Sprint classic qualifications |Cross-country skiing | PyeongChang2018 Paralympic Winter Games

01:54:12
Cristian Ribera may be only 15 years old but he has already written his name into the history books. PyeongChang 2018´s youngest Paralympian achieved Brazil´s best result ever at a Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games after finishing sixth in the men´s cross-country long distance sitting, where the minimum age to compete is 15. This is even more remarkable taking into account that Brazil does not have ski centres due to the country´s predominantly warm climate and winter athletes have to train on rollers in the streets. “It is very important for me to be the youngest Paralympian at this Games, but what I really wanted when I came here was to do well and surprise everyone. This is so gratifying." “I feel so honoured for having made history for my country, it is an inexplicable feeling,” said Ribera, who clocked 46:35.2. More surprisingly, this is the first top competition he takes part in and he finished ahead of big names such as Ukraine´s Taras Rad and USA´s Andrew Soule. “It was a good event, I managed to have good rhythm throughout. Despite not reaching the top five, I met my goal of ending among the top 10. It was very tough and did not imagine something like this at only 15 years old. “It is very important for me to be the youngest Paralympian at this Games, but what I really wanted when I came here was to do well and surprise everyone. This is so gratifying. “All athletes dream with competing at a Paralympic Games. But I had never thought of doing it so early in my career and life. Of course now that I came I was looking to have good results.” Ribera used to practice swimming and athletics, but switched to Nordic skiing after taking part in a workshop in Brazil organised by the Agitos Foundation, the development arm of the International Paralympic Committee (IPC), and the Snow Sports Brazilian Confederation in 2015. This training camp aimed to look for potential winter Para athletes. “I liked it very much since the beginning and have been training ever since in order to one day claim a Paralympic medal,” he said. “We train on rollers because there is no snow in Brazil. That allows us to run in the streets. We work the technique a lot, but of course the transition to running on the snow is not easy. It is quite different. “We train on snow once per year in Europe. We would like to go to Argentina or Chile but it is not so wheelchair-friendly.” Ribera knows there is a lot he can still learn and is looking into the future with excitement. “I want to train more and develop myself as an athlete. I know this experience in PyeongChang will serve as a learning for my whole life.” Tickets for PyeongChang 2018 can be purchased here.

What is para-cross-country skiing at the Paralympic Games?

02:41
Cross-country skiing first appeared at the 1976 Paralympic Winter Games in Örnsköldsvik, Sweden. The competition is open to athletes with a physical impairment and blindness/visual impairment. Depending on functional impairment, a competitor may use a sit-ski, a chair equipped with a pair of skis. Athletes with blindness/visual impairment compete in the event with a sighted guide. Male and female athletes compete in short distance, middle distance and long distance (ranging from 2.5km to 20km) or participate in a team relay using classical or free techniques. Cross-country Skiing is governed by the IPC with co-ordination by the IPC Nordic Skiing Technical Committee following modified rules of the International Ski Federation (FIS) and is practiced by athletes in 24 countries. Sports Equipment Sit-Ski: Some athletes with a physical disability compete from a sitting position using a sit-ski, also called a mono-ski. As the name suggests, mono-skis have a specially fitted chair over a single ski. The chair includes seat belts and other strapping, as well as a suspension device to minimize wear and tear on the skier's body. Ski: Made from fiberglass, classical skis are usually 25cm to 30cm taller than the height of a skier. They are light, weighing less than 0.45kg each; and narrow, with curved tips and a cambered midsection, which is thicker and arched. Free technique skis are about 10cm to 15cm shorter for greater maneuvering. They are also nominally stiffer and have tips that curve less than classical technique skis. The underside of both types of skis has a groove down the center to keep the ski straight when going downhill.

Men's 15km cross-country skiing sitting | Sochi 2014 Paralympic Winter Games

01:29:38
Ukraine won their first cross-country gold medal of the Sochi 2014 Paralympic Winter Games through Lyudmyla Pavlenko in the women's 12km sitting cross-country skiing race on Sunday (9 March). Pavlenko led throughout the entire course and finished in a time of 38:54.3 followed by the USA's Oksana Masters. Masters, who won a bronze medal in rowing at the London 2012 Summer Games, was thrilled with her silver medal-winning performance considering she is new to cross-country skiing. "I am ecstatic," Masters said. "The course for me was tricky because I am a fairly new skier still and the course had some tight turns. So I just tried to stay calm and relax on the turns and then just hammer home." Even though she said the course was difficult in parts, Masters still managed to hold second spot for the duration of the race and completed the course in 39:16.0, which was 22 seconds behind the race winner Pavlenko. Russia's Svetlana Konovalova added a bronze medal to the silver she claimed on Day 1 in the women's 6km sitting biathlon. The 24-year-old remained strong in third place as she crossed the line 10 seconds ahead of Norway's Mariann Marthinsen in 39:49.8 Tatyana McFadden, winner of six IPC Athletics World Championship gold medals last year in Lyon, France, finished in fifth place in her Paralympic Winter Games debut. The 24-year-old, a Russian adoptee, enjoyed the conditions of her first skiing race and said it was great to have the support of all her family from both countries. "It was perfect," McFadden said. "The snow conditions were right up my alley. It was a great day of skiing and the 12km is hard, especially for someone who is new. I've been skiing less than a year so I just had to ski with my heart today and having my family in the stands was absolutely wonderful." Andrea Eskau, who won gold in the women's 6km sitting biathlon on day one, did not finish the race due to problems with her asthma. Earlier in the day, Russia secured a sweep on the podium in the men's 15km sitting race. Roman Petushkov collected his second gold medal of the games with his teammates Irek Zaripov and Aleksandr Davidovich collecting silver and bronze. "I want to thank my whole team. We did this together," said Petushkov Like on Day 1, Petushkov stormed ahead as he led his Russian compatriots by 20 seconds at the 3km stage. He was fully in control by the 9km stage after he opened up a 60-second gap to allow him to stroll across the line in 40:51.6. Zaripov battled through the last 4km beat Davidovich to the silver medal, finishing in 41:55.1 with Davidovich following in 42:08.6 to complete a sweep of the podium for the Russian men. Ukraine's silver medallist in the men's 7.5km biathlon, Maksym Yarovyi, finished 0.2 seconds behind in fourth but Japan's Kozo Kubo, a regular podium finisher this year, struggled to cope with the demands of the course. He finished in 14th place. A big talking point of the race was also Brazil's first-ever Winter Paralympian. Fernando Rocha was the 15th man to finish but he said it was a great honour to be the first winter athlete to compete for his country. "When I reached the finish line I was so proud. The first one from Brazil to finish a race at a winter games," Rocha said of his achievement. "This is to show everyone the journey I had. I've only been in this sport for about one year and six months and there is not a lot of snow in Brazil. I am just so proud to be the first person from Brazil to represent my country in a Paralympic Winter Games."

Qualification: Men's / women's 1km sprint freestyle | Cross-country skiing | Sochi 2014 Paralympics

01:53:24
American wheelchair racing star Tatyana McFadden collected her first-ever medal at a Paralympic Winter Games, as the 24-year-old finished with silver in the women's 1km sitting sprint in Sochi on Wednesday (12 March). McFadden, who also has 10 Summer Paralympic medals to her name from wheelchair racing, pushed strong to the finish line for gold but was edged out by Norway's Mariann Marthinsen by 0.1 seconds. It was a mirror image of the form she produced to complete a marathon Grand Slam and win six IPC Athletics World title in 2013, and McFadden said it felt like a long-distance race. "It's been like a marathon," she said. "I was really nervous and it's been a really long day. You had to go through several rounds and I just had to concentrate on making the final. I knew it was going to be extremely tough so I did not expect to medal. From that start line I just had to give it 110 per cent." Marthinsen claimed gold in a time of 2:45.6 with McFadden following and Russia's Marta Zaynullina winning bronze in 2:46.6. In the men's 1km visually impaired sprint, Canada's Brian McKeever added to his impressive gold medal haul despite falling early in the race. The 34-year-old now has nine Winter Paralympic gold medals to attach to his 13 world titles as he crossed the finish line in 3:59.6 followed by Sweden's Zebastian Modin (4:01.4) and Russia's Oleg Ponomarev (4:05.0), who took silver and bronze, respectively. McKeever was tripped by his own guide Graham Nishikawa but they managed to regroup and push back into first-place position. "We didn't panic," said McKeever. "There was the instant F-bombs, but once we got up, we realised we were still in the race." Russia increased their lead at the top of the medals table with more dominant victories in cross-country skiing as they continued their medal monopoly on home snow in Sochi. Roman Petushkov earned his fourth gold medal of the Games with a powerful finish in the men's 1km sitting sprint. He went head-to-head with 19-year-old compatriot Grigory Murygin but Petsuhkov stormed ahead and across the finish line in 2:29.4. Murygin followed in 2:30.6 with Ukraine's Maksym Yarovyi ruining the chances of another podium sweep as he beat Irek Zaripov in a time of 2:31.6. Sweden's world champion Helene Ripa failed to qualify for the semi-finals of the women's 1km standing sprint, as she finished 15th in qualifying. In the final, Russia's Anna Milenina was crowned the Paralympic champion with a time of 4:26.9. Ukraine's Iluliia Batenkova finished five seconds later in 4:31.4 and Russia's Alena Kaufman claimed bronze in 4:31.7. In the women's 1km visually impaired sprint, Mikhalina Lysova and Elena Remizova completed a Russian one-two with six seconds between the pair. Lysova finished in 4:11.5 with Rezimova crossing the line in 4:17.1. Ukraine's Oksana Shyshkova earned a bronze medal with a time of 4:24.6. It was an all-Russian final in the men's 1km standing sprint featuring Vladimir Kononov, Sergey Lapkin, Alexandsr Pronkov, Vladislav Lekomtcev, Rushan Minnegulov and long-distance Paralympic champion Kirill Mikhaylov. Mikhaylov upgraded from the sprint silver he won in this event four years ago in Vancouver as he won the race in 3:53.5 with Minnegulov (3:53.8) and Lekomtcev (3:54.6) finishing behind him. "I'm happy because this is a load off my mind," Mikhaylov said. "It was a Russian final and yes, it is hard to compete against my friends."

Science of the Winter Olympics - Cross-Country Skiing, Internal Athlete

05:07
The United States hasn't won an Olympic medal in cross-country skiing since 1976, but in 2010, several skiers hope to change that. If they're successful, you can be certain it's due to their incredible endurance--cross-country skiers are among the fittest athletes in the world. Deborah King, an associate professor in the Department of Exercise and Sports Sciences at Ithaca College and Joseph Francisco, president of the American Chemical Society, look at the biochemistry of human endurance. NBC Learn, the educational arm of NBC News, has teamed up with the National Science Foundation (NSF) to produce Science of the Olympic Winter Games, a 16-part video series that explores the science behind individual Olympic events, including Downhill and Aerial Skiing, Speed Skating and Figure Skating, Curling and Hockey, and Ski Jumping, Bobsledding and Snowboarding. This groundbreaking project between the NSF and NBC Learn uses the global spotlight of the Olympics to make science more accessible and more interesting to students by showing how science helps athletes fulfill the Olympic motto: Citius, Altius, Fortius--Swifter, Higher, Stronger. Guided by Erik Carleton, McKeever overcame a slow start to then dominate the final stages of the race and finish in a time of 52:37.1. Russia's Stanislav Chokhalev, who led until the 12km mark, took silver in his Paralympic debut (53:43.3) and Sweden's 19-year-old Zebastian Modin claimed bronze (56:34.9). "It's all about my own shape and knowing if I'm going to be half decent or a bag of wet towels," McKeever said. "You don't know that until you start racing and pushing. "I needed to save my energy for the second part of the race, especially since the Russians started so quickly. They were 15, 20 seconds ahead. "That was absolutely the best race I could have laid down thanks to these guys. I'm very proud of that one." Russia's 21-year-old Rushan Minnegulov (50:55.1) claimed his first-ever Paralympic gold in the men's 20km standing race to go along with his silver in the event from last year's IPC Nordic Skiing World Championships. "I was so excited about the atmosphere," Minnegulov said. "I want to dedicate the medal to Russia. And a big thank you goes out to my coaches and my family, who supported me." Finland's Ikka Tuomisto (51:31.5) picked up his second career Paralympic medal, claiming silver across 20km, while three-time world champion Vladislav Lekomtcev (51:44.6) took bronze. "My impression before the race was definitively that the Russians are the strongest at this race," Tumisto said. "But I knew I could be on the podium, if I had a good day." The host nation's Kirill Mikhaylov (56:31.6) finished a disappointing seventh after entering the event as the two-time defending Paralympic champion. In the women's 15km standing race, Sweden's Helena Ripa (49:49.2) surpassed Ukrainian favourite Iuliia Batenkova (49:53.1) over the second half of the course to take home the gold. Batenkova, who now holds six Paralympic silvers in Nordic skiing, is still without a Paralympic gold. Russia's three-time Paralympian Anna Milenina (51:27.3) took the bronze, while Belarus' Larysa Varona (51:46.9) just missed out on the medals. The host nation finished one-two in the women's 15km visually impaired, with five-time world champion Elena Remizova (49:10.2), guided by Natalia Yakimova, taking gold and Mikhalina Lysova (50:47.5), guided by Alexey Ivanov, capturing the silver. Belarus' Yadviha Skorabahataya (55:46.5) won her eighth cross-country skiing Paralympic medal, taking home the bronze.

Incredible Sportsmanship In The Cross Country Skiing - Torino 2006 Winter Olympics

Relive this incredible show of Olympic sportsmanship between the Canadian and Norwegian competitors in the cross-country skiing at the Torino 2006 Winter Olympic Games. Subscribe to the Olympic channel: http://bit.ly/1dn6AV5 The women's cross-country skiing team sprint competition at the Torino Games was thrilling for fans from start to finish. After an exciting race, it all came down to the final sprint where Sweden took first place, with Canada in second and Finland finishing third. Still, one of the most memorable moments happened during the race. When Sara Renner of Canada broke one of her poles in the cross-country skiing team sprint, Norwegian head coach Bjørnar Håkensmoen lent her one of his (albeit 12cm too long). This act of fair play and sportsmanship allowed Renner to help her team win silver, and dropped Norway out of the medals.
