I think cliche has negative connotations. Most people refer to these as more "staples" or "conventions" rather than Cliches. It's like if a game borrows from another game. If it's good it's an "homage" but if it's bad, it's a "ripoff".
I spent some time as a member of the SCP Foundation website, and they worded the Golden Rule of Cliche Usage so perfectly, I will never forget it, and I wish more people knew it: A cliche is not something that must never be done ever, it is a thing that has been done so many times that, if you do it yourself, you have to do really, really well. Beautiful, isn't it? :)
what you call cheatvision, i call wallhacks. more often than not, its some form of infrared. some others do less to explain it, or brush it away as being digital in the first place(assassins creed usually does this, as you are in what amounts to a VR memory)
How about the cliche level design where your character has to walk into a room you just know there's going to be a boss fight, you're well into the room when the enemies immediately spawn and the one door slams behind you.
I don't have the love for Exploding Barrels because I'm such a noob, I never think of shooting them. Or I miss them when I actually try. But I'd love to point they date back to DOOM and Donkey Kong Country!
