It's The Quiet Man. I strongly believe that studying where things go wrong in media is incredibly important for avoiding those mistakes in the future, so with that in mind I'll just say this: The Quiet Man is maybe the worst game I've played since Ride to Hell. On almost every conceivable level, from the inefficiency of its storytelling to its woeful handling of visual information in gameplay, it is an absolute trainwreck. Let's talk about it. --- Interview footage - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bSF-mFJQHqc Footage of one shot of Dane and PoliceDad in the car was picked up from a video by CJSeedge (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KgVAHqDm9a8 - watch this if you don't want to play the game!) and the brief footage from Fight Club was from a video by Derek Turner (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YpRZEObdj3s - high quality Fight Club PS2 content right here). Bad Writing - Why Most Games Tell Bad Stories - Extra Credits

06:37
Why is the writing in games so terrible? To find the answer, we have to look at narrative as a whole: everything from level design to art style contributes to create the story of a game, but too often writers are left out of this process and forced to play paramedic to a faltering storyline. Good dialogue should meet at least one of four basic criteria: 1) Tells us about the world 2) Tells us about the speaker 3) Tells us about other characters, or 4) Moves the plot forward. TOP 5 GAMES OF 2015 (inc. Analysis) - Writing on Games

16:59
It's been a heck of a year, so let's indulge my need to put everything into organised lists! Join me as I go in-depth in my analysis of what I thought were the best games of 2015 - will Konami's actions have robbed Metal Gear Solid V of the top spot? How will The Witcher 3 fare? Will Fallout 4's technical problems be enough to keep it off the list? Will Hamish ever stop being such a snob and get a next-gen console? All these questions and more answered in the last episode of Writing On Games of the year! --- Patreon: http://patreon.com/writingongames --- NOTE: forgot to credit it in the video, but the PC glitch footage of Arkham Knight was made by deka 95. If you like the video, if you'd consider hitting subscribe you'd really be helping the channel to grow, and if you think someone else might appreciate the content then please feel free to share the video with them! Thank you so much! Seriously though, as I state at the end of the video, thank you all so much for your support over the past six months. Uploads have been somewhat more sporadic than I originally anticipated, but this channel and documenting my essays and thoughts on design and current releases has been one of the most rewarding things I've pursued this year. The channel is still small as hell and sure, if it were to grow I'd welcome it, but ultimately even if it stays at this level forever it matters little to me because the process is so rewarding and enjoyable in itself. 2015 has been a crazy year for me, and I'm really glad to have had you all along for the ride. Have a safe and fun holiday and I'll see you next year. Also, immediately after I'd recorded everything and edited the entire video/rendered it, I realised I'd forgotten all about The Beginner's Guide, a game which had an incredibly profound effect on me when I played it. Just so you know, I'll definitely be dedicating an entire video to it at some point to try and make up for it... ALSO, WHY DID I JUST PLAY ROCKET LEAGUE FOR THE FIRST TIME AFTER I STARTED UPLOADING THIS VIDEO. GAME OF ALL THE YEARS. GAME OF ALL TIME.

Writing games in very modern C++ - Guy Davidson [ACCU 2017]

01:25:16
The SG13 subgroup, HMI or Human-Machine Interface, seeks to offer a 2D graphics API to the standard committee. This is a considerable improvement on stdout when it comes to output from programs. One advantage such an API offers is a standard platform for game development: currently, one has to choose from a considerable array of libraries and engines such as OpenGL, DirectX, SDL, SFML, and so on. The job of merely creating and displaying a window is deeply non-trivial. This talk will consider the prospect of developing games using only standard C++. It will cover the options available for the single developer learning to write games, and how this may change with the adoption of this new API. It will include plenty of simple examples and consider how this might change how C++ is taught and how this increases accessibility to school-age learners. We will also write a game together. Live.

Fallout 4 Review/Analysis - Writing on Games

12:28
After a long break (sorry - I've been busy, alright?!), Writing On Games is back! Today, I'm here to talk about Fallout 4 - a game whose hype pre-release could be rivalled by very few games, yet has divided fan opinion like no other game in recent memory. Some say this is due to the game's similarities to previous entries in the series - here I argue through analysis of systems old and new why Fallout 4 is actually less effective than 3 or New Vegas, for example. I also attempt to explain why the game left me somewhat disappointed, despite still being one of the better games of the year. This is just my opinion, feel free to disagree! --- Patreon: http://patreon.com/writingongames --- As always, if you enjoy what you see, feel free to subscribe for fairly regular uploads of similar video essays, and if you feel like someone else might get a kick out of this, feel free to share it with them! Does Player Freedom Actually Make Sandboxes Compelling? - Writing on Games

15:11
In this episode of Writing on Games, I examine the concept of open world sandbox design in games such as Grand Theft Auto V, San Andreas, GTA 3, Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain and Just Cause 3 - looking at what makes them tick. With reference to a piece by Steve Breslin of Gamasutra, I assert that it is not player freedom alone that makes a sandbox compelling for a player - it is the way that sandbox responds to the player's inputs that keeps players coming back. And yes, I do use mods and cheats in GTA to do some real dumb shit. It's a lot of fun, you should try it some time. --- Patreon: http://patreon.com/writingongames Podcast (iTunes) - https://itunes.apple.com/gb/podcast/writing-on-gamescast/id1124674245 --- Thank you so much for your continued support - the channel is very nearly one year old and it's crazy to think how far it's come since I started it. Kids Reading And Writing Games | Improve Kids Skill

Click here to get more games http://tinyurl.com/l9f4lx2 Kids Reading And Writing Games | Improve Kids Skill It's not easy to get a kid into reading and writing! Unfortunately kids don't usually consider reading as a fun activity and it can be difficult sometimes getting them into opening a book! To make reading more fun for your kid, we recommend that you start with comic books. Most parents don't consider comic books as serious reading. It turns out that there are excellent comic books available that are both entertaining and instructive as they can help your kids develop their reading skills and learn about different subjects. There are also reading games for kids that can help kids practice reading and writing. For example, sentence building kits can help children improve language and reading, but also writing and spelling skills. With sentence building kits, kids learn to place adjectives before nouns and to move verbs around. Reading kits are available in many forms. Children usually enjoy them because they can be played with other kids. Furthermore, sentence building kits usually contain magnetic tiles that can be used on magnetic boards, file cabinets or on fridges. Your kid could have a lot of fun leaving short messages on the fridge in the kitchen. Perfect if you want your child to start reading and forming sentences! Spelling and Writing English Alphabet Letters Games for Kids

08:29
Spelling games are a great way to help your children learn to spell those tricky words. By allowing spelling practice and teaching spelling strategies, your children will begin to attempt to spell more words with confidence. Sometimes children just need some spelling help and this spelling activity can do that - it takes the emphasis of the difficulty of spelling and instead allows the child to focus on having some fun! If your child is learning English you will know that English spelling can be tricky as all words in the English language are not phonetic so by giving your child English spelling games or spelling bee games, they can begin their spelling word practice in a more fun and interactive way. The main idea behind this alphabet game is to teach the child to learn writing letters in several ways but in different orders given. This game requires a dice, a piece of paper with the instructions for every number that the kid will get on the dice, and eventually the empty piece of paper which the kid will write the word on. Every single time the kid will throw the dice, he/she will be asked to perform the task given for this number, it could be to write the word with a specific hand, it could be writing the word up-side down, it could be writing it with different colors, etc. this will depend on the creativity of the parent and the orders they are giving. In order to make sure that the kids are practicing it all, you should remove the word they are supposed to work on and write down after their second trial, this will give them the chance to remember how it should be written and will help them to practice the whole thing. In order to make sure that the kids are not cheating, remove the paper totally or else fold it over so that they find it hard to see what is written on the other side. There are still other creative games that parents could depend on and try with their kids. One of them is the XO game but instead of filling those boxes with X's and O's, the parent will assign a word for the kid to write in the boxes and will then choose one for himself/herself. This is one good practice for the kids to depend on and manage to write down the letters, read the words, and recognize these words later on (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8DO_qeSroDs). Spelling worksheets or spelling resources like this are so easy to make and can be as challenging or as easy as you like - you can begin with ABC spelling and develop the words for kids as they become more confident. It all starts with learning the ABC alphabet and this we all know could happen through singing it in a song or writing it down to the kids (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=smcw82TTh_M), then it comes to the part of teaching the kids these letters and how to write them down (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=339D5-WijRk), and eventually it all comes to this part of pronouncing the letters correctly and knowing that this will also differ when it comes within a word, which is phonics (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xQoFRGX83to). Spelling and writing games for kids are all important, they give the kids the chance to play while at the same time learn something new to them, which is exactly what will keep them excited and will also make them the ones asking for the whole thing to be repeated and the game to be played once again (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wmk5gY7Zb00). Always give the child the freedom to do whatever they want as long as they are responding to the needs of the game and at the same time make them the ones leading it because that's when they will love repetition and will ask you to play with them more than once. This is one of the different techniques used with kids when it comes to the spelling and the writing games which they could play and depend on, but there are lots of others which they could try out as well! Enjoy watching this video about the spelling and the writing games and let us hear your feedback about how much it worked out with your child. A great way to help your child become a great speller! The Witcher 3 and the Management of Narrative Scale - Writing on Games

13:37
HEADS UP - I try to keep spoilers to an absolute minimum here, but it does feature footage from Blood and Wine (again though, I tried to keep it to stuff that happens in the first half hour or so). Just something to keep in mind. --- Patreon: http://patreon.com/writingongames Podcast (iTunes) - https://itunes.apple.com/gb/podcast/writing-on-gamescast/id1124674245 --- So, the show is a year old now! Holy heck! I figured what better way to celebrate than to finally start digging into my Game of the Year for 2015, that hasn't had its own video yet. Consider this a pseudo-review/analysis piece. For me, The Witcher 3's greatest triumph is the way it manages its scale. So many RPGs fall into the trap of placing the player character at the centre of everything that is occurring within the world - this results in the scale of the narrative becoming untenable, making it substantially harder to really get players invested in the game. The Witcher 3 eschews this, instead creating a game which focuses on the small things as much as (if not more than) the bigger picture. In reducing the scale of the narrative from some cataclysmic conflict that only you can stop to focusing on the way the conflict hangs over the lives of the citizens you encounter, they make it far easier for players to relate to characters. In this episode of Writing on Games then, I examine how the game achieves this reduction of scale through the way it handles characterisation, world design, and player choice, making it one of the most daring AAA action RPGs of recent times. --- As I say, the show is a year old and I can't quite believe it. Thank you SO MUCH to everyone who has watched, subscribed, listened, spread the word, pledged to the Patreon... every single one of you means so much to me and I'm so glad to have you on board as the channel continues to grow. If you feel like you have taken something positive from the show, if you would consider pledging at www.patreon.com/writingongames then I would be so appreciative. Every donation really makes justifying the amount of time I spend making these dumb videos a whole lot easier. Also, I captured a bunch of footage for this episode but for some reason when it came to editing, it all decided to corrupt itself somehow. With that in mind, I would like to sincerely thank the following people for saving my ass (even though they don't know they did): FiGhTiNCoWBoY for the majority of the Witcher footage (as well as getting me through a lot of Dark Souls 3 in the murky hell that was pre-release) - https://www.youtube.com/user/fightincowboy713 Joe Leonard and 14Karma0 for the Skyrim footage - https://www.youtube.com/user/Maelfyn and https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC-LxUV2iDtaGLKw9Ht12qsA respectively. Ahoj50, Polygon and Van Houten for the rest of the Witcher footage - https://www.youtube.com/user/ahoj50, https://www.youtube.com/user/polygon and https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCkALCI6BA6MRtW2nQvlAmWA respectively. You're all great, thank you very much. Thank you so much to everyone for their continued support! Here's to another year of this big dumb thing.

Hitman, Improvisation and Gleeful Absurdity - Writing on Games

13:18
In this episode of Writing on Games, I examine new release Hitman on PC - one of the most absurd games I have played in a long while, and some of the most fun I've had with a recent game as a result. I examine the way the game allows for true mechanical self-expression through player improvisation, linking the idea back to the way improvisation works in other artistic media such as music. It's messy, it's uncanny, it can be riddled with mistakes, it requires the audience to recalibrate their ears to make sense of the non-formal art they are experiencing, but ultimately it allows for a deeper connection between audience and the systems they are interfacing with if they are willing to work around the chaotic quirks. Hitman arguably fulfils many of these qualities in a way that few games do. It's not a shooter or even a stealth action game, but an uncanny toybox, and it requires the player to think outside the box, and within a somewhat broken system. This, as I posit in the video, is a good thing. --- Patreon: http://patreon.com/writingongames --- As I state at the start, footage is a little choppy here because the game doesn't run well even on my R9290 and the lowest graphical settings. Also, for disclosure's sake, review code was provided for this game by Square Enix PR, and the video goes into why that is something I feel I should state given this game's rocky road to release. Thanks very much for watching! Your continued support of the channel is immensely appreciated. The channel recently hit 700 subscribers which may seem tiny, but to me is kind of crazy. As always, if you like what you see and think someone else might dig it, if you share it with them I would greatly appreciate it. New videos every fortnight! Why Blighttown Really Matters (Dark Souls) - Writing on Games

08:55
In this episode of Writing on Games, I revisit perhaps my favourite game ever (Dark Souls) for the first time in months. I know a lot of you subscribed based on my previous Dark Souls videos, but since there are a billion people talking about how the game is 'harsh but fair', I didn't want to make another video on it until I had something resembling a unique angle on it. So I decided to defend an area most people hate... On this playthrough of the game, I realised that Blighttown, an area despised by many, actually became one of my favourite areas in the game, despite the dread I still felt going through it. The way it toys with the verticality of the level design and how this plays into the way the game rewards the player make Blighttown genuinely oppressive in a way no area up to that point can be. The way it turns the world itself into your enemy is quintessentially Dark Souls, and I love it for that. Also, I'm going to be able to play Bloodborne soon thanks to one of my patrons! I'm very excited, and it means you can stop telling me to play it soon... --- Patreon - http://patreon.com/writingongames Podcast (iTunes) - https://itunes.apple.com/gb/podcast/writing-on-gamescast/id1124674245 Podcast (RSS) - http://writingongamescast.libsyn.com/rss --- Anor Londo footage from EberonAdventures - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OCPrxlY4_FE Lost Izalith footage from BlueLizardJello - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=saPfKfOPQy4 Spec Ops: The Line trailer from MrVg247 - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kIoJnMT3yUI --- Thank you SO much for watching, subscribing, sharing, pledging to the Patreon, etc. It all helps more than you can possibly know and I can't thank you enough for it. In all seriousness, I think it's fun to reflect at the end of a year, and this seems like a good way to do that. I mean, hell, 2016 was a helluva year for video games, if nothing else. Firewatch and the Consequence of Player Choice (Review/Analysis) - Writing on Games

12:58
As I say in the video, it's hard to talk about Firewatch without going into some story elements (seeing as the game IS its narrative). Some of the later parts of the video talk about the nature of the ending (without going into specific plot details, but you know, just warning you). So consider this yet another spoiler warning if you want to go into this totally blind. --- Patreon: http://patreon.com/writingongames --- In this edition of Writing On Games, I examine Campo Santo's recent release, Firewatch. Using Firewatch as an example, I talk about player choice - on the surface, the game's choices seem to feel incredibly insignificant to the plot at large. Under closer examination and with reference to literary theory, however, I posit that these smaller choices actually give the player a more complete sense of place than in games where the choices are massive, plot-altering decisions. I also criticise the game for its mishandling of some of the elements of its plot, which in turn negatively affect other elements as well, making this a cautious recommendation rather than a wholehearted one. I guess I also talk about Gone Home so I hope the world doesn't explode. Thank you so much to everyone for watching and for your support - the channel recently hit 500 subs which is crazy for me! If you liked the video, if you hit subscribe and maybe share it with someone who you think might enjoy it, that'd be grrrrreat because it really helps me out. If you didn't like it, feel free to let me know and do neither of those things. This is all just my opinion. Oh, and for disclosure - Campo Santo provided the code for this game free of charge. Gone Home was paid for by me years ago. Thanks again for watching!

Is Hitman's Episodic Nature Actually Beneficial to the Game? - Writing on Games

11:58
Hey! This is an episode of something new I want to try - a series called Meditations. Essentially the unbelievably generous support of my Patrons has allowed me to justify spending more time doing this, and as such I want to try and get more content out there for you guys. Meditations will be slightly more opinion based than the mainline Writing on Games episodes and (I think - I'm still figuring this stuff out) will consider a question about a particular game or element of the industry or news or whatever. Let me know what you think of this development and if you would like to see more of this kind of thing! --- Patreon: http://patreon.com/writingongames --- In this episode, I return to recent release Hitman (which, for disclosure's sake, I will state I received review code for). Essentially a lot of criticism has been levelled at both Square Enix and IO Interactive for their decision to release the latest Hitman in episodic chunks rather than as a whole package. This is due to the perception of shady, anti-consumer business practices and the fact that episodic release frameworks are typically associated with games that feature a strong narrative component. With that in mind though, now that we are two episodes into the game, the general consensus on the gameplay has been almost universally positive. Clearly the reasons people are angry about Hitman's release are entirely separate from the gameplay, which allows the player the opportunity to completely control the moment-to-moment narrative of a mission through the game's mechanics. I want to ask the question though - could it be argued that the episodic nature actually benefits the game as a whole rather than detract from it? The overarching narrative forced into the game definitely suffers, however I would argue that this is in large part due to the way in which the gameplay does such an amazing job of making each level its own self-contained story. As a result each level features an easily defined A-B plot which is completely controlled by the player, and the player is encouraged to return to these levels in order to attempt different ways to alter their own narrative. This, I would argue, simply wouldn't be the case if the game was released as a whole package outright, as much as concerns are understandable. --- Please let me know what you think in the comments or by following me on Twitter @officialhamishb! If you want to support the show financially then you can do so at http://www.patreon.com/writingongames. The level of support I've received has been astounding and I'm so thankful. To my current Patrons, if you're not comfortable being charged for extra content like this, then please let me know or set a monthly limit you're willing to be charged on Patreon. You've put your trust in me with this, and I couldn't dream of betraying that by having you pay more than you can afford. You're now directly involved in aiding the show's production, so I want to get you guys involved! Thank you SO MUCH for your continued support!

This episode is the actual reason Telltale died. I have never been more upset with a game in my entire life.
