I unlocked Ultimate mode last night, I did it all in one run and deleted the file afterwards due to how much I hated myself while killing allies. Knowing about the charge attack will make the Ultimate mode run easier. I love this game, and I agree with your character order from least to most favorite.

I'm on the fence about this one. I know I will enjoy this game but I want to finish Sonic Mania first. Also Splatoon 2 and Mario Odyssey still needs my attention. Someone, tell me whatever it takes to convince me to purchase this game, I need that push over the edge.

+jRPGFanatic It is done. Bought and downloaded. Thanks (:

It's 10 dollars, super cheap compared to those $60 dollar games. It's challenging, has many different ways to play, has different modes, and gives you that classic castlevania gameplay. I'm not sure what else to say lol.

10:58 "…similar to how Mega Man charges his X-Buster." Mega Man =/= Mega Man X Mega Buster =/= X-Buster ok. Forgive me for pointing this out.

Yup, you're right. I just wrote Megaman in my script... damn me for improvising and not catching this mistake.

Foxzo (2 months ago)
Actually, alfred's staff attack has a very long hitbox duration. You can swing the staff, come to a full stop only to have like 3 1 shot enemies run into it and still die on the spot. It's a very small detail that makes me prefer it over other characters like zangetsu in a few situations.
Foxzo (2 months ago)
Because Alfred is safer. Say you had a 3/10 chance of falling in an instadeath pit with zangetsu by being knocked back by an enemy guarding the ledge, alfred's timing could bump it down to a 1/10. For new players, (which your video IS aimed towards, considering its the very basics of the game), they might not get a feel for using zangetsu in that specific situation, making them not feel as safe as, say you, so using alfred could be a safety net for them. Regardless, when I did start out I did prefer Alfred's staff over zangetsu, atleast on mobile, low-health targets. If that is not a reason to use alfred's staff over the other characters, then I don't know what is.
jRPGFanatic (2 months ago)
I just looked it over and I did say "It does 3 damage and there are no instances where it would be beneficial to use it." You're right, I'm incorrect in my statement by stating "there are no instances" without leaving any wiggle room. I should have said "under many situations" or have a more generalized statement. I was also too focused on comparing Alfred to the other cast members so I don't make the argument for having characters dead and I didn't give enough attention to his character alone. I'll have to not have tunnel vision and describe my points better going forward. To continue, even though I know need to change my statement about Alfred, I think we're also thinking of "safe" differently and I'll admit that my definition isn't exactly correct which is why I believe Alfred's staff attack is useless. If I know I can do something without getting hit, I consider it safe. I think about what's possible. I can be both safe and fast and don't believe they're mutually exclusive. I think your argument for safe is essentially the chance of someone making an error (such as mistiming actions causing you to get hit or worse die). If that's the case, that's fine but if a player can be fast and still safe getting past quick, low health enemies or guarded pits (without WP or Alfred's staff), why not do that instead?
Foxzo (2 months ago)
jRPGFanatic Lying by deciding to leave false information in your video, to quote off memory: There is no reason why you would ever want to use Alfred's staff over the other characters (and something to the effect of "Alfred's staff is worse in every situation") The reason why you would use Alfred over the other characters in those situations is because it is safer. For arrows it is riskier but saves weapon points, if you cannot jump over the archer. (But my point in this situation was to show how long the hitbox stays up for.) Let's see some situations where you would use Alfred over other characters. Fast, low health enemy coming towards you in predictable pattern, much bigger time frame to hit without being hit. Fast projectiles that can be destroyed. Instant death pit being guarded by enemy. Etc. Now, I understand Miriam is better in many cases. But what if Miriam is dead? Zangetsu also has a very short range and his attack only stays up for a split second. In this case, Alfred would be the safest pick. Now, you're allowed to prefer going fast over being safe, but you can't say that because of that opinion, Alfred has no use in certain situations (Which is what your video is saying.) Simply correcting this is easy, however if you don't want to even after being shown that alfred's staff has a real reason to be used over other characters, then that, is what I consider lying to your audience, and spreading false information.
jRPGFanatic (2 months ago)
How am I lying (stating objectively false information) to support my opinion? In every situation I come across, I've never thought Alfred's staff attack would be more useful than any other option available to me. So if there are better options to use, is there a reason to use Alfred's staff attack? No, right? For instance with your examples: 1) Triple arrows - Instead of using Alfred's staff attack, the better option would be to just jump over the arrows which is perfectly safe (if not safer), saves time, and sets you up for an attack depending on distance/character out. 2) Moon Projectiles - Why use Alfred to destroy the moon projectiles when you can easily do it in one attack with Zangetsu or Miriam who are more optimal for the fight anyway (again saving time from the switching animation and is perfectly safe)? Maybe Medusa heads (obviously not called that in CoTM) since tracking them could be a bit tricky? But Miriam has an even easier time dealing with them with her high jump and long ranged whip. Not trying to be a douche but I'm trying to see your point of view.
Foxzo (2 months ago)
Ok but your video still is stating objectively false information. You can have an opinion but you can't really... lie to support it.

Lukaerd (3 months ago)
Honestly Gebel is still too OP for me personally, he can kill most enemies easily or without much risk and he can wreck most bosses simply because of his attack pattern. Train Boi: stand in from of it and jump attack repeatedly. Turtle Boi: stay in front of it and attack repeatedly. Dragon bois: Stand in front of it for the entire fight and attack repeatedly. Storm boi: Jump and attack as it dashes through the air. Period Mary: Stand on the second umbrella and attack non-stop and it passes near her. Gremory first phase: Stand near her and attack non-stop. The only bosses that can't be cheesed by Gebel are the Rich boi, Book demon and Gremory last phase.

So a followup comment on Zangetsu's moveset. I feel like the real nail in the coffin that I noticed while playing a solo run of Zangetsu- The game just isn't designed to be played with Zangetsu alone. On Ultimate mode this is negated, but by himself none of his powers are good enough to justify killing the other partners. Zangetsu can't gain any powers except the Armor, and with the absence of other characters he can really start starving for health in later levels. One example of these issues working together is the Bathory fight. Zangetsu just isn't meant to get up close and personal, yet that's exactly what the fight demands without having Miriam's whip or Alfred's spells. You'll end up taking unnecessary damage, but because of the inability to acquire upgrades, you end up dying several times. The only saving grace is his ability to get around enemies with his double jump and run ability, which only demonstrates why Zangetsu sucks in combat with his skills. At least his down slash can hit enemies easily while jumping and can hit twice.
Exorion (3 months ago)
Late follow-up on the upgrades but: If we're talking about Ultimate Zangetsu than I have to say you can get the upgrades from Stage 3 (Health), 4 (Weapon-Max), 5 (Health), 6 (Gauntlet) and 7 (Armor). The game has some problems with hitboxes if you jump to something from underneath. If used correctly you can grab upgrade 3, 4 and 5. The gauntlet you can get by dropping from the left and using your double jump to close the gap (or by destroying the breakable part with a well-timed Cresent Moon Slash). And the armor is just sitting there. I can't say if the devs thought about obtaining the upgrades that way (since it is never required with any other character) but since the game allows quite a lot of freedom and experimentation (especially with character switching), some could argue that this was a deliberate choice. Just wanted to point that out.
jRPGFanatic (4 months ago)
Yeah, the official site has their names and a description of the bosses. I definitely think skipping enemies is one of his strong suits especially when speedrunning the game. But I could also kill enemies and not have any trouble except for medusa heads.
EliteDoesGaming (4 months ago)
Bloodless? Hm, I was unaware that was her offical name. Didn't know the gauntlet was obtainable, guess I need to "git gud." And I still feel like the satisfaction of skipping enemies could be a testament AGAINST the design of Zangetsu. But alas, I'm still glad to see your replying to these comments.
jRPGFanatic (4 months ago)
Zangetsu can also get the Gauntlet power up if he has Cresent Moon or Double Jump. I disagree with your point on the game not being "designed" to be played by solo Zangetsu, it's just more difficult but I feel like it's learnable. There are a lot of paths to take and only 1 path to take as Zangetsu no powers, so they were definitely thinking about this when creating the game. I think Zangetsu is a character that is more difficult to use but once you get more comfortable with his jump and attack distance, he gets better. But I agree, having all 3 allies is much better than having his 3 skills and playing as solo no powers Zangetsu is pretty dreadful. When you say Bathory, do you mean Bloodless? That floating lady with the umbrellas? She was the most annoying boss for me but not by much and I didn't die on her. If I got more practice in and figure out my spacing I'm confident I could beat her quickly with Zangetsu and not take damage. I skip enemies every chance I get and try to skip as much as possible which is why I'm in love with his run and double jump abilities.

How do you get all the Zangestu abilities AND the other three characters as shown in this video?? DO you play through once and kill them all and then play through again?? Any help here would be greatly appreciated...
jRPGFanatic That's what I was thinking, I searched multiple FAQS and found no mention of the subject

99% sure it will do nothing except affect your ending. The 1% doubt is from not actually trying it.

DLC predictions?
jRPGFanatic (4 months ago)
Highly doubt there are going to be any DLCs for Bloodstained Curse of the Moon. The game sold well so I wouldn't be surprised if they made another stand alone bloodstained game after the main game is finished. For the Bloodstained Ritual of the Night, I don't think they have anything planned and will depend on reception and how it's sales are (for people who didn't back the game). I could see them building on the side character's story but I don't think they're limited by anything story wise so they can really do whatever they want like a new adventure.
Libe Jenkins (4 months ago)
U.Zangetsu > Gebel > Miriam > O.Zangetsu > Alfred IMO, but with Alfred you can do really cool and creative things. Like, he deserves his own mode and didn´t get it. Imagine playing a U.Alfred with just a bit more of agility or a better attack and more spells, enemy variety and puzzles. That would be great. Also I think Miriam daggers are great. Fullscreen damage is pretty good and safe.
Ninjaananas (7 days ago)
I think Miriam is overall the strongest fighter. Her melee attack is really good overall and her sub-weapons are the second best in my opinion as well as the second highest health and a good jump. Alfred has the most powerful sub-weapons and can do some useful things with them. For example using certain path with the ice or fire. Gebel is the best for exploration and has a good melee attack. Zangetsu is good in battle and even better with the special abilities. He sucks for using a special path without the special abilities and his sub-weapons aren't that good in comparison.
Elvick (4 months ago)
If only I could play Alfred with access to all his abilities. I'd play a solo Alfred mode then. I think it'd be super fun.

Tetrix0 (4 months ago)
This guy really think backward. He call the best character "worst character" and then the worst character "best character". This makes no sense at all.
jRPGFanatic (4 months ago)
You're giving Gebel and (ultimate) Zangetsu less credit than they deserve. Sure, Miriam can be kept out due to her versatility in all situations and Alfred has the best sub weapons but the other two are far from useless. Gebel has amazing anti-air attacks which is useful for any flying enemy and on stairs. Also taking into account the massive amounts of shortcuts he can take, does that not by definition makes him very useful? You don't like Zangetsu's reach but that doesn't change the fact that he can attack twice for every one of Miriam's attack. I'll gladly use the short reach and deal twice the amount of damage when fighting Glutton Train, the 2nd part of Valac, Bathin, or Gremory. In terms of pure damage, nothing can out damage Miriam's Axe. Zangetsu's charge blade comes close if it double hits though. Whether or not you consider Gebel and Zangetsu trash, it doesn't change the fact that they both have a lot of uses that can taken advantage of.
Tetrix0 (4 months ago)
Alfred's fire shield allow your team to avoid completely most damage, which lead to good shortcuts. His ice arrow allow you to one-shot the strongest monsters. His lightning allow you to just kill everything. Miriam has a lot of reach with the best sub weapons, which can deal with the most annoying of monsters. For every bosses, she is always the most fit to fight it, with her range and adaptability. Gebel is almost as useless as Zengetsu, but he allow you to get shortcuts and powerups others cant get. Zengetsu's weapon and sub-weapons have no reach at all, so he gets a harder time killing stuff. Even with his purple aura, he just gets out-dps-ed by Miriam's axe which even has a better range.
AkaiAzul (4 months ago)
Tetrix0 How so? I’ll admit I never knew about the charge blade, so I can’t say how fully useful U.Zangetsu is, but I found him to be extremely useful and rewarding to play as without the charge blade. I can only imagine this knowledge to further increase my enjoyment of playing as him.
Tetrix0 (4 months ago)
Even with all his upgrades, all the other characters are better.
jRPGFanatic (4 months ago)
Alfred the best character... lol. In all seriousness, I never said he was the worst character. Zangetsu is the best character in Ultimate mode.
N T (4 months ago)
You can also freeze the throwing sickles that Miriam uses, and use them as platforms. Furthermore, while they're in the process of unfreezing and flickering in the same position an enemy is in, they will deal a rapid and massive amount of damage (approx. 40~70 damage per frozen sickle and much higher if you can freeze two in the same boss hitzone, we're talking dual Crissaegrim levels of damage here if all hits from both sickles connect on a still target) while they stay stationary for a bit before they release from the ice. I found this out while messing around on boss rush yesterday against Valac. You can probably keep them in place too if you re-freeze them just before they release for further DPS. I recommend testing it on Valac (stage 4 boss) since it's a very stationary and large boss. It's much harder to pull off against other bosses like Bloodless or Andrealphus but still somewhat possible if you freeze them a couple times while avoiding re-freezing and resetting the freeze timer on the frozen sickle since the bosses get released from it much faster than the sickles. TL;DR: Freeze sickles on bosses/enemies for massive damage or to use as platforms.
N T (4 months ago)
It was completely coincidental, I thought to myself that it probably wouldn't work but I tested it anyway. And much to my disbelief, it sure worked. Compliments to Inti (and Iga) for that addition. In all likelihood you could cross big gaps (Designed for Gebel, such as the one in stage 5) by strategically freezing one sickle after another if you had enough weapon points to do so. To expand upon the idea above you could probably even freeze one next to a bat-only entrance and slide through it with Miriam if the elevation was pinpoint accurate.
AkaiAzul (4 months ago)
Damn, I feel like I underutilize the change character system. I didn’t know frozen enemies take double damage, so after seeing this video, I thought freeze/axe was the best combo you could do, and now I read this. The very idea of freezing your own projectiles wouldn’t come to me in a million years.

Magician2086 (4 months ago)
It's funny to see that most people are saying that overall the best characters are Alfred and Gebel. To me Alfred was the worst, I used him only for his shield and nothing else. Also I'm not a big fan of Zangetsu. His jumps are terrible and his range is lackluster(same goes for Alfred). Yes he has a lot of health and can attack very quickly but most of the time I ended up being hit because of his bad range. Gebel is good yes, mostly cheesy on the stairs and to any ennemy that comes from above. But overall, I find him good. Clearly the best character for me was Miriam. Good jumps, good range(also love most of her subweapons). It was also her that gave me the best "Castlevania" feeling, probably because of her gameplay being very similar to a Belmont. So that's why I felt very "in control" with her.
Magician2086 (4 months ago)
Well, I didn't even know you could kill the guys instead of taking them with you.
AkaiAzul (4 months ago)
Magician2086 Have you tried a solo Zangetsu run? It gives you an insane appreciation for him especially in Veteran mode, once you figure out his quirks. This is assuming playing to unlock Ultimate mode. I don’t recommend playing base Zangetsu. XD

I actually don't mind Alfred's staff because he actually keeps it out a second longer than other characters, meaning it can be good for nailing smaller and pesky enemies. Gebel is one of the most broken characters to me, but only if you know how to use him. His Siphon Blood attack can be used to break lanterns meaning he can go quite a ways without having to stop and refill weapon points. Not to mention his main attack is very cheese when used on stairs. Miriam definitely is a jack of all trades, but also a master of none. Most of her subweapons I never used, her range and the piercing ability of her whip are good, though. She has decent platforming abilities, but when in doubt use Gebel instead. I also think Zangetsu is a bit better in terms of dealing damage quickly. And for Zangetsu? Despite what I said about Miriam, I'm not a fan of Zangetsu. His subweapons are great, but as with most characters, everything is pretty much obsoleted (with the exception of Magic Charm) after getting Alfred. His platforming abilities are among the worst, which is relative because everyone else besides Alfred has exceptional platforming abilities. The thing you have to understand about his abilities is that they probably won't be unlocked in a normal run. First timers will pretty much always get some or all of the characters, so it feels like "either make Zangetsu powerful and obsolete the partner system or get a bunch of characters who are kinda good but obsolete Zangetsu" The inclusion of Ultimate mode isn't really an excuse cause thats after the fact.
AkaiAzul (4 months ago)
I think it’s appropriate for base Zangetsu to be a glorified health sponge in a normal run and an absolute beast in Ultimate mode. Heck, I’ve never gone back to normal mode as a result. Give me harder bosses any day.
Libe Jenkins (4 months ago)
I absolutely think just like you except I think Zangetsu weapons are the worst kit of the four in the roster, they work more like erasing his limitations than to make him a lot more powerful. I never use a potion on Zangetsu if there are more partners alive, maybe using the holy water and the demon essence because those are fun to just obliterate bigger enemies while being in movement. The bigger health pool is a big plus and he is faster than Miriam, but overall I think they are at the same level, Zangetsu being a bit lower on the list and being the main difference between the two if you want to rushdown and risk some damage (Zan) or be slower and hit from longer range, and using the better secondary weapons (Miriam). Oh and that Zangetsu jumps. Those are terrible. IDK why, those always killed me lol
zhaoyun255 (4 months ago)
Let me say that Normal will be soon forgotten unless you are a masochist who wanted a non upgrade challenge. You can get the solo endings or trophies with Ultimate Mode easily. Also, Normal mode enemies are not as hard hitting or resilience as Ultimate/Nightmare Mode and trophy hunter will do the sacrifice all route anyway for unlockables and it's less a hassle to do it in Ultimate compare to Normal for other endings. Zangetsu's charge blade had the BEST MELEE range. That range was actually farther than it looks like. I could one shot the spear guard and shield guard easily. The Charge blade made the sub weapon obsolete except for the Axe+Ice, Demon Essence, Fire and bat. It made the run less of a hassle with frustration against the pixie, Not Medusa Head or bats.
jRPGFanatic (4 months ago)
Keeping the staff out a second longer is why I consider Alfred's attack the worst. I can see it being useful for frogs but I'd rather use Burning Sphere for weak annoying enemies so I can keep moving. I hate standing in the same spot for too long. I actually prefer having Miriam out over Gebel since her increased jump height is just too good. Makes it easier to dodge projectiles, jump over and ignore enemies, reach higher platforms, and land higher on the staircase. Her jump attack is the best out of the cast (except for Zangetsu's Cresent Moon which I think is on par). Although there are definitely situations where Gebel's air/ground attack will excel over Miriam's, it's not as common. Zangetsu is the best in terms of pure DPS. Miriam and Gebel takes the same amount of time to go through their attack animation while standing but Zangetsu can attack twice in that time frame. Since these 3 all do the same damage, Zangetsu is the best when hitting stationary beefy targets. I've been playing a lot of Ultimate mode, so I think Zangetsu is an absolute beast. But on normal runs, you bring up a very good point, although I will never think Demon Essence is obsolete lol. Zangetsu isn't as useful without his "secret" abilities but I like the way the game kind of forces a choice between having a good Zangetsu or having all the characters but a worst Zangetsu. It gives two different experiences when playing through on normal mode. Thanks for taking the time out to write your response. Definitely great to get another person's perspective.

Justin Khoong (4 months ago)
Doesn't Soul Vision also act as a damage soaker aside from extending his minuscule attack range? It may not be a shield like Burning Sphere, but it definitely acts like a wall against projectiles!
jRPGFanatic (4 months ago)
Soul Vision doesn't remain if you switch characters, although it would be decent if it did... But yeah, most of this game is just knowing the patterns of enemy AIs since it's very simple. If you're stuck with only Alfred, I can see it being more useful.
Justin Khoong (4 months ago)
I'm not sure whether the soul vision stays when the character changes, but I'm constantly prone to overextending and killing my team members with Alfred mostly being the last one standing. Plus there are enemies that would just spam projectiles that I can't fully catch or reach with Miriam's whip or Gebel's bats. But then again, a majority of the projectiles can be nullified by any attack, so I've learned to time and deal with them for every character.
jRPGFanatic (4 months ago)
I guess? Why not just use Miriam's whip? Even though it's shorter, it's sufficient for hitting projectiles. It might be better if the cloned body actually blocks projectiles but Burning Sphere is still better in that case.

jRPGFanatic I want to but I don't. I can't wait! I just hope the bloodless boss abf others don't lean too far in the erotica territory. Can't have this thing going Pachinko slots on us.

Dustin Woodard thanks! I'm looking forward to RoTN too. Trying to stay in the dark about the game as much as possible.
