Just like all matter water has physical properties that can be measured and calculated. To find the mass of water you will need a beaker and a scale. First find the mass of the empty beaker. Next, fill up the beaker to your desired amount. Then use the scale to find the mass of the filled beaker. To find the mass of just the water, subtract the mass of the empty beaker from the full beaker. Our sample is 100 grams. The volume of water can be measured using a graduated cylinder. Our sample is 100ml. Density is calculated by dividing the mass by the volume. Plug in our measured mass at 100 grams and divide that by our measured volume of 100 ml. Water's density is 1 g/ml. Objects with a density greater than 1g/ml will sink when placed in water. Objects with a density less than one will float when placed in water. If a block has a density of 0.1g/cm3 it will float because it's density is less than 1. Another block with a density of 0.5g/cm3 will also float because its density is less than 1. Notice that more of the block is below the waterline. A block with a density of 0.9g/cm3 is more dense so more of the block will be below the waterline. We can see that as density increases more of the block is below the waterline. Scientists have discovered that the blocks density will tell us exactly where the block will come to rest. If the density is 0.1g/cm3 then 10% will be below the waterline. To calculate where a block will come to rest just convert the density to a percent. Density explains why ice floats. If you freeze water it expands. The black dots represent the atoms in water. No new atoms were are added to the water so because of the expansion there is more room between the atoms. Compared to the atoms in liquid water, the atoms in the ice are not as tightly packed together causing the ice to float. Try calculating density of ice for yourself. If you get a number less than one it will float. You can also predict how much of it will be below the waterline.

A continuity equation is the mathematical way to express this kind of statement. Heavier fractions (kerosene, diesel) are used as fuels and lubricating oils as well as to boost petrol production by cracking the larger molecules into smaller fragments. It shows the composition of a typical Australian crude oil and the end use of petroleum products. Although alkanes are useful as fuels, alkanes are unreactive and as a consequence not very useful starting materials for the petrochemical industry. Alkenes however, with their reactive double bond, are ideal starting molecules for synthesis reactions. Ethene (ethylene) and propene (propylene) In particular, are important raw materials for the production of a huge range of synthetic carbon compounds including plastics, pharmaceuticals, insecticides and industrial chemicals. Ethene is the most versatile and widely used raw material in the petrochemical industry. However because very little ethene is found in natural gas or crude oil, it must be produced from other hydrocarbons by a process known as ‘cracking’. ‘Cracking’ is a chemical process by which hydrocarbons with higher molecular masses are converted to hydrocarbons of lower molecular mass. During this process chemical bonds within the hydrocarbon molecules are broken. Since ethene is a very simple molecule it can be synthesised from many different hydrocarbons. Ethene is usually produced in one of two ways: • catalytic cracking of some of the fractions separated during petroleum refining, or • steam (thermal) cracking of ethane and propane from natural gas deposits. Catalytic cracking and petroleum fractions: The proportions of different fractions obtained by the fractional distillation of petroleum usually do not match the demands of the market. There is greater demand for some fractions than for others. For example, the market for the gasoline fraction used as petrol for motor vehicles is huge but the demand for higher boiling point fractions is not as great even though these heavier fractions may make up more than 50% of the crude oil. Oil refineries have developed methods in which fractions containing hydrocarbons of higher molecular mass can be ‘cracked’ to produce hydrocarbons with a lower molecular mass. The fractions used (called feedstock) are the higher molecular mass fractions for which there is less market demand. The products of cracking include short chain alkanes that can be used as petrol, branched chain alkanes that improve the performance of petrol, alkenes, particularly ethene (ethylene) and propene (propylene), and hydrogen. The following equation represents the cracking of decane to produce octane and ethene. Cracking of petroleum fractions was first achieved by heating the fraction to very high temperatures in the absence of air. This process, called thermal cracking, was very expensive because of the energy required to maintain these high temperatures. It was also difficult to control the production of the end products as there are many different places where bond breaking could occur. An important development was the use of catalysts, which allowed the process to be carried out at much lower temperatures. This process, called catalytic cracking or ‘cat cracking', is carried out in a catalytic cracker like the one. Many gas reactions in industry are catalysed using solid inorganic catalysts onto which the gaseous reactants are adsorbed. These catalysts adsorb the reactants, thereby weakening their bonds and reducing the activation energy for the reaction. The main catalysts for the catalytic cracking of petroleum fractions are a group of silicate minerals called zeolites. Zeolites are crystalline substances composed of aluminium, silicon and oxygen. The catalyst is usually in the form of a fine powder that is circulated with the feedstock in the catalytic cracker. Zeolite crystals have a three-dimensional network structure containing a large number of tiny pores or channels similar to honeycomb. The reactant molecules are adsorbed in these pores where their reactions are catalysed. It is possible to synthesise zeolites with pores of different sizes. Specific zeolites have been developed that can be used with different feedstock and provide greater control of the products formed under different conditions of temperature and pressure. Steam Cracking of ethane and propane: The second method of ethene production involves converting ethane and propane to ethene by a process known as steam cracking. This is a form of thermal cracking and is the major source of ethene in the petrochemical industry. Ethane from natural gas deposits is fed a hot metal tube with steam.

Thanks to separate orifices for condensate and air, they provide continuous condensate drainage and air venting-even under conditions of zero pressure. All the benefits detailed here have been designed into Armstrong F&Ts through long experience in the manufacture of pressure float-type traps. They assure you of optimum operating efficiency for long periods with minimum trouble. How they work Float and thermostatic traps are mechanical units that operate on both density and temperature principles. The float valve operates on the density principle. A level connects the ball float to the valve and seat. Once condensate reaches a certain level in the trap, the float rises, opening the orifice and draining condensate. A water seal formed by the condensate prevents live steam loss Since the discharge valve is under water, it is not capable of venting air and non-condensables. When the accumulation of air and con-condensable gases causes a significant temperature drop, a thermostatic air vent in the top of the trap discharges them. The thermostatic vent opens at a temperature a few degrees below saturation, so it's able to handle a large volume of air-through an entirely separate orifice-but at a slightly reduced temperature. Built as tough as the jobs they do Armstrong float and thermostatic traps are unique in their super heavy duty construction. Armstrong uses high quality ASTM A48 Class 30 cast iron or ASTM A216 WCB cast steel-normally found in pressure vessels rated to 250 psi (17 bar) or 465 psi (32 bar). Internal mechanisms are made from stainless steel and are heavily reinforced. No brass cotter pins here. Valves and seats are stainless steel, hardened, ground and lapped to withstand the erosive forces of flashing condensate.
