Some 2D sidescrollers demand more control. When a thumbstick just doesn't cut it, the Joy-Con's directional pad doesn't provide a good solution either. Lucky for us there are plenty of retro-styled controllers and modifications that let you play with a D-Pad styled after classic consoles.

I have a collection of retro and weird controllers here and both 8bitdo's SN30 and SF30 are part of them. I had NO idea that they had rumble and motion controls. Most of all, because there's an 8bitdo Switch dongle available, I also had no idea that they could work with the Switch without a dongle. So I dug it up from the closet, held Start and Y, hit the sync button and voila, it paired up and worked right away. I was expecting it not to work at all. Playing Odyssey with it, feels great, thumbsticks are very nice. Can't wait to actually perform a Hadouken anytime I want next time my friend comes over with Street Fighter. We had to suffer through the joy-con buttons and the pathetic short-pivoted pro controller d-pad last time he came. What a gem I had hidden in the closet. The Nintendo Switch d-pad situation is atrocious and as a buyer of consoles going back to the 80s with the NES, I expected better. I don't care what age we're in and if most games don't use it, have a good d-pad, period. It's not that hard and it has been done before, several times. Especially when you freaking invented and patented the damned thing. If you prefer the new layout, great, but many people don't and I think Nintendo would profit by offering the option.
I love 8bitdo thanks to first seeing it on spawn wave media. I got the SN30 to play mega man legacy collections and other indies. After playing the beta for dragon ball fighterz I decided to pick up the SF30 pro. I think it’ll be the perfect controller for that game because of the dpad and added buttons. Awesome video man I’m a new subscriber, keep up the great work.
You talked me into the SN30 pro and i'm happy :D So thanks!
Mandatory complaining ahead:
Shouldn't you say 8bitDo just like you say the end of NintenDo? (like dough) Their logo is often inside that capsule/pill shape like the nintendo logo so you'd expect them to be pronounced similarly. I think?
EDIT: Just notice you just say it both ways whenever you feel like it. you do you :P
That leak said that there was gonna be a Mario Party 11 game developed by ND Cube and then in the E3 2018 Nintendo Direct Super Mario Party was revealed which was developed by Nintendo and ND Cube. This video was uploaded back in February... Hmm...
SN30 PRO is KING! i use that over the pro controller, also the thumb sticks are great and very accessible, i use portable mode often, so thinking what to do if that bass top shell isn't on point .. p.s.you cranked the mic compression to double max, try autotune on your next video ha
Love the video, but you got a contradicting intro. "They gave me these controllers for free, but the video isn't sponsored". Legally you received compensation, and according to the rules, this is a sponsored video. Not saying that influenced your review, but you have a pretty big channel, you should get more informed on the rules.
For everyone who says the 8bitdo Dpad is bad, it's the same exact Dpad as what is in the SNES... you just need to tweak it. Take apart the controller, add hole reinforcers over the buttons on the pcb. Add blue poster tack under the pits in the dpad. No more accidental diagonals.
Too much crying over a controller, i could had sworn that you either lose the love of your life or it was a mercy reunion, over a SNES type controller??? Oh well, i better not sound bitter if i don't want to be chopped off by the "me too movement"
I bought the SF30 PRO for $50 on Amazon and regret nothing! It is an awesome controller, that I use for my Switch and also for retro games on my PC. I use it more than my Switch Pro controller! Great video for people looking for an alternative to the Pro controller!!
I don't see anyone mentioning this so I will. Both the Nintendo Switch Pro Controller and the PowerA Wired Switch Controller have flawed design where the D-Pad will actually press two buttons at once even if you aren't. The problem with your controller isn't likely the angle of the D-Pad, your erroneous button presses is from a gimped design. Check out the fix here as it's pretty stupid that you have to do this for a $70 controller. https://imgur.com/a/vFdck
Thanks for the fantastic review video! I was debating SN30Pro vs. Pro Controller and after watching this video, went with the SN30Pro! Fantastic D-Pad and feel! Love how portable it is too! Keep up the excellent and informative work!
I have that nesprodo30 super lightweight high build quality but the shoulders buttons can break (90deg solber breaks loose) I had to buy a 2nd unit alot of youtube videos how to fix at least I hope they need to add a simple sideways aluminium L bracket behind the shoulders the new super nintendo model is too big to take everywhere
Hi guys, does anyone know if the N30 pro works on a nintendo switch with firmware 5.0.1 I just looked on the website of the producer and they say its compatible with firmware 4.1.0 but I think the website might just be outdated. Any help? + there’s a sf30 for 40$ bob
I wouldn't get the NES30 for my Switch, but it will make a nice player 1 for my NES classic edition. For all my other gaming needs I'll be using the SN30 Pro. And I'm already modding some joycons with the basstop shell because went I'm out in handheld mode I often want to play Sonic Mania or Shovelknight, where sticks just won't do.
The sn30pro and sf30pro work with the switch even though on the website it says it only works up to firmware 4.0.1 but I have a firmware 5.0.1 and it worked but I just had to hold it longer. Don’t get put off by the website info on the switch they are amazing!
I bought a Mayflash Magic-NS adapter and use my Wii U Pro Controller because it has a better d-pad than the Switch Pro Controller.
Actually... Streer Fighter is unplayable with the Switch Pro Controller.
