Some 2D sidescrollers demand more control. When a thumbstick just doesn't cut it, the Joy-Con's directional pad doesn't provide a good solution either. Lucky for us there are plenty of retro-styled controllers and modifications that let you play with a D-Pad styled after classic consoles.

Thanks for the fantastic review video! I was debating SN30Pro vs. Pro Controller and after watching this video, went with the SN30Pro! Fantastic D-Pad and feel! Love how portable it is too! Keep up the excellent and informative work!
I have that nesprodo30 super lightweight high build quality but the shoulders buttons can break (90deg solber breaks loose) I had to buy a 2nd unit alot of youtube videos how to fix at least I hope they need to add a simple sideways aluminium L bracket behind the shoulders the new super nintendo model is too big to take everywhere
Hi guys, does anyone know if the N30 pro works on a nintendo switch with firmware 5.0.1 I just looked on the website of the producer and they say its compatible with firmware 4.1.0 but I think the website might just be outdated. Any help? + there’s a sf30 for 40$ bob
I wouldn't get the NES30 for my Switch, but it will make a nice player 1 for my NES classic edition. For all my other gaming needs I'll be using the SN30 Pro. And I'm already modding some joycons with the basstop shell because went I'm out in handheld mode I often want to play Sonic Mania or Shovelknight, where sticks just won't do.
The sn30pro and sf30pro work with the switch even though on the website it says it only works up to firmware 4.0.1 but I have a firmware 5.0.1 and it worked but I just had to hold it longer. Don’t get put off by the website info on the switch they are amazing!
I bought a Mayflash Magic-NS adapter and use my Wii U Pro Controller because it has a better d-pad than the Switch Pro Controller.
Actually... Streer Fighter is unplayable with the Switch Pro Controller.
Captain, here. Just a tidbit of info, there actually happens to be an FC30PRO model with the Famicom theme in case you haven't already found one, although I'm not sure if they're still on the market anymore.
Too bad they changed the sn30 layout, the start end select buttons are now horizontal.
Its only cosmetical but now it does not look exactly like a snes controller...
I have 1 sn30 and finished Celest B side with it... tottaly worth it!! Now waiting for mario maker 2 and street fighter anniversary edition
I have the n-30 pro and I had problems connecting it to my switch. I've had the controller since December and it has never been connected to the console. I tried connecting it through the controller pairing screen, as well as a direct connection with the included cord. Could somebody help me please?
Does anyone else have a terrible time getting the NES30pro to connect to the switch? Even with turning it on correctly and everything. I had it connected once, but then I tried to reconnect it cause I thought you had to go through the whole process every time you play, so now it just won't connect.
Can you test multiple 8bitdo Pro controllers and Joy Con controllers at the same time? I've heard rumblings of there being issues like lag when the 3rd party and OEM controllers are used at the same time.
I have the SN30 Pro, and i love it! I actually find myself using it more than my Xbone controller on PC. Maybe it's just the novelty, and it may ware off, but it remains to be seen. Using on my phone is miles ahead of my old Moga Hero controller, and because the SN30 Pro is pretty portable, I'll be using the Joycons less on the road, now. And, it actually switches between paired devices pretty seamlessly. When off, Start + X for PC, Start + Y for Switch, and Start + B for Android. They took liberties only when necessary, to modernize it for newer games, and it still retains an awesome retro look. It really is a jack-of-all-trades gamepad, at a great price.
I'm gonna be honest, when I first got the switch I was dissapointed with the joycon directional buttons as well, but I then played Celeste with the joycons, and now I honestly prefer them to an actual d-pad. The fact that they're small is actually a benifit because it makes diagnals easier. Anyone else?
Not many truly understand the importance in a proper D-Pad in a lot of platformers or old school games. Heck, even Nintendo did away with their own patented D-Pad with those directional buttons on their newest console. Really a huge shame since the NES is what got me to gaming in the first place.
I loved the detail you described for each D-Pad throughout the video. Pretty much nailed my thoughts on how most of them feel like. You've earned yourself a subscriber dood. :)
me? repulsed by our glorious American Nintendo console heritage? absolutely not. the only thing i have against the SNES is the color of the face buttons. two shades of purple isn't as eye-catching as red, blue green, and yellow of the Super Famicom. so don't call me a SNES-hater, in fact, i'd be totally fine to use an SNES controller if i came over to your house or whatever, and we started playing video games on a Nintendo Switch with wireless SNES controllers, but i ended up forgetting my Super Famicom controller and left it back at my house
The N30 is great for Mighty Gunvolt Burst. I played most of that game with mine. The syncing is a PITA, though. When the battery dies, you have to re-sync it, and the instructions it came with are wrong...
My SN30 Pro controller is bricked because of crappy firmware updates. So just keep that in mind. and if you don't think its widespread just look it up. The SN30 pro had a very bad launch, it was basically you got a good one or a bad one.
I got the nes 8bitdo controller to use on my phone and pc, and it broke for no reason. They wouldn’t let me get a refund either, but it wasn’t the fault of the creators because I think I got it off of a third party website
I purchased then sn30 pro and the work great at first put it on the charger never came back one, got a replacement same thing and I’m using the charging cable and a block that has the same output as the controller input, have u experience that?
Awesome video bro. I ended up getting the NES30PRO more so for USF2 cuz the D-pads on the modern Controllers are just whack. I still think the best D-pad of all time belongs too the SNES absolutely awesome.
heres the only thing i dont like about the SF30 pro, the analog sticks sometimes get in the way of the dpad or buttons, if you have fat thumbs like mine, other than that i love everything about it, best modern-classic controller option out there
I think it's insane how they want to replace the 3DS-line too, at least in the long run, but offer no proper replacement for their nice Dpads on the Switch. I'd still argue the DSi XL has the best one, but my 3DS XL, GBA Sp and DS lite do a good job as well. At least way better than most 3rd party controllers for consoles.
The only thing stopping me from buying an SN30 Pro is the fact that it doesn't have handles like a Playstation controller. If it had handles, then that's fucking perfect for EVERY game. Not just 2D games. The PS4 controller is one of my all time favorite controllers. The SN30 Pro looks like a PS4 controller with a better D-pad and multiplatform compatibility. There's no chance they've made a grip attachment for it is there...?
I Just got my SF30 Pro (living in Europe I prefered the international version, 'cause it looks just like my Super Nintendo did) and I LOVE this gamepad. I specifically got it to play Celest and it's just fantastic, the best D-Pad since the SNES.
