I would definitely not say Fromsoft's games, nor Nioh are jRPGs, nor is Gravity Rush... Gravity Rush is more of an action adventure/platformer game... Hell, I'd say Horizon Zero Dawn is closer to a jRPG than Gravity Rush, and Horizon *definitely* is not. Souls and Bloodborne are 3rd person action RPGs. The fact the developer is Japanese doesn't matter, it's how the game plays that matters/determines it. Games like Final Fantasy, Grandia 2, Skies of Arcadia, Suikoden, Xenosaga, Tales of whatever series, Vagrant Story, Chrono Cross/Trigger, Golden Sun, etc etc... Those are jRPGs. Souls/Bloodborne have literally nothing in common with them outside of a leveling system, items, etc which most definitely do not define something being a jRPG.
Maybe some people try to argue that Souls/Bloodborne are an evolution/extension of the jRPG genre, but as far as I'm concerned, they're aRPGs with a high level of difficulty... They're practically their own genre with other developers trying their hand at this style of game like Lords of the Fallen, The Surge , and Nioh with similar level designs with shortcuts to save points, resource system which you lose upon dying and can get back if you manage not to die and fight your way back, high learning/difficulty curve, etc. They most definitely are not jRPGs in any traditional sense.
Persona 5 is definitely best. Personally, id put ffxv in the top 5 as well. Frankly the world is beautiful and creative and the combat is exciting, though sometimes a bit clunky. The story needed work but the episode dlc's were quite great at filling the plot holes. Square also added massive improvenents via free updates. Its so much better now
Kwstas Askotis Yes man, play Persona 5 and u will be Surprised, will love it.
Do u know how a game have to be good for be Zelda rival????(wasnt exactly a Rival but in Goty prize was the only game who had a chance with Zelda).Dark Souls and fallout are excellent games but Persona 5 is Better, trust me i already played both Ds and Fallout and i Affirm that P5 is better. But for u discover it u have to play it. So stop losing time and go Play Persona 5,u will have hours of fun with some better stories in ever will see in a game.I Affirm it
Persona 5 isn't only the best J-RPG in years, it also one of the best RPG EVER, this game did so much for the RPG industry, I couldn't be more happy..
Well deserved RPG of the year award, I think that it was the only good one with Nier for the best soundtrack, the rest of the ceremony was a pure joke.
Anyone curious about dragon quest its beautiful game thats like having harvest moon on playstation again :D .... I was kinda hoping to find games that interested me on this list, not all the obvious overhyped mainstream games(except p5 and disg) =.=
Jrpgs are the best games you can get for any these consoles. A lot of the modern realistic games get dull and boring including some the realistic warrior ones they snuck into this video just because is Japan. I avoid those realistic games all together. Bunch of cheap realistic iPhone mmo looks to them.
Bloodborne and all that other stupid crap are not jrpgs. They are two button games where the "strategy" is when to press the dodge button and when to press the attack button. Theyre action games with some rpg elements. If they are jrpgs then so is god of war because you use orbs to raise ur stats and improve abilities.
I totally agree with #1 Persona 5. Haven't played such a great JRPG game since PS2 age.
Been spending more than 100hrs in Persona 5 and still loving it.
Nioh in my opinion is pretty good too. Reminds me of Onimusha.
i cant wait to play persona5 amazing games 4 and 3, and cant wait to see if dragon quest can pool agood game again the last game i played was was dragonquest 8 and it was breathtaking, also i ihope nino kuni comes for pc the 1st and the second one is already confirmed to come for pc so awesome cant wait for the new jrpgs to kick ass. i said it before and ill sait again jrpg is the true rpg
