Picture this, though: Hermes shows up, they come in and land, and everyone is shocked that Beth is pregnant. Oh, and she and Chris are married. Payback for NASA not telling them Mark was alive.

I'm wondering if this wasn't an improv by Michael Pena :-) Even the steely-eyed commander chuckled.

I’m just putting it out there they’ve must’ve invented a new position.
Kalpeet Nadkarni (2 months ago)
Also according to NASA rules it doesn't make sense to have it in the movie. Thats why she says they will be breaking rules. They will be out there for months and all the additional radiation will be harmful for her in case she gets pregnant. I don't suppose NASA will make arrangements for birth control as they won't expect someone to engage in "extra curriculum activities".

"are you mad?" like a child to a parent.
Glitcher2000 (4 months ago)
I wanted the film to include the scene where Johanssen explains to her father how she would be the sole survivor if the Hermes fails to collect supplies from Earth.
CharlieBarbarossa (4 months ago)
That is not a small ship. They could sleep a hundred people in that very room.

FireOccator (5 months ago)
30 rules? What are those rules?
TheDoctor2nd (5 months ago)
FireOccator Not at all what I meant.
FireOccator (5 months ago)
You're right. They shouldn't waste the lube so carelessly.
TheDoctor2nd (5 months ago)
FireOccator Well, certain regulations prohibit acts that have certain outcomes. Like wasting supplies or endangering the mission and so forth. Having sex could fall under such regulations, so that's why she says roughly 30 rules.
FireOccator (5 months ago)
+TheDoctor2nd One rule saying "Don't have sex!" would have sufficed.
TheDoctor2nd (5 months ago)
There are regulations prohibiting sex between crew members during missions. Partly to maintain unit cohesiveness and avoid discord, but also for health reasons. Breathing during sex is heavy, which wastes oxygen. Plus the tiny chance of getting pregnant while in space is not ideal.
Mr Eboric (5 months ago)
0 g jizz just floating around
Ahsan Siddiqui (5 months ago)

Recorded longest distance in space where humans have boned!
TallBob1962 (5 months ago)
"If one seal breaks you die", he says while leaning against a window the other side of which is open space. Doh!
TheDoctor2nd (5 months ago)
TallBob1962 The difference is he's not sleeping there. The crew quarters are deeper inside the ship or simply more reinforced because if something happens while they're asleep, they're still protected. Other parts of the ship aren't like that because if something happens while they're not in the room, they can repair it.

zlozlozlo (6 months ago)
Too bad they made the movie Hermes so oversized this scene would have no sense. I mean the ship's gym is bigger and has more machines than some gyms I've been to.
zlozlozlo (5 months ago)
Yes, the Hermes needs to be a certain size to allow rotation. But even then, space would be limited. The actual Hermes would have been way more cramped than what they've shown in the movie. This is most apparent with the gym. Yes, the Hermes would need a gym. ISS also has one. But the one in the movie has two rowing machines, two treadmills, an elliptical, a stationary bicycle and 5 benches. All that for a crew of six. That's ridiculous. Couldn't they, I don't know, take turns instead? Every gram you put on that space ship is extra mass your engine has to push around. Not to mention a rocket had to boost it to orbit at great cost. NASA, or anyone else designing a spaceship, for that matter, would never allow such pointless redundancy. An actual space ship (and the Hermes in the book) would make much more efficient use of space, and there would be a lot less of it. That is why when Martinez says the Airlock 2 is the "only place where he can sleep without being in people's way", on the book Hermes it makes sense, and on the movie Hermes it makes zero sense. I mean he says it while sitting in a room where 20 people could lay out sleeping bags without any problem.
TheDoctor2nd (5 months ago)
zlozlozlo It's possible the ship is so large in order to accommodate a design that allows it to spin in order to generate enough force to simulate artificial gravity. And a gym would be needed to maintain muscle tone in low-G for months on end.
Sunnchilde (7 months ago)
All the more reason to add another 500 odd days to your mission. :-)
Hadi f. (7 months ago)
aww seb
Michael Song (7 months ago)
I'm glad they cut this shit out. It takes out all the epicness of the movie.
Caleb Britannia (8 months ago)
In all fairness this was a terrible call, assuming she got pregnant they would have to raise the baby on the Hermes for its entire life
Ariane Bolt (1 month ago)
No reason pregnancy couldn’t work out, especially since they have “gravity”.
TheDoctor2nd (5 months ago)
naihanchin Kempo Caleb does have a point. That is why regulations do exist that prohibit this kind of thing, on top of oxygen rationing and maintaining unit integrity. However, even if there was the small chance she could get pregnant, it's highly unlikely she would be able to continue the pregnancy to term. Physics doesn't allow certain bodily functions to run right while in a low-G Environment.
naihanchin Kempo (5 months ago)
at that point one year if that took um one yr ish to get the Mars would take one yr to get back. 9 months pregnant that would only be three months ..Oh ever concider "Birth control" they would be using it
Matthew Chatterton (8 months ago)
I loved that in the book! Why delete it?!! WHY?!!!

I'm sorta glad they didn't use this scene. Because it takes away a little bit of the seriousness and focus of the situation Mark was in. It's a fun scene, but it's not that important to the main plot.

Unfortunately you can't get an erection in space. Unless their rooms are in that artificial gravity wheel thing the gym is in.

you can, it just that your blood pressure start lower, you can always use a treadmill to get your pressure up and hope the excitement of sex in space will keep your heartrate up long enough to finish the business... xD

I wish this was in the film. The emotional seen they shared kinda hit me out of left field.
Anon B (6 days ago)
Oscar O. Rosas "emotional seen"
Alexandra (3 months ago)
agree completely. its a small scene but it adds a lot of emotional depth to a crew that i initially didn't really feel a connection too as well as humanizes the characters. even in space we fall in love, and plus it explains the kiss scene later in the movie which was weird to me without this context

"Getting it on" In space isn't as easy as you make think. In zero G you wouldn't really be able to make physical contact with your partner without accidentally sending them flying towards the other end of the ship.
Ariane Bolt (1 month ago)
Or you could, you know, wrap your arms around them.
John Smith (6 months ago)
They are not in zero gravity, as indeed is clear from the clip itself since they are not floating around. The rotation of the ship is used to simulate gravity.

This is a direct passage and scene from the book by Andy Weir. The only line they forgot is when Rick finds out he say "Nice! How about the million mile high club?"
naihanchin Kempo (5 months ago)
Minus the first line prettymuch "I am so fucked, that's my considered opinion. FUCKED" they had the storm first rather then Watney telling about it after it happen
Lachlan Browse (11 months ago)
and the explanation about why they couldn't use Watney's room. But that's really testament to Weir writing, he made a novel that could be tuned into a Hollywood movie fairly accurately
JustSaiyanSteve (1 year ago)
I can see why they took it out, it distracted from the seriousness. Lol.
Lachlan Browse (11 months ago)
The movie was a ton more serious than the novel - and the close relationship on the Hermes created a great juxtaposition with the loneliness of Acidalia Planitia
CloudStreets (1 year ago)
Glad they left that one out.

Phil O'Shaughnessy (5 months ago)
Kinda beats the mile high club, huh?
GAU-8 (1 year ago)
Glad it was filmed, but not put in the movie. Because if they did, they would have had to create an additional scene to help understand the out of blue romance. (Which is mentioned in the book that Watney tells he (the other astronaut...i forgot his name) should tell Johansen he likes her. But that would be an additional scene, besides the one he tells the commander to visit his parents house when the get back. So movie/time wise, it adds a bit more story, that didn't need to be in. Which as Weir wanted was little to zero love story in a space rescue book.

Krzysztof z Lasu (1 year ago)
For those of you who are saying 'it's good they cut it off' - this was in the book, along with some other things that would've made the movie better
Nikunj Dixit (7 months ago)
Just because its in the book doesn't mean it needs to be in the movie. This scene is cute buts its unnecessary. So is a lot of other stuff that was cut out from the book.
Ao Chen (8 months ago)
Krzysztof z Lasu Yeah but they would've also made the movie a lot longer.
Simon Moore (1 year ago)
What if she gets pregnant in space? I presume they didn't take any condoms with them of course.
Ariane Bolt (1 month ago)
27in27 Beth was still getting her period. When Mark goes through her stuff it briefly shows a stack of pads.
Mickey Garlock (1 month ago)
Yeah, well murder is forbidden also.
Ariane Bolt (2 months ago)
Thing is, if it’s not safe to be pregnant in space, it can’t be all that great for the astronauts who don’t get pregnant. They should be getting all the vitamins and whatnot they need.
fcisuperguy (2 months ago)
ABQSentinel Ignoring the professionalism element to it all - in the book (and movie), the Hermes is equipped with a rotating segment which produces artificial gravity, meaning the biological issues would be negated
Bomilcar Toth (4 months ago)
Why "of course"? Very long space flight. What do they do on the space station?
TheWestFire (1 year ago)
They took out a character developing scene that's less than a minute long because...why? Because it took away from the seriousness of Mark's situation or because they wanted no sexual innuendos in a PG-13 movie?
srayj (20 hours ago)
My guess would be pacing. This scene in the book is used to tell us about the Ares crew and how they and the ship are coping by adding over 500 days to their mission and it is accompanied by a lot of technical scenes of Mark preparing and making his trip to the rendezvous point, but they pretty much cut all of that out and do a time jump instead, so the placement of this scene would have been difficult and would have messed up the overall flow of the third act when we see emaciated Mark leave the hab, travel, and create the necessary changes to the MAV. At this point they just want to get to the rescue, which is likely why they also excluded the communication snafu and storm Mark faced in the book.
Katie Li (11 months ago)
TheWestFire probably the first one, cause their relationship was hardly developed and it would have distracted from the overall plpt
This was in the book.
Joshua Plotkin (1 year ago)
am I the only one that thinks it ironic that she refers to the largest spacecraft ever built as a small ship?
Mach Dude (3 months ago)
She used to bunk in a submarine which is comparatively huge. In comparison, the habitable compartments of the Hermes are only a fraction of that size.
Lachlan Browse (11 months ago)
And even if it was that big it would still only be about 120 meters long (its seems only a little bigger than the ISS that 100 meters long), and the place wasn't built for privacy. Also the crew were really close and Watney worked out they liked each other before he got stranded so Lewis, as the commander, would almost definitely see a shift in the relations between crew mates
sparrowJLT (1 year ago)
In the book the Hermes was smaller than in the movie.. it didnt had this giant empty cafe style lounges for example
Pigeonhead (1 year ago)
OfficialFOY (1 year ago)
The scene is cute but it's illogical - Watney is not there right? Just sleep in his room.
Jamie Sleeman (28 days ago)
Akin Khoo That wouldn't be a problem as flare events, while damn fast, don't move at light speed. Any alert sent to the ship re a flare event WOULD however and the drills such a crew practiced would have them under cover in five minutes, even when being woken from deep sleep.
Toanoopie (2 months ago)
The ship design as described in the book was a bit more realistic.
Turkey Feat (5 months ago)
Akin Khoo They couldn't take a deathstar to mars because it is trademarked by lucasfilms, otherwise they might have obviously
Akin Khoo (5 months ago)
it about designing a realistic ship, sure it a movie then why not go to mars on a DEATH STAR? that is not the point, they are trying to be realistic which is why they try to be cute with the climate control bullshit. yet it make no sense from the design pov. more so why would any part of the system not be accessible for maintenance? the apollo 13 crew would be dead if they can't hot wire the lunar lander to use the scrubber for the command module since the lander isn't design to operate for the entire length of the return mission. the point of doing man mission is that man can build stuff, no space space will be design for thing to be "in the hull", just look at the ISS climate control, it virtually a rubber tube that run down the center length of the station internally so the crew and attach stuff to it to redirect the air. this system is of course more important in space then just some temperature issue, it is require to avoid CO2 build up. I would be surprise that he hasn't just DIE from a failure in the air circulation system.
Prof. Ritorn (7 months ago)
Akin Khoo it is a movie...
XxTenshiChokoxX (1 year ago)
I was wondering why they didn't have this scene because it was in the book. I guess they wanted to keep the subtle, surprise element of their relationship to later in the movie.
Felix Iaccarino (4 days ago)
