2 fun new ways to learn English vocabulary
Learning a new language is difficult and boring. Every student learns differently, and it's important to find a study method that is right for YOU. I want to put the fun back into studying English with two methods that are fun and which make learning easier and quicker! In this lesson, I will teach you how to make connections between words in order to remember them more easily. I will also reveal my hidden poet talents, so you don't want to miss this one! http://www.engvid.com/2-fun-new-ways-to-learn-english-vocabulary/ TRANSCRIPT Yeah, that was fun. I'm looking forward to hearing that from you later. Hi. James from engVid. In this video what I would like to do is help you work on vocabulary. I want to make it fun, because when things are fun, you work harder and you learn more. And today's lesson, I'm going to teach you two ways to not only just remember vocabulary, but learn how to use vocabulary in a way that we use it, and you will really understand it, and... Heck, it's fun. You're just going to have fun doing it. I'm sure you will. All right? It's a little bit creative. So, let's go to the board. Simple lesson. Here we go. Two ways to have fun with language. Not just language, but vocabulary. Ways that you may not be studying in class, we're going to do here today. The first one I want to talk to you about is fill in the gap. Huh? "A gap" means a space, there's a space between something. So, here's my hands, in between my hands is a gap. Okay? You have a gap between your eyes. One eye, one eye, space. In this case, you see I've got this: "tree __________ chair". Now, fill in the gap doesn't mean just one word. It's a couple of ways you can do this. In this particular game, we're going to take two vocabulary words, "tree", and take another one, "chair", and they're kind of a little obvious to make it easy for you, but what I want you to do is one of two things. The first thing we can do is use x words. What I mean by that is you could say: "I want to use five words, and I want to go from 'tree' to 'chair'." Or: "I want to use three words from 'tree' to 'chair'" or two. Huh? Well, okay. How do I get from "tree"? Okay. "Tree", "cut". You cut the tree down, right? "Lumber". Lumber you make into wood you can use. Let's see. "Carpenter". Find a carpenter. "Craft". "Craft" means make. You're like: "What?" These... All these words... And then I can say: "Furniture". Okay? Okay, furniture. "Chair", so if I have a tree, I cut it down and make it into lumber, I take it to a carpenter, he crafts it into a chair. Five words from A to B. So, one game is tell yourself: "I want to go from five... One word to another word, and I want five words to get there." And you can challenge yourself; maybe go from three words. Right? Or make 10 words. You can use it to describe something. How many words you can use to describe a certain thing. Right? "I have this word, and I want to go to this word. How many words does it take me to get there?" What this does is it teaches you relationship between words, and that also can teach you nouns and verbs, and how they function together. Or, we say "syntax", right? So, start at A, say: "I want to use five words to get there." This is a great word to do with a friend. You can say: "Okay, we're going to do 'tree' and 'chair', you need to do five words that make sense to go from 'tree' to 'chair'", and put a clock on for five minutes. You go, and she goes, you write together and see what words you get. Compare, check them out. "Why did you choose this, and why does this word...? What does this word mean?" Right? So, now, you're not just writing words in a book and saying: "This word means this." You're: "What does it mean? How do I use it? How would other people use it? How would other people think?" Right? Yeah. See? That's fun by yourself or with a friend. Okay, listen, the second way to play this game is: How many words to the answer? What? Well, we can pick up two random words, two, like... I have "chair"... "Tree" and "chair", we could have put "chair" and "moon". Now the game gets a little bit more interesting. Right? "Chair" and "moon". How many words does it get me to go from "chair" to "moon"? Now, you might say: "That's impossible. They have nothing to do with each other." I could say, "Listen, the chair in my living room"-"living room" is a noun-"sits"-which is a verb-"close to the big bay window where I can see the moon at night." How many words did it take me to get from "chair" to "moon"? So, it's playing with words, being creative.

You might also be surprised to know that this vocabulary appears in movies a lot! I will teach you the card names, suits, and the names of some combinations to help you win! You will learn the meaning of "bluff", "royal flush", "full house", "poker face", "three of a kind", and more. So grab your best lucky charms, and get ready to play. Good luck! Take the quiz on this lesson at: http://www.engvid.com/vocabulary-expressions-for-poker-and-other-card-games/ TRANSCRIPT Oh, there we are. Hi there. Welcome to poker night with Ronnie. Do you know how to play poker? Maybe? Do you know how to play poker in English? I'm going to teach you. I know how to play poker. I am not very good at playing poker; I always seem to get really terrible cards, no fault of my own. Very skilled in the game, just bad luck. Luck of the draw is not with me. I'm going to put my old-school video camera away, and we're going to learn how to play some poker in English. So, the first thing that we need to know about poker is it's a game. Woo-hoo. It's become very, very, very popular online because you can get a lot of money. The way I learned to play poker was my father taught me, after many a grape soda, sitting around the kitchen table, betting matchsticks. So, welcome to my childhood. I learned how to play poker. What did you do? The most important thing is to learn the name of the cards in English. So, probably you know: A, K, Q, J, 10, and the numbers, but these actually have names. The "A" is the Ace. The "K" is the King. The "Q" is the Queen. The Jack is the "J". Then it goes from 10 all the way down to 2. There is no 1. Sometimes the ace can be used as a 1, but that's too complicated, and I'm not going to tell you my tricks. Well, you're going to lose anyway, so might as well. The other thing that we need to know is what to call the cards. So, these are suits. Not... Suit? Suit, suit, suits... Suits, they're called... I don't know why they're called suits, they're just suits. So, the suits means: Hearts, diamonds, clubs, and spades. Now, when I was a child, I had a very stupid brother. Still do. Mm-hmm. And for some reason, he said shovels. Okay? It's a spade, buddy; not a shovel. Get it right. Okay? So, hearts, diamonds, clubs, and spades are the proper names of these. So, now you know the vocabulary of the wor-... Of the cards. I'm going to teach you some verbs that you need. The first one probably you know, is a bluff. "Bluff" means you have a face... Oh, Lady Gaga go away. Mm-hmm. Poker Face. Do you know what that means? "Poker face" means you are expressionless. Usually you have a baseball hat, so people can't see your eyes. But a bluff is when you do not let your face show your cards or what you're doing. So, if you're betting money or matchsticks and you want to bluff, you're going to pretend that you have a fabtabulous hand. Now, "the hand" means what cards you have. So, I'm going to pretend that I have the highest cards ever, called a "royal flush". So I would not make expressions with my face, and I would bet a lot of money. I would be bluffing, because maybe I have really, really bad cards. I always have bad cards. So, "bluff" means to, like, lie and pretend you have really, really good cards. The most important word is "bet". "Bet" means you put in money that you're going to lose or win, depending. Before they even deal the cards-"deal the cards" means you give them to people- there's something called an "ante". An "ante", not your mother's sister, means a forced bet before the deal. So, if we were playing cards or playing poker, and I have lots of money, I would ante $100. I would never do that. And then everyone else that wants to play would have to put in, automatically, $100, even before we look at our cards. Scary. What happens is we have the first bet is called "open". So, it would be my turn, I could open, which means I would put in money; or if I did not want to, I could "check" or "pass". This means I don't want to play with money. I'm just like: "No. Enh, we'll see what happens." If I have a really, really, really terrible hand, which means my cards are not good, I would do what's called "folding" or "fold". I would say: "Fold." Fold means: "This is terrible, I'm out. I end the game. I'm no longer playing this." When you bet, you can "call", which means you match what the other person has bet. For example, if the person before me bet $10, I would call, and I also would put in $10. If I wanted to get more money from people, I would "raise the pot", which means I would put in my $10, and I would add more money. So, if I had a really good hand, I would say: "I call the 10, and I raise you 50." So the other people playing, if they wanted to stay in the game, would have to put in $50.

Teaching Vocabulary to Young Learners Through Brain-Based Teaching Strategies by Setenay Çelik
Having started with the point that children learn easily and forget quickly, I have been working a lot on how to teach vocabulary to young learners by improving their memory skills. If it comes to memory, it is well worth searching about the brain. Throughout my search, I have found out that as long as the teachers meet the needs of the young brains, it is easier for the learners to remember new vocabulary items. In this presentation I’m planning to share my findings and ten practical brain- based activities that I use in my classes and find really effective. Setenay is from Turkey and she has been teaching English for 8 years including 4 years of teaching when she was a university student. She holds a Masters Degree in English Language Teaching from Gazi University in Ankara, Turkey. Her particular areas of interest are teaching English to young learners and creating new, useful classroom materials and activities.

The Secret to Remembering Vocabulary
http://www.engvid.com/ OMG, there are too many English words to learn! Well, I can help. Watch this video to learn my own trick for remembering new words. In order to show you how this trick works, I will also teach you the following five words: hammered, creamed, bald, beard, and condo. After watching this video, remembering new words will be a piece of cake. Take the quiz here: http://www.engvid.com/the-secret-to-remembering-vocabulary/ Hello. My name is Emma, and in today's video, I will teach you a trick on how to remember vocabulary. So English has the largest vocabulary out of any language. I think it's close to 600,000 words in English. So how are you going to remember so much vocabulary? Well, when I was in China, I created a little trick -- and other people use this trick, too -- that really helped me to remember all the new words I was learning. So in this video, I will teach you this trick. So what you do -- I have a bunch of interesting pictures on the board -- is any time you come up across a new word and you're learning a new word, you need to make a picture in your head of this word. A good idea is to try to think of other words that sound like this word and imagine funny situations in your mind. So what do I mean by that? Well, let me show you. The first word I'm going to teach you today is "bald", "bald", b-a-l-d. What does it mean to be "bald"? It means to have no hair, okay? So if you have no hair, you are "bald". How do you remember this word? Well, if you use my trick, you can imagine a word that sounds like "bald" -- maybe "ball", basketball, soccer ball. So in your mind, I want you to imagine a ball. It can be a basketball, a soccer ball -- any type of ball. Now, imagine the ball with a face. Imagine the ball with no hair on top, maybe a little hair on the side, a little hair here, but no hair on the top. Because "ball" and "bald" sound alike, if you imagine this picture for maybe ten seconds, it will help you to remember it in the future, okay? Think "ball with no hair". Okay. Let's try our second word: "beard". What's a beard? It's the hair that comes off a man's chin -- usually, women don't have beards. So it's the hair that comes down like this. How are we going to remember this word? Well, imagine a man with a beard, and inside the beard is a bird, a little bird, tweet tweet! And what's it doing in the beard? Why, it's drinking beer. Okay? So this little picture is -- don't know if you can see that, but that is beer. So imagine a bird drinking beer. Those two words together -- beer. This isn't beer; this one is. Imagine "bird" and "beer". Together, if you put the words together, they make "beard". A bird drinking beer in a beard. Can you say that fast? "Bird drinking beer in a beard." So maybe, if you picture this for ten seconds, you will remember this word. Okay. Next word I want to teach you today: "creamed". So what does it mean to be "creamed"? "We creamed you guys." "You guys got creamed." It means someone lost a game very badly. If our team creamed your basketball team, your basketball team lost; our team won. So you don't want to be "creamed". If you get "creamed", it's bad. It means you lost, you lose. So how can you remember this? Well, imagine someone -- maybe somebody you don't like, somebody you play basketball against or some sport. Imagine throwing a bunch of ice cream and it hits their face -- because the keyword "cream", "ice cream". So if you can imagine ice cream on someone's face, it will help you to remember the word "creamed". So imagine that for ten seconds. So think "ice cream on face", "creamed".

Teaching Kids with Fruits Vocabulary Games
Teaching kids with fruits vocabulary games: Ideas and Methods! Teaching kids with fruits vocabulary games is a great and fun way to teach vocabulary: it allows you to cover all kinds of vocabulary including colours, Fruits, and Songs. What's also great about using fruit with kids is that their education becomes tangible. They can touch and feel the objects about which they are learning, AND they are likely to see these objects again and again, either in their homes or in the supermarkets, meaning there is a lot of opportunity for them to practice! Here are some fun ideas for fruits vocabulary games for kids: Snapple (aka Snap!) To start off, you should run through the names and colours of the fruits and write these on the board. Have a good selection of fruits like apples (red), pears (green), lemons (yellow), bananas (yellow), grapes (purple), get the kids to identify first with the real fruits, and maybe even eat them! Next, get the kids to draw up the game themselves, have them draw basic representations of the fruit on cards (make sure you have two cards for each fruit), and tell them to write the name and the colour of the fruit beneath it. You can draw up ideas for how they should draw the fruits if they are beginners, or show them examples to copy from. Make sure they colour in the fruit the relevant colour. They can copy spellings from the board if necessary. Finally, the game is simple. Each player has a set of cards, mixed, and places a card (in turn) at a time face up in the middle. The first person to spot a pair has to shout out the vocabulary and the colour of the fruit to win. They then win the cards in the middle, and the next round begins. You can make it harder and test their vocabulary further by getting them to only notice the pairs when they are the same colour, and not when they are the same fruit. For example, if they see a banana and a lemon together they should shout “Yellow!” and win the round. Apples and Pears (aka Pairs) Using the same material the kids made for the Snapple game, place all of the cards face down on the floor – and scramble them up. Next, have the kids take it in turns to turn over the cards, two each, in an attempt to find the pairs. Like Snapple you can also add in a round that is just for colours to test their colour vocabulary. Memory Mix (aka Memory Game) Memory Mix is a game that involves actual fruit. You can ask the kids to each bring in a piece of fruit from home or if you don't think this is appropriate it might be best to source the fruit yourself. It is best to use real fruit so that the children associate the vocabulary with real fruit rather than plastic representations, however, if plastic fruit is the only resource available to you this will be fine. Place a selection of each fruit, sometimes more than one of the fruits and just one of others on a tray, and show the kids the tray. You need to give them at least two minutes looking and analyzing the tray – they must not write anything down or make any notes. Next, cover the tray with a cloth, and without telling them beforehand, tell the kids to recount the following items on the tray: 1. How many [insert fruits name here] are there? - you can do this for all of the fruits on the tray. 2. How many yellow fruits are there? 3. How many fruits in total are there? Depending on their level, if they find this too difficult you can show them the tray again to allow them to increase their answers. If they find it too easy you can present them with a number of trays and have them recount the numbers of fruits on each individual tray.

How to improve your English with MUSIC and MOVIES!
You learn the most English if you're having fun doing it. So today, I'm going to teach you how to improve your English by watching movies and by listening to music! Many of you already listen to English music and watch shows and movies that are in English. I'm going to teach you some activities that will make you active with the language you hear. You'll also learn fun games you can play by yourself or with a friend that will help you learn vocabulary, expressions, and pronunciation. By learning English from movies and music, you'll also sound more like a native speaker. http://www.engvid.com/how-to-improve-your-english-with-music-and-movies/ TRANSCRIPT To be, or not to be - that is the... Hi. James from engVid. Just practicing my Shakespeare. Well, not really. I just wanted to show you acting. Acting, being an actor can be a good way to learn English. And today I want to show you two fun ways to practice English doing things you already love to do. Okay? So, let's go to the board. Mr. E is saying: "I sound like Madonna!" That's not here yet, but that'll be the second one, but today or right now this part of the lesson is about movies, acting. What we want you to do or what I want you to do is go find a movie you love in English. I'm sure there's... If you're watching me, I'm sure you've watched some English television program or movie. I mean, I'm speaking a lot of English so I know you're used to it. What I... What I want you to do is pretend you are an actor in a movie, and we're going to take a few steps to get there. So the first thing is: Pick a movie that you love watching, because some of you watch it again and again. Star Wars, yeah, yeah? Or Harry Potter, if that's still out there, or Bond, James Bond. Right? Any of those movies. Okay, so you pick your movie. The second thing I want you to do is go through the movie and watch the scenes you love the best when the actor says something like: "Punk, do you feel lucky, punk? Well, do ya?" And then pick a couple of those scenes. All right? The third thing I want you to do is go to this part, and it's i-m... It's www.imsdb.com. It's where you get scripts. Now, right now you're probably going: "What's a script?" Well, in music the words in the music are called lyrics. Okay? So when you're looking at the words in a song they're called the lyrics. But when you're looking at the words in a movie, it's from a script. And one actor has his part in a script, another actor has her part in a script. And these are the lines they say. This particular website has amazing amount... An amazing amount of movies with scripts, so you can go and find any of the latest ones, like of Jason Bourne, or I'm trying to think of something that came out. I don't know when you're going to see this, so just say Harry Potter, maybe Ironman. Okay? Go check it out, you'll see the scripts, you can go and look at it. The reason why I asked you up here is to pick out scenes is you can go to the scene on the script where it may say: "Car chase scene", "Gun scene", "Kissing scene", and you can look at it, and all of the words the actors say are there. Because I know sometimes you don't know what the actor is actually saying. Sometimes we have what's called relaxed speech. In relaxed speech, they might say: "What do you want?" and it comes out: "Whatda ya want?" And you're like: "What?" It's English. Now, we have a video on relaxed speech, you can go and check it out, and it will explain: "Whatda ya want?" and other ones. Okay? So, the lines that will be there, you might notice a big difference between what the actor says and what is actually written for what you should explain or you should understand. Okay? This is good, it's going to help you with your ears as well. There's a thing you can pick up from listening. Okay? So we want to look at the scripts and then listen. Now, watch the movie at your favourite part. So now you've got the script in your hand, you're going to watch that part. Read. Here's the funny thing, a lot of times people read when they're watching a movie, like they read the subtitles-you know the little words?-and they think: "My listening is good because I understand." No, you're reading, but it does help because it helps you put a picture, a word picture to the words you're hearing. And we're much better with pictures. Think of it this way: Have you ever walked up to someone and said: "I remember your name, but I don't remember your face." No, you don't do that. We always remember faces and we forget names. Those kind of words and sounds are hard to remember, but the picture we always keep.
English Vocabulary: Talking about WORK
Do you have a job? Do you know how to talk about it in English? In this vocabulary lesson, I will teach you some basic English words and expressions we use to talk about work. This lesson features vocabulary like "shift", "overtime", "get off", and common sentences such as, "I'm not getting enough hours", "I need to come in early", and "I need to stay late." Do not miss this essential lesson, and make sure to do the quiz at http://www.engvid.com/english-vocabulary-talking-about-work/ to review your new vocabulary! TRANSCRIPT Hey, everyone. I'm Alex. Thanks for clicking, and welcome to this vocabulary lesson on talking about work. In this lesson, we will learn some phrases that we use to talk about work with our friends, family, colleagues, etc. So, you will see some sentences, as well as some questions that you can use to talk about your job. So, let's start with some basic questions that people might ask about your work, your job. For example, the most basic one, if you have a job: "Where do you work?" Right? Where do you work? Do you work at Microsoft, maybe? Do you work at Google? Do you work somewhere else? And, this is a very common question, especially if you don't have, you know, like a set schedule where you work, you can say: "Hey. When do you start?" Right? If you ask a person: "When do you start? Do you start at 8 o'clock? 9 o'clock? 10 o'clock?" This might be a common question, you know, if you're wondering if you can have breakfast with someone or maybe lunch with someone, depending on if they work in the afternoon, if they work in the morning, etc. And obviously, you can also ask when a person finishes their job. "When do you finish?" Okay? Two other ways that we can ask when a person is finished are: "Hey. When are you off?" Okay? So, if you say: "When are you off?" you know, you're asking them: What time do you finish? Same with this: "When do you get off work?", "When do you get off work?", "When do you finish work?" All right? So, again, you can say: "When do you finish?", "When are you off?", "When do you get off work?" Now, some sentences that we can use. You can say: "Oh, I work day shift.", "I work afternoon shift." or "I work night shift." Now, a shift is basically the time... The period of time, the block of time of work that you do. So, if you work in a factory, usually factories, a lot of them are open 24 hours per day. They have some people who work in the daytime, some people work in the afternoon, some people work at nighttime. So you can say: "Oh, I'm on day shift.", "I am on afternoon shift.", "I am on night shift." Instead of saying, you know: "I work day shift, afternoon shift, night shift", you can also say: "I'm on days.", "I'm on afternoons.", "I'm on nights." And this can change, depending on how your schedule works. You can say: "I'm on afternoons this week, but next week I'm on days." And again, this is important information, depending on who you're talking to, if they want to get together with you for something, it's important to know. -"What shift are you on next week?" -"Next week I'm on nights, so that means that we can get together for dinner before I start work." Okay? Now, "overtime". "Overtime" is time that you work longer than you are expected to legally work. So, for example, in most companies... I'm just going to talk about the North American context. Typically, one week a person is expected to work in most jobs 40 hours per week. If you work beyond that, you can work overtime. Right? You work overtime. Or if you work eight hours per day, if you work more than eight hours per day, you work overtime. So a person, your friends, colleague, family member can ask you: "Hey. Are you doing overtime tonight?" Or: "Are you working overtime tonight?" And short form for overtime: you can also say "OT". "Are you doing OT tonight?" You can say: "Yeah, I'm staying OT." Or: "I'm staying for two hours of OT." for example. Okay, next: maybe a common sentence for you, maybe not; depends on who you are. So, for example, here I wrote: "Jackie called in sick last Friday." So if you are sick and you call your job to tell them: "I'm sick. I can't come today." you are calling in sick. So the phrase is "call in". Okay? You might... Your friend might also tell you: "Hey. Monday, you know, we're going to have a big party on Sunday night, so Monday you're going to be very tired. Just call in. Call in." Or: "Call in sick". Okay? I'm not recommending this, but it's something people do. Next: "I need a vacation." And if you want to say you have been working really hard, one expression you can use is: "I've been working like a dog." Okay? You think of a dog like [pants like a dog] like this, if you are working very hard, you can say: "I've been working like a dog."
