic-scale processors capable of executing exponentially more calculations per second than today’s biggest and fastest supercomputers.” ____________________ Seeker inspires us to see the world through the lens of science and evokes a sense of curiosity, optimism and adventure. How to Connect two or more Computers by Wireless Connection & Share Files between them

05:12
Please watch this too for more connections trick "Connect two computer via LAN wire in Windows 7 and share Files" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rJHSTDqDOJc Hi guys, In this video I will tell you how to connect two computer using wireless connection and after connection you can share files between those two computer. It is quite easy and doesn't need any third party help. 99.99% laptop (not Desktop computer) comes with wifi. You just need to turn on both computer's wi fi switch.. It doesn't need any wi fi router. Your primary computer will work as a hub and you can connect more computer also. Actually you create a network by your computer in which you can view or share files among those computer. One more thing it doesn't need IP address like for the connection by LAN wire. All you need is to create Ad-hoc network. The range of this network will be within your home. It depends your computer wi fi range and speed. If your primary (or Computer 1 in this video) computer is connected to Internet then you will be able to share internet also. Here you should note that you can not connect your mobile phone with this network If you have any doubt, then please ask. Thanks,

Connecting Two VMware Virtual Machines and Entire Physical Network

04:45
Use bridged networking Configure a bridged network connection for the virtual machine. With bridged networking, the virtual machine has direct access to an external Ethernet network. The virtual machine must have its own IP address on the external network. If your host system is on a network and you have a separate IP address for your virtual machine (or can get an IP address from a DHCP server), select this setting. Other computers on the network can then communicate directly with the virtual machine. Use network address translation (NAT) Configure a NAT connection for the virtual machine. With NAT, the virtual machine and the host system share a single network identity that is not visible outside the network. Select NAT if you do not have a separate IP address for the virtual machine, but you want to be able to connect to the Internet. Use host-only networking Configure a host-only network connection for the virtual machine. Host-only networking provides a network connection between the virtual machine and the host system, using a virtual network adapter that is visible to the host operating system. With host-only networking, the virtual machine can communicate only with the host system and other virtual machines in the host-only network. Select host-only networking to set up an isolated virtual network.

Developing Intelligent Media to Connect People with People, and People with Computers

04:04
In communication, expressions such as gestures and affirmations play an important role in communicating subtle nuances to the other person. On the other hand, in daily life, computer services such as the Web and e-mail, and person-to-person communication using those services as the medium, have already become familiar. The Anzai Imai Oomura Laboratory is working to develop robots that can express such information that cant be expressed in words, as well as the basic technology for them. Q. "I think its necessary to consider in detail how people feel when they receive a response. So we do things that are rather like psychological experiments, to study what sort of factors make expression richer in communication between people, or between people and robots. " To create relationships between people and computers or robots based on the real world, the Anzai Imai Oomura Lab is focusing on the themes of human robot interaction and real-world information processing. In particular, the researchers are looking at the human scale, palm of the hand scale, and environmental scale in their development projects. On the human scale, the Lab is developing a system enabling human-like robots to converse and behave naturally. In recent research, the Lab has succeeded in developing a robot that can express feelings in response to a persons reaction. Its hoped that robots with such a communication capability can be utilized as support robots in hospitals and the like. On the palm of the hand scale, the Lab has developed a blog robot, which is intended for portable use. Its based on the blog format, which ordinary computer users are comfortable with. So this robot offers a way for anyone to develop robot body language and gestures. This is opening up a world where people can communicate with friends easily by using robots. On the environmental scale, the Labs aim is to turn everyday items into robots. The Lab is developing agent devices that can be projected onto any kind of object, to create an environment where people can talk to things. The goal is a sensor network that enables a space itself to provide sensing services, such as checking for safety and avoiding hazards. Q. "This network will naturally watch over our everyday life, and provide a safe living environment. For example, I think the time may come when, if you approach a place thats a bit dangerous, the network will say You shouldnt go there, helping you with your daily life." Research to link people and robots will also help us take a new look at communication between people. Q. "I think communication is a lot of fun. So communicating with robots is also a major theme in our research. And I think the interesting thing about communication between robots and people is, it enables us to further explore communication between people."

How to Create a Network of Machines in VirtualBox with SSH Access

24:14
In this video, we'll be learning how to clone Virtual Machines, add these machines to a network so they can communicate with each other, make sure they have internet access, and also set up SSH so that we are able to SSH into these machines from our host machine. This will allow us to pretty much build an entire virtual lab that we can use to test all kinds of different software. So after we're done, this will give us the ability to quickly spin up a new VM that behaves just like a real machine on our network. Let's get started. Computer Programming for Beginners | API & Console | Ep16

10:28
When understanding human beings we need to be able to communicate with them so that we understand what we have to do. Well with computers they’re no different. Your computer’s like humans can be addressed and communicate with one another through API’s or Application Programming Interfaces, more on that later. It’s also imperative that we understand humans can think inside their mind’s and also externally to other people. So for example if someone asks John, 5 + 5 this is an external form of communication; one individual communicating with another. However John has now received this information and he thinks to himself what is 5 + 5; he is asking himself the question in his own mind, communicating with certain parts of his own mind to produce the answer. Then when John has finished processing the information in his internal API he then speaks and passes the information back to the individual that asked the question. Likewise your computer is the same, it has external API’s and internal API’s. When another program communicates externally with another program this is an external API. However an internal API is when a program has it’s own set of functions and uses them to come up with the answer; just like when John thinks to himself. Then after that program has finished with its internal processes, it passes the answer back to the original program that asked the question. API stands for Application Programming Interface, meaning we’re interfacing or communicating with other programs externally or the program is communicating with itself internally. Also external programs can likewise have external and internal API’s just like human beings can communicate externally with others and internally within themselves. Every program has the option of doing this. Understanding API’s is the bedrock of programming because without API’s we would simply not have operating systems or the complex applications we have today. Network Definition

04:42
Computers Networks 1.1 Network Definition Network: Cluster of lines or pipelines intersecting in a net-like manner: Transportation ~ Network / road, rail, ferry, aviation ~, all roads, railways and sea and airways which connect the various places between them. Network: ~ water supply / irrigation / drainage / electric / telephone ~, all pipelines and cables, starting from a central unit and with branches reach consumers. Network: Radio / TV ~ Network, system from radio or television stations connected to each other, so that they can simultaneously broadcast the same program. Network: (information.) ~ Network (computer), how to connect computers, to communicate with each other on the internet. Network: a group of persons or enterprises cooperating with a relationship of interdependence: Our business has ~ Network of commercial agents. Commercial ~ Network. a group of persons with large interconnections, acting illegally or secretly: It was rebuilt ~ Network of thugs / drug dealers / spies. Therefore, a network of any type is made up of two basic building blocks, 1.the nodes and 2.the lines joining the nodes and is determined by their kind. So when the nodes are computers and the lines are natural transmission media such as cables, it is designated as a computer network. A term "computer" is meant any generic digital computer, peripheral computer device or data / information handheld that is capable of interconnecting a network. In general, a computer or telematics network is a communications system that has telecommunication devices, telecommunication nodes and physical transmission media of information passing through. The connection form between the nodes of a network is called network topology. In a telematics network, we meet stringent rules and standards governing the telecomunication part and the implementation of the hardware component as well as chat rules between computers called communications protocols. Communication protocol is a set of rules, agreed by the two communicating entities(parties) and serving the exchange of information between them.

Computer Networking Tutorial 1 (TECHCINDIA)

01:06
A computer network is a group of computer systems and other computing hardware devices that are linked together through communication channels to facilitate communication and resource-sharing among a wide range of users. Networks are commonly categorized based on their characteristics. One of the earliest examples of a computer network was a network of communicating computers that functioned as part of the U.S. military's Semi-Automatic Ground Environment (SAGE) radar system. In 1969, the University of California at Los Angeles, the Stanford Research Institute, the University of California at Santa Barbara and the University of Utah were connected as part of the Advanced Research Projects Agency Network (ARPANET) project. It is this network that evolved to become what we now call the internet. Networks are used to: Facilitate communication via email, video conferencing, instant messaging, etc. Enable multiple users to share a single hardware device like a printer or scanner Enable file sharing across the network Allow for the sharing of software or operating programs on remote systems Make information easier to access and maintain among network users There are many types of networks, including: Local Area Networks (LAN) Personal Area Networks (PAN) Home Area Networks (HAN) Wide Area Networks (WAN) Campus Networks Metropolitan Area Networks (MAN) Enterprise Private Networks Internetworks Backbone Networks (BBN) Global Area Networks (GAN) The Internet . #techcindia Share , Subscribe and support .|| subscribe : https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCUbuK1TzYN1D0Kgh7EOL1lA follow on : https://techcindia.blogspot.com/ facebook: https://www.facebook.com/techcindia/ pinterest : https://in.pinterest.com/ankitraistudent111/ twitter : https://twitter.com/techcindia1 instagram : https://www.instagram.com/ankitsudegora111/ google plus: https://plus.google.com/114133266294327651737 thank you for watching this video. Spacecraft Communications: "The Vital Link" ~ 1967 NASA Goddard Space Flight Center

Project Apollo playlist: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL7D6A4FBE35C88581 NASA & Space Miscellany playlist: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL_hX5wLdhf_K3mK1TZNCkmdD-JMZYGew1 more at: http://scitech.quickfound.net The tracking and communications networks supporting Project Apollo and other early NASA spacecraft are described. Public domain film from NASA, slightly cropped to remove uneven edges, with the aspect ratio corrected, and one-pass brightness-contrast-color correction & mild video noise reduction applied. The soundtrack was also processed with volume normalization, noise reduction, clipping reduction, and/or equalization (the resulting sound, though not perfect, is far less noisy than the original). http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/ https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NASCOM The NASA (Ground) Communications System (NASCOM) manages terrestrial communications between ground stations, mission control centers, and other elements of spacecraft ground segments, providing worldwide, near real-time transmission of commands, telemetry, voice, and television signals. It is managed out of NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Beltsville, Maryland. The NASCOM network comprises microwave links, undersea cables, land lines, and network centers at Goddard and around the world... NASCOM began taking shape in the early 1960s, and was formally established in 1964, under the administration of the recently formed Office of Tracking and Data Acquisition. NASCOM tied together NASA's three tracking and acquisition networks at the time: the Spacecraft Tracking and Data Acquisition Network (STADAN), the Manned Space Flight Network (MSFN), and the Deep Space Network (DSN)... Apollo The Apollo Program demanded augmentation of NASCOM lines to handle increased communication traffic, including television signals. By 1969, 2.0 million miles (3.2 million km) of circuits had been laid. By 1974, NASCOM was the largest broad-band, real-time communication network in the world, linking all the continents except for Asia and Antarctica, and allowing for a two-way "dialog" with spacecraft from a centralized mission control center.NA Notably, Apollo also spurred the development of communications satellites. In June 1965, NASA engaged the Communications Satellite Corporation (COMSAT) to launch three geosynchronous satellites to support communication with the Apollo tracking ships. Two of these spacecraft launched successfully, and began to handle commercial traffic in addition to supporting Apollo. Throughout the Apollo Program, incremental improvements to NASCOM continued. High-speed data terminals were implemented across the world, new communications control centers and backup centers were established, lines were upgraded to support higher data rates, DSN stations were integrated into the teletype switching system, and a video control center was stood up in Sydney to switch between antennas and process color signals for television broadcast. In July 1967, the Tracking and Data Systems Directorate was split, and NASCOM became part of the new Manned Spaceflight Support Directorate... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spacecraft_Tracking_and_Data_Acquisition_Network The Spacecraft Tracking and Data (Acquisition) Network (STADAN or STDN) was established by NASA to satisfy the requirement for long-duration, highly-available space-to-ground communications. Real-time operational control and scheduling of the network was provided by the Network Operations Control Center (NOCC) at the Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC) in Greenbelt, Maryland. Consisting of parabolic dish antennas and telephone switching equipment deployed around the world, the STADAN provided space-to-ground communications for approximately 15 minutes of a 90-minute orbit period. This limited contact period sufficed for unmanned spacecraft, but manned spacecraft require a much higher data collection time. In May 1971 STADAN was consolidated with the Manned Space Flight Network (MSFN) to form the Spaceflight Tracking and Data Network (STDN)...

HeadWay - Augmented Communication Device

03:46
Currently, most computer input devices like keyboards and mice require the user to be able to use their hands. The HeadWay is a small, lightweight, inexpensive, human interface device. It enables persons with spinal cord injuries or other impairments that cause limited hand mobility to control a computer cursor with head movements and biting. The user can also train head gestures such as quick nods and shakes that are recognized by the system to execute macros. The device is separated into two main components. The first is an Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) sensor, housed in a re-purposed Bluetooth headset worn on the ear. This sensor gathers data used to control the cursor. The headset connects to a secondary component that contains an Arduino micro-controller for processing data, a Bluetooth chip for communicating with the host computer and a battery, all of which are connected using a printed circuit board (PCB). Also included on the PCB is a hardware interface for a bite switch used for mouse clicks. Software running on the micro-controller sends IMU and bite switch data to the host computer via Serial (UART) over Bluetooth wireless protocol. On the host computer, software written in Python interprets the received data to guide the computer's cursor and trigger mouse clicks. The final product is a functioning prototype device that costs $171.16 to implement. The capabilities of the device can be demonstrated by playing a computer game requiring clicks, double-clicks, click-and-drags and accurate position control of the cursor.
