There are reports coming out that Nintendo Switch consoles are mysteriously cracking on their own, bending even when not in the dock, or otherwise getting scratched all on their own.

The Switch has been with us for over a year now, and during that time it has been lavished with praise for its versatility, portability and superb software - and rightly so.
However, no piece of gaming hardware is totally perfect and Switch has also endured its fair share of less positive press; one early issue was that some Switch units suffered from scratched screens due the console's dock, while other users reported warped consoles due the high levels of heat generated by the system. Fast forward to the present, and we've got another potential hardware headache on our hands.
Upon booting up one of our launch day Switch consoles recently, we discovered several cracks along the top edge of the device - mainly located around the vent and the area around the headphone socket.
We take pride in the fact that we look after our consoles and had taken special care with this particular unit from day one, so we decided to ask on Twitter if anyone else had experienced the same problem, just to make sure we weren't at fault ourselves - after all, portable consoles are at risk from bumps and knocks, right? Perhaps we'd just knocked the machine one day and hadn't noticed? This rant video goes into topics like this covered on several other news sites like Nintendo Life, IGN, and EndGadget.
My Switch keeps bending more and more and now it has a cracking forming along the back!! Hopefully Nintendo enables cloud saves soon since this thing is about to break completely. :( Thanks for watching and liking this video!
DreamcastGuy wow how can you not know this? You have a gaming channel... But your switch is not warped!!!! All new Nintendo switches comes with a slight curve like that straight out of the box... How do I know?? Well when I had my switch I returned it for this reason got a brand new one took it out the box havent even turned it on yet and first thing I checked was the curve and guess what... It was there!!! So this was made like that... I later sold the switch and got a ps4 tho cause I'm a big doom fan and doom ran like shit on the switch but that's another story
Who are these people who ended up trusting microsoft after red ring? That was the reason I didn't buy an Xbox One at launch. I didn't need any of the other things that cropped up after their reveal. 7 systems later, thats a lot of down time just because they had to beat sony to market. Pass.
So this is pretty bad. I trust the Nintendo brand to not screw me on launch hardware beyond their incremental upgrades.
I blame the dock mine is in perfect condition 5 months later only used dock twice . I just don't think the dock was designed well it kinda goes inward putting pressure on the switch and the walls increase insulation making the switch have a harder time to cool down and the vents placement on the dock is lazy allowing less airflow than when undocked. I bought a extension cable for the dock so i could use a stand and i noticed a big difference in how hot the switch body gets when its docked outside the actual dock and has nothing covering the back and front and no pressure applied to the body its just a bit warm
there are still people who are such fanboys they refuse to accept that some docks scuff consoles, and it is NOT user treatment. my launch day switch had this issue, my new one does not. Both treated exactly the same. fanboys gunna fanboy.
I have noticed my switch getting really hot when I’m playing without the A/C on. When I play somewhere else beside my bedroom I put a fan close to it and it really works, it doesn’t get hot anymore. I think it depends on where you play and how hot it’s the room
This is why I don't need the Nintendo Switch, because of overheating and cracking. This is worst than vintage radios going back to the days of Bakelite during World War 2 and during the post-war of the 1940's and the early 1950's. The Switch did that decades later with cracks.
I have the same issue with mine.. Got my Switch 3 months ago (Mario Odyssey edition) and didn't played much until one day I noticed that the case was bend... I send it back to Nintendo and they gave me a new one but guess what? The new one starts to bend as well! This is crazy... I don't play often or long sessions but then my second Switch is starting to warp again like the old one I returned. Seems like I have very bad luck or Nintendo really has a problem with the Switch...
Meanwhile my NES is shaking it's head hearing about that problems...
As long as Nintendo takes care of its customers there is no problem. There are going to be defects, fix the issue (for free) and we're good. But Nintendo.....they've never had hardware issues before, so I don't know how they're going to handle it.
i was going to ask for one for xmas but now this is happening id rather ask for a console that doesnt break on its own due to shitty faulty issues. just like how i avoided the xbox 360 with the red ring of death.
people also keep defending this issue and say to just buy another switch or oh well this shit happens. excuse me but no i have many consoles i still have my launch ps2 and its never broke on me, if your system is breaking because you basically play it for a while and it heats up then its a shit console. i play my ps4 constantly and my pc and they can get pretty hot at times but ive never had an issue with them and i have owned them for over 3 years now.
I got a PS4 at launch and it only lasted 4 days. Like you said, there were some problems with some buttons at the beginning. They warrantied it immediately and about three days later I had another from fedex. I've used that one a lot ever since and it is still going strong. I think sometimes there are just lemons.
I'm already on my second Switch, transferring my data to another one was a pain in the balls now on new console my joy cons can be undocked with a fart. Nintendo wants me to send it in joycons and all but I don't want to take a chance losing my save data. The Nintendo Switch has a lot going wrong for it right now.September cant come soon enough.
Any device can warp under intense Heat my S9 is Warped but still works but you would have to think about the doc it's not the switch as much as it is the doc the doc is a big piece of plastic they need to re-engineer the doc to have cooling fans and padding so it doesn't scratch the screen on the switch This particular nothing wrong With the Doc But it does make the switch support 1080p That's probably why it's so hot After taking out of doc
nintendo shouldnt charge so much money for a console that is prone to cracking and even if it works after it cracks its still a problem this is nintendos 8th gen console and it should be built to last.
my switch is fine even in and put of dock use however when using my dock a micronfiber cloth in between the switch and the dock this actully stops the switch fron touching the dock which gets extremely while i play
As long Nintendo replaces the consoles its not a big deal. Such things happen especially with devices new in the market. Haters alwas find something to hate. Im a xbox guy and i also had to replace my x after a week. Still love my X.
What a bunch of fucking cry babies...
A few issues with *some* of the 14 million switches sold and every baby like you starts crying.
Your switch isn't broken, shut the fuck up, quit crying. Nintendo shouldn't do shit for you.
Yet many Nintendo defender are babies like you who never grow up by sucking and fucking your own mom , because your mom is whore and your families are degenerate. You are fag and gay and LGBT , most of Nintendo fanboy are having mental problem playing Mario for million times because they childhood are molested by their own mother and father , and so do you.
ive been saying this for a while now but no one seems to have picked up on it :
When you play the switch DOCKED and it gets HOT (like they do) and then you expertly carefully professionally remove it from the dock to avoid breaking it, enable sleep mode, put it in a case and then shove it in a backpack, THE FANS TURN OFF IN SLEEP. You HAVE TO HAVE TO HAVE TO HAVE TO HAVE TO let it sit and cool while on and docked for ~5-10 min. before you pack her up otherwise the heat has no where to go but sit there and cause damage. for a while there, i thought this was the reason why switches were "bowing". due to being hot and then laid horizontally-ish in a case with no cooling and nothing holding it up but the joycon.
Side note : why doesnt the switch allow multiple processes to utilize wifi at the same time?
I have owned a Nintendo Switch since January 28th, 2018. Still no warping, bending or cracking. I almost immediately knew these consoles overheat. I make sure to take a 15-minute break for every 2 hours of gameplay. I’d recommend you do the same to extend the lifetime of your console. I also intend to buy another one when they release the newer, less hackable, less heating version of the switch and for those who haven’t purchased a switch yet, should wait for that.
I've took very good care of mine but when I play for like 5 or 10 minutes the cooling vent goes to get really hot and it get like 81 to 100 something degrees where I live.when mine gets hot I put it in my case the hot air is in not hot air to bend it or warp it but then when I open it all the hot air comes out and it's perfectly fine.
I disagree with your hunch, the Switch's dock has two vent holes lined up with the system. I noticed this day 1 and thought it was smart. Seeing as with the surface pro 3 i had , yes totally different device. But the dock actually insulated the heat and the unit had way more issues dissipating heat. No surprise Surface pro 4 and up models dock, were just seperate boxes hooked up with a cable :)
I got a switch since day 1, I use it 60% handheld, 40% docked. I have 2,5 hrs of commute to/from work daily so it's in my bag/backpack every single day. In a tough case (hori) with a screenprotector since day 1. It's still in perfect condition.
But especially in the 1st few months of owning it (and my BOTW addiction) on the weekends i'd pull 20hrs easily.
I think if it was the dock my unit would've bent/warped by now. I have several friends who play docked only, and in docked mode the unit pumps out higher clock frequencies for it's GPU/CPU. If it is an issue, I'm guessing maybe some units have issues where the fan can't rev up to what it's maximum is supposed to be. As it doesnt seem like a widespread design flaw. But this is super speculation.
Fuxking fanboys BLACK SCREENS, GLITCHES, BENT CONSOLES, VENTS MELTING, CHIPPING & BREAKING, PLASTIC ASS BABY SCREEN is there no end to the remodeled wiiu [SWITCH] being a failure...nintendo needs to stay away from HD consoles they all suck lmao
When I don't use my switch I put it in my dock and it's fine and I barely play docked and when it's undocked and I'm not really using it and busy I'll put it in sleep mode or off (Power Button not sleep from quick menu) and I barely use docked mode but usually put it in the dock for either charge or when waiting for time to play again and the only thing that's a little off on my switch is near the headphones area but that was my fault (behind the port it's a little scratched but it fell by my fault but my switch works just fine and headphones) and of wondering when I got it I got it on Christmas (when I first used it)
Joy-Cons fine just very very little scratch on top of both but my Joy-Cons had been dropped by accident by my friend who was playing Splatoon 2 but the Joy-Cons are working great just have to calibrate when they seem weird but I just want to make sure that it's calibrated if in Splatoon 2 I walk down and I haven't touched the L stick so I calibrate them and then normal (calibrate them monthly tbh)
It’s hot this summer. Store your switch in a cool, dark place, away from dust and sunlight, don’t play it to death, treat it like the expensive piece of hardware that it is, and that’s my best advice :/ maybe I should check mine for maintenance and whatnot. Better make sure mine is okay.
I guess that this is just a thing that I'll believe only once I see it happening for myself. I've owned mine since January and I've played it docked for the most time. Haven't noticed any cracks and the console isn't bent.
You say the cracks are appearing because people are playing the console docked and hand-held. Is this not what it supposed to be used for? Then saying that it's not a problem well guess what it is.... if the switch warps and cracks just by being used then is that not a serious design flaw?
I personally don't have any problems with my Switch. I have it since day one and i only play it docked. Of course, it's sad to see this happen and Nintendo really needs to do something about this. Also, they need to enable cloud saves as soon as possible so people can save all their hard work and long hours of play (games like Zelda) to be save! I hope Nintendo can figure this out!
Rex Apis I personally had 4 Xbox 360s...they replaced 3 of them via the severely long process of returning them through the mail. One of the Xboxs they sent me after waiting a month had the power button completely pressed in. I had to return it and start the entire process of waiting all over again. ..forgive me for not thinking that this was good customer service.
Mine isn't noticeably warped, however the screen juts out ever so slightly on one side, like less than 0.5 mm. I gently push it back in but after a couple hours it starts to work it's way out again so perhaps it is warping ever so slightly which is pushing the screen out of the body a little.
Honestly this is why wait a year or two I have the money but I wait with new council's I didn't think I might need to do that with Nintendo but I feel Justified now especially that high price tag and all those flaws I've been hearing when it first came out I was like I will wait like I did with the PS4 and like I did with the 3 DS because I'm not being exactly happy that the launch console is pretty much a prototype and they don't release the real one until like they milked it for all it's worth when referring to is all the versions of PS3 all the versions of the 360 that didn't work until the last Incarnation which is why I completely went to Sony after that debacle oh my brother suffered from that he was a 360 fan but that cemented my decision to stick with Sony and the canal on how many variations it took before they finally fix the red ring problem with Microsoft seriously well I agree not all the council's do that I'm not going to be the luck of a draw I'm going to wait for the real switch to come out and by that I mean the last bite they release for vanilla PlayStation 4 before they went to PlayStation 4 Pro as seen how they're talking so much about PlayStation 5 all those you need games for the pro seem to not exist I mean at least a new Nintendo 3 DS let me play Xenoblade Chronicles and some of those eShop games that are only available on the Wii U the ones I actually wanted to get like Megaman X 1 2 3 EarthBound Super Metroid and all that plus ran the games a lot better than the vanilla 3 DS especially Monster Hunter stories Pro feels like it was a slight upgrade with a launch title price tags I said nah I want them to release the real switch because I really want to play Xenoblade Chronicles 2 or better yet fire emblem three houses when that comes out how long will octopath Traveler
the warping and cracking issues may not be due to heat. all devices are built within tolerances, something as simple as misstorqued screws, incorrect fitting of parts or a simple flaw in the moulding could also account for these issues. have you contacted nintendo? although a failure rate in devices of 0.4 to 4.0 is fairly normal in all devices warpin is a manufacturing defect and nintendo may have a policy. i don't know about the rules in the us but here in europe items supplied with a manufacturing defect should be supported regardless of waranty conditions, within reason, if you leave it too long they may not be able to tell wether it's manufacturing prob or user missuse. contact nintendo find out where you stand and let people know how you are treated.
Only issue i have with my switch is a scratch it isn’t warped or cracked luckily.. then again i do notice that it seems to get hotter in docked mode.. and well the scratch came from my dad’s car... i was playing in there and decided to stop after a while but cuz i don’t have a case i just put it on my lap.. however the seatbelt has these little plastic nobs to keep it together.. and it scratched on that little nob.. like wtf nintendo.. (though my switch isn’t that old yet.. i’ve had it since march and i mostly play in handheld but sometimes decide to play docked.. i like handheld more because i love playing while laying down or while watching a movie at the same time.. and i mostly watch stuff on my tablet.. playing on a bigger screen just kind of isn’t my style.. though if something is going to break it down because of some error from nintendo they better repair it for free.. i don’t have enough money to buy new parts for my pc so i won’t be able to replace my switch... though luckily when it comes to nintendo stuff i do have some luck.. (also inspecting my switch only other issue i can find are my nasty ass fingerprints all over it.. and because i have sweaty hands it is like dirty af on the back 😂 )
Got my switch Day one midnight Release and have no problems with my switch at all , I put tons of hours docked and handheld mode , maybe it’s because I got that case you can put on your switch that can also be docked, but maybe mines should have messed up already since it got a case on it lol
