TechZone ► https://goo.gl/Gj3wZs Do you wanna talk about education? No, no, don't worry, we're not gonna ask you how you're doing at school or whether you cleaned the dishes after dinner. It's much more interesting to look at the education systems around the world, because in every country children are treated differently. This depends on mentality, lifestyle and even the weather of each country. But how different is education, for example, in Mexico and in the US? Let's figure it out. Let's ge... Oh, wait. First, a small disclaimer: all the information in this video is taken from open sources, all approaches to the education are individual, so don't blame us if you and your family do something different. Why Do American Schools Have Such Long Hours?

05:11
The structure of America’s school calendar may seem counterintuitive—and in many ways, it is. In this episode of School Myths by The Atlantic, we investigate some pressing questions, such as why American students have long summer breaks between school years and yet such short gaps between each class.

School Lunches You've Probably Never Heard About

08:14
Here’s what school lunches around the world look like. Meals for kids in different countries are truly amazing and surprising! Every country has its standards for school meals. Some schools offer convenience food and snacks for lunch, and some cook set meals for students. What do you think the most popular ingredients of school lunches are? Well, how about octopus, kimchi, or chili? Are you curious what kids eat in South Korea? What they prefer in Turkey? Some of those lunches are quite unusual. Watch and try to find your childhood meals! TIMESTAMPS South Korea 0:41 Japan 1:23 Turkey 1:55 Thailand 2:28 France 2:59 Finland 3:28 Russia 4:08 Hungary 4:34 Israel 4:53 Colombia 5:25 Italy 5:55 Australia 6:37 Chile 7:11 SUMMARY - The system of planning school meals in South Korea is one of the best in the world. Lunches are served on special trays. The two biggest sections of the tray are usually for soup and rice. Smaller sections are for salads, seafood, veggies, and fruit. - Japanese school lunches are almost the same as the South Korean ones: hot soup, rice, poultry or fish, salad, and milk. Students are not allowed to bring their food with them until they reach high school. - It's interesting that, though children in Turkey have 1 hour for lunch, cafeterias are rare in this country. So students either go home for lunch (which might be hard to do if you live on the other side of the town!) or take food from home. - Students in Thailand don't eat in the canteen, just like their "colleagues" from Japan. They are usually given soup, pork in sweet and sour sauce, rice, and a pudding wrapped in banana leaves. - Typical lunch served in the west of France looks very healthy. It is fish, spinach, potatoes, cheese, and bread. It is quite big as the French consider lunch the main meal of the day. - Finland takes school lunches very seriously. Every student is offered snacks during the morning and evening classes, as well as lunch. Children eat their lunches in a canteen where they can choose whatever they want from a large variety of dishes. - In Russia, students can have free breakfast from 9 a.m. till 12 p.m. Lunches after 12 p.m. are paid. Children sometimes have lunch at home if they live near the school. If it is a school lunch, it is usually soup, fish or meat with a side dish of rice or buckwheat, and compote. - Hungary is famous for its big portions in restaurants and cafes. Same goes for school lunches. Children have several courses, with, for example, noodle soup, baked beans with chicken, and nuts for dessert. - Israel schools have the policy of a healthy diet. The government banned fatty and sugary things from school lunches. But the thing is that children mostly bring their meals from home. - 60-70% of children in Colombia are given free nutritious lunches. Students of state schools eat one hot meal a day. Their typical meal consists of soup, rice or pasta, salad, meat, and fruit juice. - Before lunch, in the morning, children get snacks (crackers, breadsticks, fresh fruit, or homemade cookies). For lunch they get two courses: a first course is often pasta or rice with seafood or vegetables, a second course - fish, meat, or cheese. - Authorities in Australia fight against children's obesity. That's why products rich in sugar, salt, and fat are forced out of school menu. But you can find their healthier replacements such as sandwiches, sushi, corn and fruit available at any time. - Students in Chile have nice and varied lunches. An example can be a meal with rice, beef roll, French fries, salad, avocado, orange juice, and fruit in the sauce for dessert. 10 Most Insane School Rules In South Korea

10:04
10 Most Insane School Rules In South Korea ► Subscribe: https://goo.gl/vHN6qB For copyright matters please contact us at: miniminter1992.29@gmail.com Most schools have the usual rules such as being dressed, showing up on time, and being quiet in the classroom. Usual school days are usually Monday through Friday, 8 hours a day. School break is during the summer and we all get a few months off to enjoy the sun and take a nice vacation. But things are not the same when it comes to other countries, and we found some strange rules in South Korea which might make you happy you don’t live there. Before we jump into the video, make sure you are subscribed and turn on notifications so you will be the first to know when we release a new video. Now check out these 10 strange school rules in South Korea. No Shoes - You probably know about the Asian tradition of taking off your shoes before entering a home. Well, the shoe etiquette goes beyond the house and into the classroom when it comes to students in South Korea. Strange Bathroom Rules - Like all the other schools in the world, to go to the toilet, you just have to ask for a pass to leave the classroom. And in many countries, the school supplies all the stuff like paper towels or toilet paper. But South Korea has a different system. School Uniform – The majority of secondary students in South Korea have to wear a uniform called a ‘gyobok’. From the start of middle school and up the uniform is strictly monitored and students must wear one. The uniform usually consists of a shirt, blazer, and tie, with skirts for girls and long trousers for boys. In addition to uniforms being standard, students also have standards for which they must wear their hair. The Five Year Teacher-Principal Rotation Cycle– Teachers in South Korea don’t end up staying at the same school as most teachers in other schools and universities in places like the United States for instance. After each five-year term at the school, everyone including the teachers, the vice-principal, and even the principal of the school go through a lottery-type system and have to change schools. Take Out The Trash – Most public buildings including schools in different parts of the world have their own staff to keep them clean. The only thing that students have to worry about is their studies. However, If you’re a student in South Korea, then you get to clean up the school yourself. Extra Lessons – When it comes to international tests, South Korea has some of the highest achievers. This is probably due to those 12+-hour Saturdays and other long days of study. For many students, a double-shift of school every weekday is a normal thing. Students attend classes from 7:30 AM, and then it’s lunchtime at 1:00 PM. At 5:00 PM school ends and self-study or special classes begin. At 7:00 pm there is dinner at school for one hour and at 8:00 PM self-study continues. Sleeping in class – One needs to wonder if it’s actually allowed to sleep during classes in South Korea. A survey was conducted that found one-third of students in South Korea sleep during class. In fact, it’s a normal thing to see 10-30 students passed out on their desks, and some fast asleep. No Homecoming Events – In U.S. High Schools, there is a dance at the end of the high school year called a promenade dance or as it’s sometimes called, ‘homecoming’ where students get dressed up nice, get a date and head to what many say is one of the most important and memorable time of the end of your high school year. Punishment – Every school has some type of punishment system for not doing what you’re supposed to be doing, or when certain people such as troublemakers or bullies need to have some discipline. A lot of different things can happen such as ending up in detention or worse, having to stay after school and write 1000 times Limited vacation – In most schools around the world, there is no school during the summer for many reasons. Some of those include the fact that it’s way too hot to sit in a classroom and do schoolwork, and who wants to be stuck inside during beautiful summer days when there are better things to do such as play on a beach or hang out with friends. And it’s usually the time when families take vacations. How to Make a Country Rich

Rather than ask this of any specific country, let’s imagine designing a country from scratch. How could you make it as rich as possible? Suppose the brief was to design ‘Richland’: an ideal wealth-creating society. What would be the chief characteristics you’d need to build into this society? A Japanese Method to Develop Creativity in Kids

09:17
Subscribe to Bright Side : https://goo.gl/rQTJZz For copyright matters please contact us at: welcome@brightside.me ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Japanese people are known for their intelligence, politeness, and wellness. Why is this nation so unique and different from the rest of the world? It seems we’ve found the answer – they have an incredibly cool education system and unique teaching methods! Watch till the end – there is a small but brilliant bonus for you. Let’s start with a unique Japanese method in the schools for developing creativity in kids. We believe that the whole world needs to adopt! It’s called “Nameless paints.” Japanese designers named Yusuke Imai and Ayami Moteki created an unusual set to teach kids colors and painting. This fantastic set won the 2012 Kokuyo Design Award. Let’s see how it works. “Nameless paints” includes ten tubes that don’t have color names such as “yellow,” “blue,” or “green.” Instead, there are only spots of a particular color or colors on each tube. As you can see, the spots are also different sizes. The designers’ aim is to change the way kids think and learn. They want children to understand what shade they will get if they mix certain colors. For instance, a child looks at the tube with two spots: pink and blue. He doesn’t know what color hides inside. He squeezes the tube and gets… purple color! So, as a result, the kid learns that the same amounts of pink and blue paints create purple. Here’s another example – a tube with a big blue spot and small pink one. It means if you mix a small amount of the pink color and a large amount of the blue color, you’ll get dark-blue color. Interesting, right? As you can see, each tube hides a particular color inside. Pink, yellow, blue, purple, red, dark green, dark blue, orange, light-green, and black. However, to get one of these shades, the child should think about which colors create it. As a result, they learn how to create new colors and how to mix them. It’s an easy and fun way to understand the color theory. Recent studies have shown that free thinking is an attribute that a person can acquire over time, and the schools play the most important part in developing creativity. Now, here’s the bonus – 10 brilliant features of the Japanese education system the whole world needs to adopt. The success of the Japanese culture is very simple: they put a lot of effort and time in the education system trying to make it not only useful but also fun. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Our Social Media: Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/brightside/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/brightgram/ 5-Minute Crafts Youtube: https://www.goo.gl/8JVmuC  ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- For more videos and articles visit: http://www.brightside.me/

Steps to Learning English: Where should you start?

18:54
So you want to learn or improve your English. But where should you start? When you learn a new language, there is so much material to cover: vocabulary, grammar, syntax, slang, pronunciation... With so many topics to study, you may not know where to focus your attention. In this video, I will give you some tips to organize your schedule and decide what you should work on. Whether you are a beginner, intermediate, or advanced speaker, you can always find something to improve on, and I will give you the tools you need to devise a good plan. Hint: it's more simple than you think! http://www.engvid.com/steps-to-learning-english-where-to-begin/ TRANSCRIPT [Singing] Hi. James. Greer. James Greer. From engVid. [Laughs]. Not Bond, and I know you think I was going to say Bond. I know. But listen, Bond always has an important mission he's got to do, right? 007. And so do I. Today we have a mission. We're going to learn how to study English. I know in many places, many websites, they tell you, and to teach you grammar and idioms and phrasal verbs. But then, there's the big question of you, and: How do you study, and how do you choose what is important for you at this moment? Maybe you're advanced. Maybe you're a beginner. Maybe you know this, and maybe you don't. After today's lesson and we do our mission, you'll know exactly what you have to do. Okay? So, we're going to go to the board in a second, and take a look. What steps should we take in order to learn? By the time you're done this video, you'll know exactly... Or you should know where you are, where you need to go, and when you're going to be done. Ready? Let's go. E. E is standing here saying: "Where do I start? Grammar, vocabulary, or speaking?" Common, and seems to make sense, I mean, you go to learn a language-right?-you go on a website, they start throwing things at you. You go to a school, they say you need this, this, and this. But you don't really know. So, I'm going to give you the tools to decide that. First thing we're going to do is: What's the first thing you need? Grammar? No. What? Conversation? No. Vocabulary. What? Well, look. If you can't say: "bathroom" when you go to a country, you're going to pee yourself. Okay? "Hungry", you won't get food. You don't need to know everything to get basic information done. And that's what we should look at first. Basic information for a beginner really is vocabulary. And instead of all the fancy stuff you need, you don't need much. You need you, and a little bit of time, and to have some fun. Why? I'm going to suggest: For basic communication, get vocabulary. I'm telling you right now if I see you or any English-speaking person sees you, and you see... You say: "Drink. Thirsty." There's no grammar, but they'll go: "Oh, the bar is over there." If you say: "Washroom. Please", they'll go: "Oh, toilet is over there." They use sentence, you use words. Sometimes you just touch your belly and go: "Ahh!" They'll go: "Oh, you want food." You don't need all that stuff. People will tell you you need to learn grammar, and this and that. You don't. And here's how you get your first vocabulary. Do what you love to do. Play video games. I've had... I don't know how many students play video games, say they learned how to fire, duck, words that we wouldn't teach them for a while, because they were playing games. Other people come in: "Dah-dah-dah-dah-dah, [sings]", singing. I go: -"What the hell?" -"I love to sing", and they sing a song, they sound like they're just, you know, from this country. Then they speak very terrible accent. You know what I'm saying, right? [Laughs] But when they sing, it's like the gods have come down. I mean, literally, you go: "Are you...? You were born here, right?" Cool slang. You know? YOLO, you only live once. Right? ASAP, as soon as possible. When you do these things, you're learning because you want to learn. You're not even realising you're learning, and it's going to make you want to learn more because... You know, we'll get to the second one and you'll understand. But you want to communicate in a much better way. Okay? So, get the meaning of basic words. "Hungry", "food", "toilet", "money". You know that one, right? You need those things. If you have those things, you can start your adventure in learning English. Okay? And you're going to do it by doing things you love. Video games, music, cool slang. Right? Come on. Now we're making language fun and easy for you, and that's what we should do, because you'll learn it faster. All right? And then here's the bad news: Hard work is on its way, so let's move over to the intermediate.

Why Some Countries Are Poor and Others Rich

Donald Trump is overseas visiting Belgium, England, Scotland and then his pal Putin in Russia. It is imperative that America has strong relationships with and knowledge about other nations, and that responsibility extends to all of us. So we came up with a test and went out on the street to ask people passing by, to name any country on a map. It didn't go well. Why Don't Country Flags Use The Color Purple?

03:27
For centuries purple dye was worth more than gold. The dye used to produce purple fabric came from a sea snail that only lived off the shores of modern day Lebanon. Because it was so rare, purple became associated with royalty. This is the reason you don't see purple on country flags. It was just too expensive to produce. Sometimes the simplest questions have extraordinary answers. Please help us keep this channel running by supporting us on Patreon https://www.patreon.com/AfterSkool . High School vs College - How Do They Compare?

09:02
Try Dashlane here: https://www.dashlane.com/infographicsshow (Plus, here’s a promo code: infographics) Before we start, let’s make something clear. Someone asks on Quora, “Why do Americans call university, college?” It is a little bit confusing if you’re not from the U.S. When Americans talk about college they are usually talking about institutes of higher learning that you attend after you graduate high school. One university might have several colleges, such as Cornell University, which has seven. ‘College’ and ‘university’ are interchangeable. We just thought we’d make that clear. If you say you are going to college in the UK or Australia or somewhere in Asia, it usually means a place of further education or somewhere you might study a vocational subject such as nursing, textile manufacturing or automotive repair. So, today we are talking more about differences after high school graduation rather than a comparison of two similar types of institutions. What Other countries Know, that Americans Do not.

Its sad to say the least, that other countries can easily see what Americans refuse to acknowledge. The proof is right there, for vaccines, 911 organic food and the water supply. Never Do These Things in Foreign Countries

10:13
If you don’t want to be in one of those, or better yet featured on YouTube as “that crazy tourist,” fined or even arrested, pay attention to our list of do’s and don’ts accurate in different countries of the world. “So many countries, so many customs.” Any jet-setter will agree this good old proverb is true. In the age of globalization, going places has become an essential part of our life. We’re all well aware of the fact that while visiting a foreign country, we must obey certain local traditions and common rules. Failing to do so has given a rich ground for many jokes. TIMESTAMPS Russia 0:54 Chile 1:44 Singapore 2:18 India 3:05 Japan 3:29 Mexico 4:07 New Zealand 4:39 Norway 5:25 Turkey 5:49 United Kingdom 6:29 Ireland 7:03 Germany 7:35 Kenya 8:26 Malaysia 9:16 Korea 9:35 SUMMARY - If you want to surprise your Russian girlfriend or your business partner, never give an even number of flowers as a gift. Even numbers of flowers are for grieving and funerals. - Manners matter more to the people of Chile than to other South Americans. It is extremely important not to eat anything with your fingers. - Chewing gum, for example, is banned in Singapore, so you’d better leave it at home before getting on the plane. If you break the gum rule for the first time, you may be fined for up to a $1000. - When in India, you have to keep your private life to yourself and your emotions under control. No matter how much you want to show affection to your special someone, never kiss them in public. - Similar to India, public demonstration of affection is not acceptable in Japan. Remember, there is no hugging, or even worse, kissing, in public! - A good piece of advice will be to stay as thick skinned as possible since Mexicans love making jokes and never miss a chance to do so. Don’t take things too personally. - Remember the difference between “aussies” and “kiwis.” Never mix them up! In case you didn’t know: the “aussies” stand for Australians, and the “kiwis” – for New Zealanders. - When in Norway, don’t ask questions concerning church. This may be taken for disrespect. Many people here don’t attend church, and those who do will want to keep it to themselves. - An essential thing to remember before going to Turkey is not to give anyone the OK sign. It might seem like a sign of approval to you but is considered an obscene gesture for the Turks. - British people like their pudding fresh and their queues well-organized. Don’t jump the queue. Or expect to be judged by the locals. - Do not try to play it cool and sound like Irishmen. For Irish people there is no such a thing as Irish accent; they recognize and divide accents depending on the region of Ireland they come from. - Don’t stare at people. Germans might look very attractive but try to resist the temptation of staring at Fraus on the metro. Only poorly educated and crazy people do that here. - Don’t show disrespect for religion. No matter what their religion may be, Kenyans are very devout. - For Malaysians, this is “the home of the soul” and the most sacred part of the body. Keep yourself from running your fingers through people’s hair, especially babies. - If you want to have good manners in Korea, use two hands when handing over money. When you pay for things, pass on your cash or credit card with both hands. It’s a sign of respect. Do you know any other things that are prohibited in foreign countries? 10 Countries It’s Super Easy to EMIGRATE To

We’ve all felt it. That desperate, cloying urge to escape. That semi-primal need to flee our home country and all its madness and never look back, and instead devote ourselves to relaxing on distant beaches / becoming a kung fu master (it’s a tough call). And we’ve also all felt its accompanying feeling: that sad realization that our dreams are but beautiful illusions, and cruel, cruel reality is gonna drag us kicking and screaming back into its stifling embrace any minute. →Subscribe for new videos every day! https://www.youtube.com/user/toptenznet?sub_confirmation=1 Help us translate our videos: https://www.youtube.com/timedtext_cs_queue?msg=10&tab=0 - Learn more why you might want to help: https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/6052538 Find more lists at: http://www.toptenz.net Entertaining and educational top 10 lists from TopTenzNet! HOW I TRAVEL THE WORLD ✈ CHEAP TRAVEL TIPS

07:39
Start improving your fluency now with the English Fluency Formula audio ebook FREE sample: http://bit.ly/effebook --~-- CREATIVE WAYS TO SAVE  If you're like us, you're more likely to be rich in friendship and in health than you are in the bank, but those are also important! In order to afford things that require some extra cash, you can start using these creative tips today to start saving money and planning your next trip. COVER THE BASICS Before you start planning, you will need to focus first on covering the basics. This means: rent, food, utilities - things that you will have to pay every month, no matter what. After that, you can make travel a priority. PRIORITIZE TRAVEL It's essential, if you want to travel, to make your desire to travel a priority. Create a savings account at your bank and add money into it whenever you can. Cut back on extra unnecessary items - like clothing or shoes you don't really need - or skipping dinners out at restaurants, or racking up a huge bill at the bar. If things like these aren't as high of a priority, you can definitely put them on hold and save that money instead. SAVE OVER TIME When we look online and see what plane tickets and hotels cost nowadays, it's totally understandable to freak out. We do too! When you add everything up, spending thousands of dollars seems like an insurmountable feat, especially when most people don't have that kind of money to spend. We know that travel can be so expensive, especially if it's not planned well, and with enough time beforehand. So, instead of freaking out and counting how much money you'll have to spend, think about the ways you can save over time, and what cuts you can make to your everyday routines that could save you big bucks in the end. For example, if you wanted to save $3,000 over the course of a year, you would only need to save about $8.22 every day (or about $57.69 every week, or $250 each month). If you eat lunch out while you're at work or school, for example, you could save that money instead, bring food from home, and probably save that $8.22 per day that you need. You could also save on that coffee or smoothie you buy on the way to work. Break it down into small, manageable savings that don't feel like one big amount, all at once. FIND SMALL LUXURIES Enjoying your travels doesn't mean you have to splurge! Being able to find the luxury in little things is key to enjoying yourself on your trip but also not wasting money where you don't need to. If you're lucky, yu can even find super luxurious things to do that don't cost a thing! Going to the beach or finding a beautiful, scenic park, street performers, free concerts and museums, and walking around like a local are all free ways of spending quality time in the city you're visiting. Finding luxury in the little things could also be as simple as skipping the "tourist trap" type restaurants, and instead shopping at a local market or grocery store, where you'll be able to sample lots of local foods. I've done this myself! I made myself a picnic lunch to take to the park, and ate it while staring up at the Eiffel Tower. Both the price tag and the view were better than any restaurant I could have chosen! Trying the local street food instead of sit-down restaurants, renting an apartment instead of a hotel, and using public transportation instead of taxis, are also great ways to cut down on extra spending during your trip. ALTERNATIVE TRAVEL The most common way to travel is by air, but that doesn't mean you should limit yourself to a plane ticket! Look for other ways to travel to your destination. Can you drive there? Can you take a bus or a train? Would a boat be a possibility? Look at all the options before you make a decision. And you can also set up alerts on some travel sites to let you know when fares go on sale! TRAVEL FOR WORK OR STUDY One of the best ways to save money and travel at the same time is to find a job or a volunteer opportunity where you might get paid to travel. If you're a student, or would like to go back to college, you could find scholarships that will allow you to travel to other countries to study, and you can save money while you're there by living with local families who rent out rooms for students, also known as a homestay program. How to Stop Translating in Your Head and Start Thinking in English Like a Native

14:54
Stop translating in your head and speak fluent, natural English without hesitations. See the FULL lesson on the blog: http://bit.ly/2Ts72yk Start reading the English Fluency Formula ebook with a FREE sample: http://bit.ly/2PDymf4 In conversations and other situations where you need to be able to process information quickly and respond immediately, translating in your head is a big problem. It slows you down. It makes you hesitate. At times you’ll completely miss out on the conversation because your chance to jump in has come and gone and you’re still trying to translate. On top of all that, a lot of slang, idioms and phrasal verbs can be difficult to translate quickly — if at all! It’s really best for your fluency if you stop translating in your head and learn to start thinking in English. Thinking in English is very important to developing your fluency in English… so let’s go! Here are my nine tips for thinking in English. DO DAILY ACTIVITIES IN ENGLISH Can you change your phone settings to English? How about talking to your pet in English when you’re going for a walk? If you commute to work by train or bus could you buy your fare in English? LISTEN TO MORE ENGLISH FOR IMMERSION WITH NATIVE SPEAKERS Turn on the internet radio, download podcasts, put Netflix or YouTube on in the background while you’re doing your chores or work! Your brain is so amazing that it will begin to recognize patterns and want to follow them too! TRY GUESSING OR PLANNING WHAT ENGLISH SPEAKERS ARE GOING TO SAY When you predict the conversation based on experience, you’ll be more confident and ready to respond. Imagine the conversations that you want to have in the future and create them before they happen so you feel more prepared. It may not go word-for-word how you plan it, so be ready for change. You could write the conversation down and practice it a few times. STOP LEARNING EXCLUSIVELY THROUGH TRANSLATION Observe, watch, hear, smell and relate vocabulary directly to its meaning — not the word in your first language. USE A MONOLINGUAL DICTIONARY A bilingual dictionary is good for one thing — to put your coffee cup on so it doesn’t leave rings on your table. LABEL OBJECTS IN YOUR EVERYDAY LIFE IN ENGLISH You can do this in your mind or actually on pieces of paper taped to the objects (or use sticky notes). Start with everyday objects that you use every day! For example, if I have a book at home and I am learning Portuguese I would label it “livro,” or if I am learning Arabic then I would label it “kitab.” Every time I look at it I am reminded to think that word! TALK TO YOURSELF IN ENGLISH Ask yourself questions and answer them. Make up a short story about a person you see on your way to work. You may want to do this in private when no one else is within earshot. It’s ok if you are not sure if your grammar is perfect, or if you make a mistake. No one will know! If you’re not sure if what you said to yourself is correct or not, then make a note to yourself to find out! You can do some research online, or ask your teacher or a native speaker friend later. JUST START THINKING IN ENGLISH WITH A MANTRA Even the smallest effort is better than nothing. Start with a mantra, or motto, that will help you get started each day in English. For example, “My English is getting better each day.” THINK A LITTLE MORE IN ENGLISH EACH DAY Start small. Make it a habit to think in English a little each day. Set an alarm if it’s hard to remember to switch into English. Then use the timer on your phone or computer to 1 minute to start and think only in English for that amount of time. It doesn’t matter what you think about, or even if you just say a few of the same phrases over and over. See if you can extend the time each day by 30 seconds! [Foreign Correspondents] Ep.113 - College admissions requirements _ Full Episode

25:01
College admissions requirements across the globe, from "Suneung" to the Baccalaureate 수능부터 바칼로레아까지, 세계의 입시제도 On November 15, hundreds of thousands of South Korean students took the "Suneung", also known as College Scholastic Ability Test (CSAT). As it is usual every year, numerous crowds gathered in front of test-sites to cheer the students on, while parents visited places of worship to pray for their children's success. Many accommodations were made for the test-takers, such as a 1-hour delay to the start of working hours, as well as extra buses and subway trains in operation. Every year, students face grueling competition to enroll in university, with nearly 70% of the population opting for post-secondary education, although that figure has fallen in recent years. This is compared to the average of 44% seen among OECD countries, reflecting the desire of many Korean students to pursue a higher education, who even wait another year to re-take the CSAT in hopes of getting into an elite school. South Korea is not alone when it comes to academic competition, as a similar phenomenon can also be seen in other countries such as China, Japan and India, with students there also viewing enrollment at a top school as the key to earning a good job. Ranging from the SAT in the United States, to the Baccalaureate exam in France, how do countries across the world differ from Korea in terms of how their university admissions procedures are conducted? We delve into this issue in more detail in this week's edition of "Foreign Correspondents". PanelistsAnn Babe, Contributing Journalist / U.S. News & World ReportFrédéric Ojardias, Journalist / Radio France InternationaleJeroen Laurens Visser, Journalist / de Volkskrant 12 COUNTRIES THAT MAY NOT SURVIVE THE NEXT 20 YEARS

07:49
Subscribe! Because SMART IS THE NEW SEXY: https://goo.gl/JTfP6L The time we are living in can hardly be called stable; conversely, it’s chaotic and uncertain. There are many economic and environmental problems that the world is going through: climate change, poverty, globalization. It all makes us start pondering upon the end of the world scenario. But what if we say that for some countries this scenario has already started? Smart is the New Sexy compiled a list of countries that may not survive by 2040. Number 12 is The Bahamas. For island nations like the Bahamas, a small change of even just 1.2 degrees Celsius would mean a catastrophic change to its coastal lines. If the ocean levels rise as much as 5 feet, The Bahamas would lose 80% of its land mass. Island nations like The Bahamas rely on tourism, so they need to implement drastic measures to save time while more long-term measures to stop global warming are implemented. Sea walls, for example, are one of the measures that could help in the meantime by stopping the increasingly strong and wild waves that keep crashing against places inhabited by the nation’s population. Fiji is 11 in our list. Rising sea levels have flooded the farmlands and the homes of thousands of Fijian people. This has forced most of the population to seek new homes in the mainland, or in bigger islands like Australia. Within Fiji, the nation is trying their best to save time by relocating their citizens closer to the inland, an initiative that costs the government over $800,000 per 30 houses. Like with every other island nation, the lack of funding and the temporary measures make the future of this country look grim. Wanna know who's left? 10 Things You Didn’t Know About Flight Attendants

12:17
How to Get the Most out of Your Flight. Maybe you love to travel by plane, or maybe just the idea makes you clench your teeth in terror, but we bet you didn’t know all of this. It’s time to ask the experts who fly all the time: flight attendants to reveal their secrets and tips on how to make your flight more comfortable and safe. Many of us consider ourselves experts at navigating departures, flights, and takeoffs almost as naturally as we get out of bed in the morning or take a walk around the block. But however experienced you are, learning some of these insights about airplanes can make your flights more pleasant. It might also make the experience better for the pilot and crew of flight attendants who have to do this all day, every day. TIMESTAMPS All-male crews are a thing of the past. 1:21 Not waiters, but captain’s assistants! 2:36 The crew is just as frustrated as you are. 3:25 Don’t sleep during takeoff or landing. 4:05 Sleeping when cruising is a great idea. 5:13 Chicken or fish? 5:47 Follow instructions — or else! 6:42 Sit toward the back. 7:45 Rely on your flight attendants. 8:49 Flying tips straight from the pros! 9:18 Music: https://www.youtube.com/audiolibrary/music SUMMARY -Before 1930, the crews of airplanes were 100% male, including the pilot, ground crew, and all of the flight attendants. Over a hundred years, the gender roles reversed, and many now see this as a primarily female profession. -In reality, a flight attendant’s job is to assist the captain by managing the cabin during a flight. -Airline crews are typically paid by the hour, but only the hours spent in actual flight are paid. A flight doesn’t actually start until the door is closed. -Experienced flight attendants recommend avoiding falling asleep on take-off, descent, and landing.
