How to Play Chess: The Complete Guide for Beginners

12:46
How to Play Chess. Who doesn't want to be a cool intellectual and play chess like a pro? This game definitely stands out from everything else and has tons of admirers all over the world. So do you want to join in and learn the basic rules and even some winning tricks and techniques? In that case, this video guide is what you’ve been looking for. To win and become a true chess champion, your task is to checkmate your opponent's king. It may sound like a piece of cake, but it's way more complicated than you might think! Checkmate basically means putting the king in a position where he’ll be captured because he can't move or be protected by any other piece. The more of your opponent's pieces you capture, the easier it'll be to checkmate. Just don't focus all your energy on this. Your own king should be properly protected at all times so that your opponent can’t get to him. To win and become a true chess champion, your task is to checkmate your opponent's king. There are files, which are the columns going up and down, pointing at you and your opponent and marked from A to H. And then there are ranks: the horizontal rows from 1 to 8. -The rook is placed at the corners of the board, which are A1 and H1 for one player and A8 and H8 for the other. The best thing about rooks is that they can move any number of vacant squares both vertically and horizontally. -Knights are placed on squares B1 and G1 for one player and B8 and G8 for the other. Unlike rooks, knights can jump over other pieces, and they're actually the only piece that can do that. -Bishops can move over any number of free squares in a diagonal direction. Just like rooks, they can capture an opponent's piece standing in their way by stopping on that piece's square. -You only get one queen (D1 for a white queen or D8 for a black queen), and she’s the most powerful piece on the board — basically the rook and bishop combined. The king's place is one of the 2 last empty squares: E1 and E8. The king isn't as powerful as the queen and can only move one square at a time horizontally, vertically, or diagonally. -Pawns take the rows from A2 to H2 for one player and from A7 to H7 for the other. Pawns move one square forward with one exception: the first time they move, pawns can go forward either one or 2 squares. -Checkmate basically means putting the king in a position where he’ll be captured because he can't move or be protected by any other piece. The more of your opponent's pieces you capture, the easier it'll be to checkmate. -Pawns, for example, are stronger when they're together in chains to protect one another. Knights can control up to 8 squares, but when you put them near the edge this number gets cut in half. Bishops are at their strongest when they're on or near long diagonals - they can control more squares. Rooks have the most power in open files. -If you want to make your own rules on the chessboard and be the main force of the game, try to control the center of the board. Your opening can help you do that: a D or E pawn is a great way to start and open the center of the board. -“En passant” is a special capture move that a pawn can make. If you're playing with white, your pawn must be on the fifth rank for it, and it's the fourth rank for black. -If a pawn reaches the far side of the board, which is the eighth rank for white and the first rank for black, it must immediately be promoted to any other piece (except for the king). -To make the “castling” move, move your king 2 squares toward any rook, and then hop that rook over the king so it lands on the square next to the king. 3 Basic Opening Strategy Principles | Chess

I'm going to talk to you today about the three principles to opening strategy. So when we get to the game we're always like, 'Uh, what do I do? There's so many pieces. I don't know how to start." Well I'm going to give you three steps that are going to help you create a strong, confident opening. First thing that we need to understand is these four center squares. These are considered a super square because this is where the center of the board is, the control center. For example, if I have my knight in the center of the board, my knight can control up to eight different squares, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8. We can see that this is a very strong place for my knight. If I have my knight on the side of the board it can only control up to four squares, 1, 2, 3, 4. Therefore, my knight is stronger in the center whereas most pieces are stronger in the center of the board. So at the beginning of the game you want to think about center control. First thing we can try and do is get our pawns into the center. Very important to try to get our pawns to control the center. The next important step that we want to focus on is piece development. Now I like to think about my pieces as they are working for me. I want to give my pieces a job. If they're sitting back here they're not happy and they're not doing anything. So my next step is to bring my pieces out and have them working for me. Usually we bring out the knights before the bishops. So I can bring my knight to F-3 and my other knight to C-3 and then I'm bringing them towards the center. Notice how I did not bring my knight to H-3, that would not be a good choice. Towards the center. Next, I want to bring my bishops out, again towards the center controlling the center squares. The next step that we always want to consider is king safety, very important. I like to consider the king like a baby. The reason I consider the king a baby is because we always want to protect our babies just like we always want to protect our king. Therefore, the best way to protect your king at the beginning of the game is to castle. Now we have two places, two ways that we can castle. You can either castle on the king's side or on the queen's side. Right away I can see that I can castle on the king's side. To castle I move my king two spaces and then bring my rook to the other side and now my king is stuck behind a little fortress or, to keep with the theme of a baby, a crib and it is protected and safe. Just to review, the three important principles are controlling the center, piece development, and king safety. Those are the three things that we can do at the beginning of the game to go into the middle game confidently.

Carlsen vs Caruana - Duel of Giants on Amazon: http://bit.ly/CarlsenVsCaruana Carlsen vs Caruana - Duel of Giants on Forward Chess: http://bit.ly/forwardchess More information on the World Chess Championship (from chess24): The 2018 FIDE World Chess Championship is a 12-game match taking place between Norwegian World Champion Magnus Carlsen and his US challenger Fabiano Caruana. The match starts in The College, London on November 9th and will be won by the first player to reach 6.5 points in the classical games. If those end in a 6-6 tie tiebreaks will be played on November 28th. The prize fund is 1 million euros, split 60% to the winner and 40% to the loser. If the match is decided in tiebreaks that changes to 55/45. The classical time control is 100 minutes for 40 moves, then 50 minutes for 20 moves and then 15 minutes to the end of the game, with a 30-second increment from move 1. The tiebreaks begin with four 25+10 rapid games. If still tied two 5+3 blitz games will be played, and if drawn again up to four more blitz mini-matches will follow. If still equal, one last Armageddon game will be played, where White has 5 minutes to Black's 4, but a draw will make the player with Black the World Champion. There will be a 3-second increment from move 61. Official website: worldchess.com Thanks to Lennart Ootes for letting me use his fabulous pictures! Founded in 1986, it maintains and sells massive databases, containing most historic games, that permit analysis that had not been possible prior to computing.[1][2] Databases organise data from prior games; engines provide analyses of games and perfect play in some endgames.[3][4] Contents 1 The company 2 The database 3 The engines 4 Playchess server 5 News site 6 Other publications 7 See also 8 References 9 External links The company The company is located in Hamburg, Germany. ChessBaseUSA markets their products in the United States, and some products are released in partnership with Viva Media (USA). The database Image of ChessBase 8.0 running under Windows XP (year 2008). The company hosts an extensive online database. As of 12 November 2017, this contained 7.8 million games.[5] This online database can be accessed directly through their database programs. (As of 28 August 2010, this contained 5.2 million games) It used to be possible to utilise the functionality of this database from Chessbase's Pocket Fritz 2,[6] which runs on PDAs, but some of this functionality was reduced in early 2006. ChessBase is also the name of a popular commercial database program produced by the company for storing and searching records of games of chess. The first version was built for Garry Kasparov under Atari ST in January 1987[7] and later for Microsoft Windows. ChessBase uses a proprietary format for storing games (CBV), but can also handle games in portable game notation (PGN). The proprietary format uses less hard drive space and manages information that is not possible in PGN. The software converts files from PGN to ChessBase format, or from ChessBase to PGN. The program permits searches for games, and positions in games, based on player names, openings, some tactical and strategic motifs, material imbalance, and features of the position. The ChessBase database software integrates chess analysis engines, such as Fritz, Junior, Shredder (all Chessbase products), and several non-commercial engines, including Crafty written by Professor Robert Hyatt, Comet, and Anaconda. The current version of the ChessBase program is ChessBase 14.[8] The last version of ChessBase to use the old style (pre "ribbon") interface is ChessBase 10. ChessBase 11 adopted the ribbon interface. The last update to ChessBase 10 was Service Pack 6 ('SP6'), dated December 19, 2011. An Instant Classic at the 2018 World Chess Championship | Game 6

43:44
World Chess Champion Magnus Carlsen of Norway defends his title against challenger Fabiano Caruana of the United States in Game 6 of the 2018 World Chess Championship match that is being held in London. It's a best of 12 games where the first player to earn 6.5 points earns the lion's share of a $1.14 million prize pool, and the title of "World Chess Champion". Both players entered game 6 deadlocked with 2.5 points each. Carlsen, in this classic game 6, tested Caruana for the first time in the match with e4, after having played both d4 and c4 in games 2 & 4 respectively. Caruana, not surprisingly, employed a favorite defense of his in that of the Petrov. A highly atypical 4th move by Carlsen sparked a unusally high number of knights moves after only 14 turns. The middlegame was rich with plans, and the endgame is one which left a lasting impression on all who observed the 6.5 hour battle. PGN: 1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nf6 3. Nxe5 d6 4. Special Chess Rule: En Passant; Basic Chess Lesson, Tips Tutorial - Pawn Moves, Ampasant Ampersand

05:48
En Passant is a Special Rule of Chess. This involves special pawn moves which are exception to the general form of capture. En passant is sometimes wrongly spelt as ampersand or ampasant. En passant is a French phrase which means 'in passing'. This basic chess tutorial will help you learn the different types of moves your pawn can play (be it white or black). It is surprising to see that not many chess players are aware of this rule. In this chess lesson, I will teach you the basic chess ideas, tips & tricks that you can play around with to make best use of this rule to your advantage & win more games fast. This rule is sometimes also used as a special strategy & tactics to surprise your opponent. Generally, captures are done in chess where the capturing piece moves onto the square of the piece it is going to capture. But En Passant is an exception to this rule. In en passant, the capturing piece, that is, the pawn, moves to a different square than that of the target pawn. These pawn moves can be very useful in chess end games where the pawns are fighting for promotion. 2 Important Conditions of En Passant: ► The option to capture is available for one move only, that is, the immediate next move. You cannot use this anytime during the game. ► This option can be exercised only if the pawn has moved 2 squares on its first move. It cannot be used if the pawn moves one square at a time. Chess Game Review #11 - 1887 vs 1903

25:01
I picked a chess game from my friends list to review. I share my thoughts on the game which was between a player with a rating of 1887 and the other with a rating of 1903. Move order matters! With the endgame being over before it began, the main focus was drawn towards the opening and middlegame in this specific brief battle. Are you a fan of the Smith-Morra Gambit? In this 1-hour free video lesson, she goes through lots of games of great champions and also games played by herself. Take, for example, this beautiful demonstration of Bobby Fischer.Judit Polgar analyses Fischer's game In this position, originated from Fischer's favorite Sozin Attack, Black just played 11...Nc5, trying to capture the strong Bb3. But, in doing so, he delayed his development. How to punish Black for his rashness? Fischer played the thematic piece sacrifice 12.Bd5! After 12...exd5 13.exd5+ Kd7 14.b4! Na4 15.Nxa4 bxa4 16.c4!, White will capture the a4-pawn and got a crushing attack and 2 pawns for the bishop. More than sufficient!
