Are athletes really getting faster, better, stronger? | David Epstein

14:54
When you look at sporting achievements over the last decades, it seems like humans have gotten faster, better and stronger in nearly every way. Yet as David Epstein points out in this delightfully counter-intuitive talk, we might want to lay off the self-congratulation. Many factors are at play in shattering athletic records, and the development of our natural talents is just one of them. A Visual History of Sports

02:13
The first recorded sport in history was spear throwing, which arose in 70,000 BC out of a need for ancient hunters to practice their skills. Bowling was the first known ball game, appearing in Egypt in 3,200 BC; later, there was Pitz, played by the ancient Maya in 2,500 BC, followed by Episkyros, known as “common ball” to Greeks living in 8th century BC. Long before the Olympics, there were the Tailteann Games, which the ancient Irish held around 1,800 BC. At the first recorded Olympic Games in 760 BC, there was only one event: a footrace.

Promoting Interdisciplinary Research with Community Impact | Dr. Michael Burns | TEDxFargo

07:55
A professor's quest for tenure has created a publish or perish mentality that universities perpetuate, stifling research that could impact our communities. Dr. Michael Burns talks about a program called CoSearch, which solves community problems through interdisciplinary research, while still supporting the tenure clock. Through unlikely collaborations, professors can use their research to change the world and help our communities. Dr. Burns is an award-winning Senior Lecturer in the Department of Communication Studies and the Honors College at Texas State University. Dr. Burns' professional experiences outside of academia include working for NBC’s Today Show at the 2006 Torino, 2008 Beijing, 2012 London, and 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympic Games. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx

Individual players, coaches, even entire teams have been caught trying to up their advantage in one way or another. As the saying goes however, cheaters never prosper and at some point they are caught. At best they lose their standing or their metals. At worst, they are barred from participating at the Games for years or for life. Some wonder if the risk of being caught even makes the cheating worth it. Maybe they feel they will never be caught, that they can somehow slip under the radar and have their moment in the spotlight. In an event as big as the Olympics, there’s nowhere to hide and eventually the truth will out. In every professional sport there is an aspect of cheating. Whether disqualified for doping or discredited for bribing the judges, in the end cheaters never really win. Here are ten Olympic Games cheaters from over the years. USA vs USSR Fight! The Cold War: Crash Course World History #39

12:16
In which John Green teaches you about the Cold War, which was occasionally hot, but on average, it was just cool. In the sense of its temperature. It was by no means cool, man. After World War II, there were basically two big geopolitical powers left to divide up the world. And divide they did. The United States and the Soviet Union divvied up Europe in the aftermath of the war, and then proceeded to spend the next 45 years fighting over the rest of the world. It was the great ideological struggle, with the US on the side of capitalism and profit, and the USSR pushing Communism, so-called. While both sides presented themselves as the good guy in this situation, the reality is that there are no good guys. Both parties to the Cold War engaged in forcible regime changes, built up vast nuclear arsenals, and basically got up to dirty tricks. If you had to pick a bad guy though, I would point out that the USSR had no intention of bringing Laika the Cosmonaut Dog home alive. That poor dog never had a shot. The Olympics, FIFA, and why we love sports: Crash Course Games #17

12:02
Today, John Green is going to be your substitute teacher as we dive into the world of sports! Now “sports” is a pretty broad genre of game, we probably couldn’t even cover them in an entire series, but today we’re going to do our best to look at the origins of sports as they trace their histories back the Olympics (and even a little earlier), and look at how the rise of national pride and gaming communities has led us to the cultural behemoth of the FIFA World Cup. It’s a lot to cover, but we’re do our best to answer the big question for you non-sports-loving-gamers out there along the way: why do we love sports anyway? FILM DESCRIPTION: In this comedy, a cop assumes a new identity in his valiant battle against crime: an elderly grandmother! Malcolm Turner (Martin Lawrence) is an FBI agent who is a master of disguise and will stop at nothing to get his man. When a bank robber escapes from prison and goes on a violent crime spree, Malcolm is assigned to bring him in. The thief's girlfriend Sherry (Nia Long), who is also the mother of his child, lives in a small Southern town, and Malcolm plans to set up a stake-out in the house across the street from Sherry's. However, the house is owned by Big Momma (Ella Mitchell), an older woman with a sharp tongue and no patience for back talk, and when Big Momma has to leave town, it leaves her house suspiciously empty. Determined to maintain his cover, Malcolm disguises himself as Big Momma, and now has to convince Sherry (and everyone else in the neighborhood) that Big Momma's still in town. Big Momma's House gained considerable pre-production publicity when Lawrence fell into a coma while jogging in a heat wave before the film's start date; Lawrence claimed that he was trying to lose weight to fit more comfortably into his character's "fat suit." N Korea to send 22 athletes to PyeongChang 2018: IOC

01:33
북한 선수 22명 평창올림픽 참가…올림픽 첫 단일팀 확정 It's been confirmed at the International Olympic Committee that North Korea will be sending 22 athletes to compete in Pyeongchang. Representatives of the two Koreas met with IOC President Thomas Bach in Switzerland on Saturday and got final approval from the Olympic governing body. North Korea will send athletes to compete in figure skating, short track speed skating, cross country skiing and alpine skiing. But in a move that's caused some controversy, North Koreans will also compete in women's ice hockey... on a joint team with South Korea. In Saturday's talks, the parties agreed that South Korea will field 23 players for the hockey team and North Korea will add another 12. The team roster won't be expanded for each individual game, but the coach will have to play at least three of the North Koreans each time. South Korea's culture minister has taken the IOC's decision to promote exchanges between the two Koreas as a positive sign. He spoke about the decision on Sunday to the press. Have a look. (Korean) "The IOC believes the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics should take place in an atmosphere that upholds the values of peace, understanding and dialogue. And to make this happen, the two Koreas have held talks during the last two days. The Olympics will be an important way to promote bilateral exchanges by the two Koreas' for their peaceful coexistence... and the prevention of military confrontation." In what was India’s first-ever official International Friendly on Chinese soil, a gritty India played a 0-0 draw against PR China at the Suzhou Olympic Sports Centre Stadium. The Blue Tigers, ranked 97 in the world in FIFA rankings held firm against their 76th-ranked opponents, defending with strength and heart. Do you believe that people should be judged by their character, not their skin color? Do you believe in freedom of religion? If you believe these things, you’re probably not a progressive. You might think you’re a progressive. I used to think I was. My show, “The Rubin Report,” was originally part of the progressive “Young Turks” network. Progressives struck me as liberals, but louder. Progressives were the nice guys; they looked out for the little guy; they cared about women and minorities; they embraced change. In short, who wouldn’t want to be a progressive? But over the last couple years, the meaning of the word “progressive” has changed. Progressives used to say, “I may disagree with what you say, but I will fight to the death for your right to say it.” Not anymore. Banning speakers whose opinions you don’t agree with from college campuses – that’s not progressive. Prohibiting any words not approved of as “politically correct” – that’s not progressive. Putting “Trigger Warnings” on books, movies, music, anything that might offend people – that’s not progressive either. All of this has led me to be believe that much of the left is no longer progressive, but regressive. This is one of the reasons I’ve spent so much time on my show talking about The Regressive Left. This regressive ideology doesn’t judge people as individuals, but as a collective. If you’re black, or female, or Muslim, or Hispanic, or a member of any other minority group, you’re judged differently than the most evil of all things: a white, Christian male. The Regressive Left ranks minority groups in a pecking order to compete in a kind of “Oppression Olympics”. Gold medal goes to the most offended. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s dream that his children would be judged by their character and not their skin color was a liberal idea, but these days, it’s not a progressive ideal. And what about religious freedom - the idea that no one else can tell you what you have to believe? Surely progressives still support that basic right. Well, not so much. I’m a married gay man, so you might think that I appreciate the government forcing a Christian baker or photographer or florist to act against their religion in order to cater, photograph or decorate my wedding. But you’d be wrong. A government that can force Christians to violate their conscience can force me to violate mine. If a baker won’t bake you a cake, find another baker; don’t demand that the state tell him what to do with his private business. I’m pro-choice. But a government that can force a group of Catholic nuns - literally called the Little Sisters of the Poor - to violate their faith and pay for abortion-inducing birth control can force anyone to do anything. That’s not progressive; that’s regressive! Today's progressivism has become a faux-moral movement, hurling charges of racism, bigotry, xenophobia, homophobia, Islamophobia and a slew of other meaningless buzzwords at anyone they disagree with. The battle of ideas has been replaced by a battle of feelings, and outrage has replaced honesty. Diversity reigns supreme – as long as it’s not that pesky diversity of thought. This isn’t the recipe for a free society, it’s a recipe for authoritarianism. For the complete script, visit https://www.prageru.com/videos/why-i-left-left

Wrestling gets reinstated for 2020 Olympics, defeating baseball-softball and squash

01:33
Seven months after losing its Olympic status, wrestling was reinstated for the 2020 Games on Sunday when the IOC (International Olympic Committee) overturned a decision many members thought was a mistake. The sport, which has ancient roots in the Olympics, easily defeated bids from baseball-softball and squash. It will now join the programme of the 2020 Games, which were awarded to Tokyo on Saturday. Wrestling, which was surprisingly dropped from the list of core sports in February, received 49 votes to win in the first round of secret balloting by the International Olympic Committee. Baseball-softball got 24 votes and squash 22. The decision capped a frantic six-month campaign by the wrestling body FILA (International Federation of Associated Wrestling Styles) to revamp the organisation and reshape the sport to save its Olympic status. "Ecstatic, I'm so happy. I couldn't help but jump up and down for joy, tears of joy in my eyes. I'm very relieved," said Canadian wrestler and member of the Wrestling delegation Carol Nyunh. The vote followed final presentations by all three sports, with FILA President Nenad Lalovic promising the delegates that wrestling had learned its lesson. Wrestling goes back to the ancient Olympics in Greece and has been on the programme of every modern games except 1900. The sport was caught off guard when it was axed by the IOC executive board - a decision that surprised even most IOC members. "Wrestling is not a new sport but the wrestling we are presenting now is a new wrestling," Lalovic said in news conference after the vote. Lalovic had earlier admitted to IOC members that mistakes had been made. Dick Pound, Canadian IOC member, agreed with Lalovic's sentiments. "They've (International Federation of Associated Wrestling Styles) spent a lot of time and energy, emotion and otherwise in a process that was pretty well doomed. This doesn't happen in the IOC very often but that vote was to say that the executive board 'you made a mess of this, and we're going to fix the mess and now we've got to figure out another way to go forward," he added. Squash was trying to earn a spot in the Olympics for the third time. Men's baseball and women's softball merged into a single federation to try to return after being dropped for the 2012 and 2016 Games. Don Porter, the American co-president of the World Baseball Softball Confederation, became emotional as he talked about receiving letters from youngsters who were distraught when softball was dropped. "Start going back and just thinking of all the letters you know the kids, the parents and others all over the world. And I feel I've let (begins to cry), I've let them down. Sorry," Porter said. Each sport had 20 minutes to make its case to the IOC. Visualizing Olympic Medals with F# and Fable

58:07
What if you could look at the source code behind any online visualization, check what data sources it uses, reproduce the results and modify any of its parameters? In this talk, I will present a data visualization project that I created around the Olympic games (http://rio2016.thegamma.net) which visualizes interesting facts about Olympic medals, but more importantly - lets you modify existing visualizations, interactively explore the data on your own and share your insights. Along the way, you will learn about building functional client-side web applications with F# and Fable – the F# to JavaScript compiler for 21st century. I will discuss how type providers change how we think about data, how functional types save the day and let you model complex domain (of data transformations) with a few lines of code and how immutability and functional programming make it easier to build interactive web applications (and what nice patterns can we learn from Elm) ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Speaker: Tomas Petricek He is a computer scientist and open-source developer. He is a Visiting Researcher at the Alan Turing Institute working on tools for open data-driven storytelling. He is an active F# contributor, developer of several F# open-source libraries and wrote a popular book called "Real-World Functional Programming". He is a partner at fsharpWorks (http://fsharpworks.com) where he provides trainings and consulting services. Tomas recently submitted his PhD thesis at the University of Cambridge focused on context-aware programming, but his most recent writings also includes two essays try to understand programming through the perspective of philosophy of science.
South Korea praised for hosting successful PyeongChang Winter Olympics

03:18
17일간의 여정 마무리하는 평창동계올림픽, 관중들 성공 개최한 한국에게 박수 From North Korea's participation to the extreme weather conditions. Amid the various issues and concerns that arose before and during the PyeongChang Winter Olympics, the 17-day-long sporting event concluded on Sunday, and the overwhelming majority of visitors and spectators say the event was a success. Lee Ji-won takes a look back at the highs and the lows of the Games. From tears of joy, sighs of disappointment to exhilarating excitement. The past 17 days of the PyeongChang Winter Olympics were packed with incident and raw emotions. Now that the event is over, many are looking back at their February in South Korea's alpine town of Pyeongchang and the sub-host city of Gangneung. Many commented on how it was a huge success. "I have been to 16 Olympics, winter and summer, and I thought this was one of the best ones I've been to in terms of organization, logistics, the quality of the infrastructure. You want to be as easy as possible to move around and to enjoy the games." The friendliness of the locals and volunteers was also praised. "We've been really impressed by how nice all the locals have been to us, especially patient, because we don't speak any Korean, and even with the very wide language barrier everyone's been really accommodating." Of the many highlights was North Korea's participation in the Games. While the decision and process was initially controversial, people say these exchanges prove the Olympics is more than just a sporting event. "Not just bold, but I think it's sent a message to the world and there's really only one place that could do that and that is here in South Korea and here in Pyeongchang. A lot of people say that's politics hijacking the games, no actually, this is a not a story about politics, this is a story about people." The bone-chilling temperatures during the Games was a major concern and it caused a number of snow events to be postponed. But journalists who've covered numerous Winter Olympics say cold is not a problem for winter sports. "Olympics are so big, there are always going to be issues. In terms of the weather, it was very cold the first week, but in a way, this is the Winter Olympics, they are supposed to be cold." Visitors also suggested room for improvements. "I think they should've taught English to most of the work force because I don't speak Korean and as a foreigner it was hard for me to get information." "It wasn't that expensive to book a place to stay, but I came here to watch numerous events on different days... and there weren't many vacancies." With the general consensus that the PyeongChang Olympics were a success, many visitors said one of the best legacies of the Games is that South Korea "took a step forward in presenting itself" to the world and the world got to know Korea better as well. В.Путин.Вступительное слово.05.03.02

07:50
Opening Remarks at a Meeting with the Members of the Russian Olympic Team March 5, 2002 Novo-Ogaryovo Вступительное слово на встрече с членами олимпийской сборной России 5 марта 2002 года Ново-Огарево VLADIMIR PUTIN: Good afternoon. I am glad to welcome you and to congratulate you on the conclusion of the 19th Olympic Games. I am well aware that there has been, both over there and here, a lot of bickering over what was happening at the Games. We were eagerly supporting you. Perhaps we were sometimes unduly emotional, but it just goes to prove how popular sport is in our country and how popular the people are who score outstanding achievements in sports. It is added proof that the overwhelming majority of people in our country see your achievements as their own. That is very important, that speaks volumes. On the whole, in spite of all the emotions, one can say that our team has made a fairly good performance. If the State Council, which met on the eve of the Games, had not set the bar unreasonably high, we might be feeling now that all our expectations have come true. Before the Olympic Games our sports officials told me that we had no particular hopes, but we would certainly win seven or eight medals. We fell only a little short of that target. But most importantly, we have seen talented performances and, still more important, we have seen a great commitment to winning that pushed human potential almost to the limit. Sixteen medals, including six gold medals, is not bad at all. And this in spite of the tough competition and the psychological pressure that we have come across. In spite of this, you have been able to win and confirm that we have good potential and good prospects. We are capable of remaining in the lead in many sports.I would like to thank all the Olympic athletes, those who won the trophies for us and those who have, on this occasion, been down on their luck. We will continue to analyse the results of the last Olympics, the first Olympics in the 21st century, for some time yet. But many conclusions can and must be drawn immediately. The first thing I would like to note is that the Games at Salt Lake City have shown that modern Olympics are not only an international athletic highlight. It involves the interests of business and huge PR resources. The success of athletes at the Olympic Games increasingly depends not only on the athletes themselves or the talent of their coaches. It depends on the competence of the lawyers, psychologists and physicians. So, an important duty of the heads and managers of our team is to provide competent legal, medical and informational support of these competitions. Sport is, by its very nature, all about open, equal and fair competition. Rivals cannot be allowed to win by resorting to unsportsmanlike methods. And we thought that at the last Games that was a somewhat neglected aspect and we will talk about it later. If we want our athletes to win, we must provide everything that is necessary in advance: organisation, the material grounds and prerequisites.I believe that these issues should be once again thoroughly analysed by our sports establishment, including by the Olympic Committee of Russia, by the Government and other organisations concerned. By the way, these organisations could do with a bit more organisation. I was surprised to hear Leonid [Tyagachov] lament at the last moment that our women skiers were not entered in the competition and also that our organisers and officials were not on the ground: that is, if they had been on the spot perhaps it wouldnt have happened. And it immediately struck me: and where were you? Why werent you there? But that is a separate question.

Women in Sport Lesson 79 - Learn English via Listening English Level 3

Women in Sport Lesson 79 - Learn English via Listening English Level 3 The struggle to attain equality for female participation in sport has been a long and hard-fought one. One hundred years ago, a majority of people-many women included-would have thought it unnatural, if not immoral, to permit women to participate in sports. Today, women's participation is widespread and accepted by most. However, there are still many sports and sport-related institutions and organizations that have not achieved full equality. Some sports, such as football or boxing, encourage very little female participation, although even these so-called "masculine" sports are changing. Women's boxing, for example, will probably be included in the Olympic Games by the end of this decade. In the late 1800s and early 1900s, when sports and physical education programs were first organized in North America, women were forbidden from participating for so-called "scientific" or "medical" reasons. Physicians as a group often spoke out against female athleticism, using the argument that physical activity would damage reproduction. Others claimed that it was quite simply "unnatural" for women to participate in sports. Little real evidence was provided to support these claims. In truth, the so-called "evidence" was more a reflection of physicians' cultural assumptions about women's place in society in general. The 1920s and 1930s witnessed a short "Golden Age" in women's sports. Individual athletes and teams or leagues formed to support female athletics. Track and field, tennis, softball, programs in physical education, and other activities were encouraged, at least for those women lucky enough to have the time and money to participate. There was even a Women's Olympic Games movement in the 1920s and 1930s. At one point, the regular Olympic Games organized by the International Olympic Committee (IOC), became concerned that the Women's Olympics would gain enough power to challenge the superiority of the IOC's Olympics. As a result, the IOC included a few more women's events in their Games, although not many. The Golden Age of women's sports was followed by a long drought. The post-World War II era was one of very conservative traditional family values in North America. However, in the 1970s the current boom in women's sport began. One of the driving forces in the movement was East Bloc countries, particularly the Soviet Union and East Germany, both of which encouraged female athletes at the highest level-the Olympic Games. Female athletes with strong and muscular bodies emerged on the international sports stage. At first, this raised concern among the male-dominated sports establishment. However, after years of struggle, the muscular and strong female athletic body has become common in international sport. In the late-nineteenth century, the founder of the modern Olympic Games, Pierre de Coubertin, said that the sight of women participating in sport was an affront to the human eye, and unnatural. We've come a long way since then. ☞ Thanks for watching in Channel Learn Speaking English Fluently Basic! ☞ Please share and like if you enjoyed the video :) thanks so much ♥ ─────────────────── ▶ Please subscribe to update new videos.
