this beats out TGB's video by a mile
Arsch Dee (1 day ago)
Why not just call them (3D) Beat em ups? VashTSB (a huge DMC and Platinumgames fan) uses that term all the time and it's cool. If Fighting games can be 2D and 3D and still be called "Fighting Games" regardless so can Beat em ups right? You can't just associate the term with oldschool 90s brawlers like Final Fight or Streets of Rage and only just that. Is Star Fox 64 not a Shoot em up because it's 3D? Is FFX not an RPG because it's 3D? Is fucking Mario 64 not a Platformer because it's 3D (yeah sounds pretty stupid right?)? This discussion just weirds me the fuck out. Can't think about it without getting irritated as hell after 5 seconds...

I'm so happy someone made a video properly discussing and elaborating on what roughly defines a character action games. Thanks for the great video.
Mr.SilentProtagonist (13 days ago)
I was agreeing with you until that last part. GamingBrit wasn't dismissing the term "Character Action Game" because he wanted to exclude games. He took issue with games like nuGoW (I use the nu prefix on all same name reboots.) being arbitrarily measured by a different standard. When talking genres, I think that there should be two questions asked: "What makes a game part of the genre?" and "What makes a good game in that genre?". The first question is obvious. Take the term JRPG. It means Japanese Role-Playing Game or RPGs from Japan but there are people that insist that JRPGs are defined mechanically. These morons think that something is a JRPG if it is like 90's Final Fantasy; turn-based combat, random encounters, pre-made protagonist, etc. There are three problems with argument: 1) not all JRPGs have these traits; 2) none of these traits are exclusive to JRPGs; 3) the latest FF and DQ games don't even have turn-based combat. They are also the idiots that call Dark Souls a WRPG. Capcom called RE5 a Survival Horror despite needing to kill your way to the next level while your inventory is reduced to 3x3 grid. You also have the stupid argument of how "Mario is technically an RPG because you play a role.". Then you have second question, "What makes a good game in that genre?". There are many games that superficially have "RPG elements" and some of those games are good. However, you can't define a genre by a game that barely focuses on it. We basically would end up with a homogenized mess pandering to the least common denominator. This runs the risk of "This game isn't part of X genre because it sux!" mentality but that is what the first question is for. BTW: "Character Action Game" is a stupid genre name.
Mr.SilentProtagonist (13 days ago)
I paused the video to go somewhere else so I might have forgotten the context of that line. I do appreciate that you mentioned that it is important to talk about what makes a game from a certain genre good. However what is the criteria of a "character action game"? I guess that you can say its priorities and its focus. Is it really just the style gauge that separates it from something like Streets of Rage?
Foxcade (13 days ago)
That last comment wasnt directed directly at Gaming Brit, but at the fans of the genre that do that kind of thing.

The Yakuza games, the Tales games, and Gungrave games are all character action games. Meanwhile, the first 3 Onimusha games and No More Heroes games are not character action games.
Zero Attention Gaming (1 month ago)
I've always seen them as games where the character is defined as much by their combat as their personality. I'd say God of War does because Kratos combat style is a core aspect of his image. Raiden, Jetstream Sam, Dante, Vergil, Bayo etc. All have combat that is an integral part of how we view the character. All have something unique.

You forgot one name for character action games! Hack and slash

I like how I'm on the opposite end of the hack and slash people and have never heard people use the term hack n slash when referring to games like DMC near as much as in the comment section of this and the codex entry video.

I think under this kind of definition, fighting games like BlazBlue and Guilty Gear would kind of fit in it.
Djololo (18 days ago)
They're fighting games lol. Fighting games are fighting games, that's the genre in which they belong. From Mortal Kombat and Street Fighter to Tekken and lesser known "anime fighters" such as BlazBlue and Guilty Gear. Yes, it's an actual sub-genre of fighting games.
Kevin Roberts (2 months ago)
I wish they'd make a Megaman 'character action' game. It seems like they don't know what to do w/Megaman besides re-releasing the old games. Just make it like these games.
Abdessamad Azhar (2 months ago)
Action games are ACTION GAMES, period. Making stupid subgenres like that when not needed to cover games which aren't as good as others like the new GoW compared to Bayo or DMC is just fucking stupid, that new god of war isn't a really good action game just how the last of us isn't even a survival horror game, why try to cover up those facts? So that those decent games get their 10s justified while far better ones continue being niche?
GuyPercinn (2 months ago)
All arguing about semantics aside, thank you SO MUCH for introducing me to Assault Spy. I've Played Ninja Gaiden Black, 2 and 3, Metal Gear Rising, DMC 3 and 4, Bayonetta 1 and 2 all to death and have been DYING for a new character action game. This is my absolute favorite genre of video games and it's so niche, nobody other than the DMC guys and Platinum games really ever makes them. Sucks that Assault Spy is only in early access, but it's super fun and I can't wait for the full release. I'll definitely check out Nelo too.

Sub-genre sucks ass because they're sometimes too vague and almost feel like they were made up on the fly compared to genre. Let's be honest here, if you like game of certain genre most of the times you will like other games within the same genre.

I don't see anything wrong with that term. It's just like the "metroidvania". Those games were basically side scrollers with deep exploration. Some gamers doesn't even know what that means, especially the younger ones. I always call the NBA2K series as "shitty game" and nobody gives a flying f.

I just love that when you talk about fighting enemies in these games you say “styling on them”.
Gokou Blacc (3 months ago)
Ultimately, it's irrelevant to me if someone uses the term "character action" in a general sense. These games are beat-em-ups when you get right down to it, but we're all typically referring to the same type of game. The problem is when people try to treat DMC-inspired games as their own genre/subgenre, when they're really not; they're just beat-em-ups. DMC just brought the beat-em-up genre into a 3D space and revolutionized it by introducing a variety of new mechanics that became the groundwork for future titles in the genre. It's even more annoying when people try to use that genre card to dismiss criticisms of combat in games that alter in style and presentation from them, even when their combat systems have the same basic mechanics, which is what happened with TGB's God of War review. Like you said in the video, though, there's an equally present problem with people just referring to them as action games, when there are so many different types of action games in existence -- one of them being beat-em-ups. So no, games like DMC and Bayonetta are not JUST action games, either. This entire discussion is rather... frustrating, in all honesty.

Peasham (3 months ago)
All this video, and every other response to TGB's videos has shown me, is that people don't understand what colloquialisms are. And really, that's all "character action" is. Which is why I take umbrage with people trying to define it, and definitely with people trying to defend games with it, since it's really just one's "feeling" of what a character action game is. And that's fine, but it's not a definition. Also, the fact that good game mechanics seem to be exclusive to the genre's not elitist at all.
Scott Elout (1 month ago)
Oh, sorry, I thought you were saying that we should let a flaw with a game slide.
Peasham (1 month ago)
+Scott Elout What? No. I saw people defend games with spotty combat by saying they're not a character action game. It's what sparked this whole controversy. I'm not against the definition of character action specifically because people use it to excuse games, but it's sure as shit a reason.
Scott Elout (1 month ago)
So we should give games an excuse if they have poor gameplay in certain areas?

Very interesting video. Thanks for making it. You gained a new subscriber! :) Two (very) minor issues, though: -If we could perhaps not have trash-ass Ninja Gaiden 3 in the thumbnail of a video celebrating the genre, that'd be great. -You get -0.5 respectability point for using the ignominious frame cropped 16:9 and broken shmup control settings in REmake.

So wouldn't these be better labeled "mechanical action games"? They're games focusing on the intricacies and mechanics of the combat. Dmc3 is fun because of the versatile combos, animation cancels, jump cancels, and unique enemy interactions. I love furi and wouldn't really refer to it as a character action game but it's definitely a mechanical action game because it's literally about learning how your moveset interacts with the boss's and getting better at utilising your abilities. Is it just not flashy enough? Because that's really not why I play dmc. I mean sure Dante looks cool, but I really just enjoy having a lot of agency in combat. I like to be able to set the pace myself to an extent.
Aureate Seigneur (1 month ago)
+CreagDog2 Phantom the first boss has a lot of unique interactions. You can stand on him, you can reflect his fireball, you fight him in interesting locations and his final fight has a secret quick kill. Sin Scissors have a quick kill. Shadows have the cool stinger kill I mentioned. I recommend check-in out the games Bestiary if you don't want to play the game but are interested in more. DMC1 does have slower combat but it's more intense because the enemies are very aggressive, it's actual combat, not an arena for the player to "express themselves" it's a fight and the enemies want you dead. I like DMC3 a lot big DMC fan over all, but 3s enemies are too passive imo. I thought 4 did a better job of mixing an expressive player system with aggressive enemies. I have high hopes for DMCV.
CreagDog2 (1 month ago)
+Aureate Seigneur "I wouldn't call those unique at all" I mean how unique are we talking? Like way to bash my opinion. Of course dmc isn't the only game to do stuff like that, but how many games bring all that to one place and do it fairly well. I actually enjoy the centipede fight just because it reminds me of SotC. Do u think there's any unique interactions in dmc3? I don't really care to play dmc1 just because it's so slow but being able to jump onto enemy weapons as they attack u and use stinger sounds pretty dope. What unique interactions are there besides that in dmc1? Maybe I should consider slogging thru it just for those

Like dude u clearly KNOW what's in the game. Did u just feel the need to say that dmc1 is better? Cuz fine but that's your opinion man. I like the faster pace of dmc3 and stand by it having interesting enemy interactions. Like u said, it's pretty dope u can disable parts of Cerberus's moveset.

Really great video. The character action genre wasn't really one I was familiar with until a while ago, to me these games were just hack and slash or beat em ups but now I think I understand what makes it it's own genre of games, one that doesn't have to be restricted by what traditionally makes it a thing. I mean I'm still going to harp on what makes an rpg an rpg but I definitely agree that genres should aim to evolve and be more inclusive than. Also you god of war response video too lol, your genuine thoughts on the game would be interesting though.

I like the video and agree for the most part but I think you missed the point of that TGB response video. His argument is that he should be able to compare certain mechanics to other games even if they're not in the same sub-genre. Foxcade, if you read this please consider making a video about how reviews and critiques should be made and especially how consumers should use them. I get the feeling most people don't really understand what the point of a critique or even a review is. TGB cut down certain aspects of the new GoW and a lot of viewers took it as a personal insult. And maybe TGB didn't do the best job at making criticisms since he was clearly frustrated while recording. Either way I think he made some good points but people found all sorts of way to dismiss them; a lot of it was by using genres as a sort of gatekeeping tactic. People didn't acknowledge anything he said because GoW isn't "Character Action" therefore all his criticism was rendered invalid to them, which is what his "Just Action Games" video was responding to. It seemed like most people only wanted him to review it so that he would confirm their opinion that it's one of the best action games ever. The most disconcerting comments I read claimed he was being contrarian for clickbaiting. All of this is so counterproductive to everything a review or critique is supposed to do. I know it isn't really the kind of thing you do on this channel, and Codex Entry partially addressed it, but I think you could do the topic justice and educate a lot of people. Maybe they'll become better at critical thinking in general too. And maybe you could use the new GoW as an example for extra style points if you've played it. But I hope you can make a video because we really need it from as many respected reviewers, critics, and analysts as possible if we want our medium to push forward and not settle for good enough. I really like how Film Crit Hulk puts it in this article: https://birthmoviesdeath.com/2013/07/03/film-crit-hulk-man-of-steel (mostly only the parts before he gets into Man of Steel stuff, mostly mostly "intro #3" and "intro #4") and he also has an article about fan backlash like TGB got: https://birthmoviesdeath.com/2011/12/21/film-crit-hulk-smash-what-the-f-is-it-about-batman starting at the part about "ambushes". Just extra reading for anyone that reads this comment but they're from a movie structure analyst (or something, I don't know his actual job title) so some jargon warning.

Erk1234567 (3 months ago)
So for people who still think Character Action is a dumb term, imagine explaining something like Hollow Knight without using the term "Metroidvania". "Hollow Knight is a platformer." So it's like Mario? "No, there's an emphasis on exploration, you get upgrades that help you when you revisit an area." Cool, like Mega Man X! "No, but everything's connected." Like Metroid? "Yeah." Why didn't you just say 'Metroidvania'? Even if you don't like the name, using a label for a collection of games that all contain similar elements makes things so much easier. Specificity helps. As teen, I had to look up "hack and slash games more like Devil May Cry than Dynasty Warriors", when now I can just say "Character Action games" and people know what I'm talking about.
Erk1234567 (1 month ago)
+Aureate Seigneur okay, so the examples contrived, the point I'm trying to make is that fans of these types of games are going to know exactly what you mean
Aureate Seigneur (1 month ago)
Oh its a Metroidvania? So it has math based RPG mechanics? Oh it doesnt? Hmm...It has a laege inventory system! No? My skills are directly influnced by the death of my enemies ala the Soul system? No...doesn't have that either? Well wtf kind of Metroidvania is this?!?!?!?! Hollow Knight is a 2d Open World Platformer. Didn't need to use Metroidvania at all to explain what Hollow Knight is. I dunno man, read the dictionary and learn to articulate better maybe?
Erk1234567 (3 months ago)
Peasham I mean, the whole point is that a subgenre is more about a collection of shared elements than everything resembling the original work. Pink Floyd has more in common with King Crimson than The Beatles, so it's Prog Rock. Alternatively, Queen did not consider themselves prog, but their earlier albums had elements of Prog, which can aid in selling those albums to a King Crimson fan. Viewtiful Joe has an in-depth scoring system reminiscent and a shop to buy moves, so while it's ultimately a puzzle platformer/beat em up, you could describe it as having Character Action elements and you'd be telling the truth. A subgenre isn't this strict label that a game has to fall under because it's like this one game (though some can), it's used by communities to share games that are similar enough in nature to warrant a comparison. And if you could actually dismantle my argument, you should've done it instead of jerking yourself off in the last sentence.
Peasham (3 months ago)
So what you're saying is, every game should be categorized as every other game that's like it, but came before it. At what point does this categorization stop? When it's convenient? Also, if something's like Metroid, it doesn't make it a Metroidvania. If something's like the Castlevania games that tried to emulate Metroid, that's a Metroidvania. I could even dismantle and disagree with your main point easily, I love it.
Erk1234567 (3 months ago)
Furthermore "Action Games with really good combat" is completely subjective to TGB's tastes and preferences. I know just as many people who would apply that term to Soulslikes or Muso games, regardless of whether people here would agree with them. You NEED specificity when talking about a genre of games, and Fox has accurately laid out some criteria for what makes this subgenre a subgenre.

Video game genres are not film genres. Film genres are based on the tone of the story. Game genres are based on the you do in the game, this applies to all types of games not just video games.
Daniel Adamczyk (3 months ago)
Dear Foxcade Lets ask two questions before we talk about "character action games". What is a Genre and what function it have? Genre is type, category or other form of art. It make to difference one kind of artwork from another and is case of game to shortly describe about what game is so it have a porpuse of information. Example: Shooter(game where you shoot) FPS(game where you shoot from first person camera) Etc,etc..... So lets look now on "character action" games. First we have "character" part what describe exacly what? Most of the games have a main character or grup of characters, so indetification based on this trait is misleading for "no gamer perspective". The point of view when you try explaine a game for the person what don't know anything about games. Second "action" is criptic even for me. All games are related to making somesort of actions shooting, driving and fighting so this is over simplified and i never use therm "action game". That is bad to describe that kind of games but i agree whit you that those games need a genre name. "Character action" overall sound like a buzzword similar to "cinematic experince" or "reversed racism" so is time to stop using it and find something what fit more to those games. Ps: many polacks like me use therm "slashers" and thanks for adding me to video, that maked my day
