Sorry Zelda, but Mario is King again. Could Odyssey take game of the year over Breath of the Wild?

butt touch (づ￣ ³￣)づ (___)___)
Both games amazing. I played Mario 50 hours. Played Zelda 140 hours. Zelda to me re-ignited a love for games inside me I hadn’t felt in years. Over Horizon, over all my PS4 games, (in thr 200s), and over Mario, Breath of the Wild was a transcendent experience. Best game I’ve ever played
Y'know what? There are people who love both franchises and prefer Mario and there are people who prefer Zelda as an franchise and also prefer BOTW over Odyssey. I grew up with Mario and I had NEVER played a Zelda game in my life. So my opinion is clear right? I love Odyssey hundred times better than BOTW. Well it happens to be that BOTW was one of my best gaming experiences EVER and Odyssey was just a fun game.
I am not a very confident gamer because I was always the player two. My big brother was always better at every single game and realized every single trick while I grew no confidence at all asking always help at every situation and pausing the game every time I saw some enemy.
BOTW was built beautifully. The character progression happens in game too yes but the most important progression that happens is your skill. If that would have read on the game I would have never picked up Zelda and dreaded the game because I had zero confidence in games. When I tried it I died atleast seven times on great Plateau and I was getting vary and tactical of every enemy. I avoided Lizalfos and by the time I was at Kakariko Village I realized how massive and fun this experience will be. With better weapons I fought bigger enemies and got more confidence. I learned to sneak strike, do the fast attack thingy etc. And by the time I beat the game and started again in Master Mode I didn't die a single time in GP. I beat the shit out of the blue bokoblins because I had superior skills than before.
BOTW was designed to be easily approachable to normies like me but it tricked me to buy a game that would actually advance my skills and confidence as a player. There are little games nowadays that trust the players this much and have the skills to create a game where the most important progression happens in you not your equpment and level. The real level points and experience point are in your head. On top of that open world games and Zelda games were completely unknown to me so the experience is fantastic.
And also BOTW's soundtrack is propably my favourite soundtrack in every game ever. I cried a lot and got so many goosebumps on how the music was connected to the grand and dramatic experience and lore that didn't feel over the top. It served the game just right. Just for some context I get 95% of the time NO investment in main characters or love stories. I just love the unspoken grandio and gameplay the game has.
They nailed all of these things and I think BOTW is a masterpiece not only in gameplay but gamedesign. Sadly no other companies will take notes because designing a linear game with linear progression system sells more and designing a progression system like Zelda is incredibly time consuming and propably irritating and hard. That is why I thank the guys behind Zelda, THANK YOU for having ambition and innovating.
I'd say the alleged dissonance in the art style works more than it doesn't. What Olly omits to state when talking about 3D world's art direction is how uniform it is. To me, Odyssey evokes not a mish mash of contrasting art styles but rather a sickly sweet Saturday morning cartoon and this is, in my eyes, the first game that has actually managed to nail that look! Is it intentional? I'd say so because the majority costumes you can purchase seem to be ripped right out of NES/SNES era mario games and even the super mario cartoons! It feels like a new generation of developers have taken the helm and created the first truly significant mario game since Galaxy!
Sorry but to say “I’m not a casual” then say motion control isn’t used as basic movement in speed runs? You gotta be shakin to be a rollin fast but to beat the game you obviously don’t need to know how to move efficiently
Mario also is cheaper for 100% (I just bought all the Amiibo for Zelda and that was 3x the cost of just the game) I like Zelda more cause it’s my favorite but Mario is still amazing and I have a hard time to say which is better without being a little bias.
“But when you finally get that moon, it’s SOO rewarding”.
I must be playing a different game than everyone else. The controls were great, but the game was sooo easy, I felt like it was designed for children under the age of 10. Which is fine by the way, I just didn’t find any challenge, and getting moons certainly didn’t feel rewarding. There were a lot of moments that made me smile that I thought were clever, but if we’re comparing it to the quality of ‘Breath of the wild’, I feel like it’s not even close and ‘Zelda’ is the far superior game.
how can odysee succeed bptw, then odysse was not even good enough to be "good" (it ist ok and much better than galaxy but not enough to be called "good". People simply like odysee because they are too traumatzed by 3D World and galaxy)
I like botw, but for me, odyssey is far, far superior. The controls in odyssey are so much more technical and players are rewarded much more for being *good*. the movement is nowhere near as responsive in botw, especially jumping and the bow. so botw skips and more advanced moves are more rune hacks than technical jump combos.
I honestly only "really like" botw, while odyssey is my favorite 3D mario and maybe top 3 mario.
I think to compare these games is just ridiculously unfair. You CAN NOT say which one is better, they're just too different.
Breath Of The Wild is an open world game. It focuses on exploring the whole world and going for better gear. It's like playing an adventure. The players questions, which came up at the beginning are just a few of many reasons to explore the world. Yeah, it is not perfect. It also has got many teething troubles. But the main focus on exploring is just so good implemented that the small mistakes really don't bother the gaming experience.
Mario Odyssey is a linear, level-based game. While BOTW is more of an adventure, Mario Odyssey is a pure fun-to-play game. It uses old mechanics to re-fill the Mario experience.
For me, BOTW was much more fun although(!) I really am not an Open World fan.
Still, It is impossible to objectively say which game is better.
Zelda breath of the wild is more frustrating and satisfying, Super Mario Odyssey is just FUN, it gives you a child wonder that you forgot you had. Its what made me get into gaming, and maybe even you. I love botw, but Super Mario Odyssey is my favourite game of all time.
These games shouldn't be compared; They are two different genres of game.
It's like comparing Skyrim to Castlevania.
Both great games in their own right, but not comparable on "which is better".
The better game is going to be whichever genre you prefer.
My first video game console was the NES... and I grew up playing super mario and the legend of zelda... later on I became a fan of star fox, donkey kong, kirby and other nintendo's titles... I'm still waiting for those on the switch... by the way, I already have mario odyssey and zelda botw... both are incredible games!
BOTW was better by like .00000001% but the fact that we got them both puts the switch miles ahead of anything that nsane ps4 players can hope for and the xbox players need to stop being cupheads, see what i done there? LOL good video
It's easy to see how BotW is bigger than Odyssey... When there is a BotW video, it's a video about Zelda. When it is the Odyssey video, it is a comparison with Zelda... God... Just having to repeat 10x that "Odyssey is better than Zelda" already proves which is actually better.
I’m in a bit of a predicament, and I know since this is a place for Nintendo fans. I just need you to keep an open mind and help me.Okay so. I have an xbox one(about a year old), and I have procured enough cash for a new console. Now I can’t decide if I should upgrade to the Xbox one S or X or if I should buy the switch to play mario and zelda. Any opinion on what I should get is welcomed. Thanks
